I have to agree with some above post on having a steel j frame as opposed to the lighter models. I had a 642 and a 360j that we’re VERY uncomfortable to shoot with +P loads. I sold them both. I had a Model 60 Lady Smith. Best Smith ever along with a model 19.
For me a revolver needs to be 21oz or heavier but not over 26oz for the 38+P loads. I appendix carry. I have owned 13 S&W handguns over the years but now carry a Taurus M85 and the new Colt Cobra. I want a 1 7/8” or 2” bbl. Could not find a Smith to fit the bill.
Hope everything works out for you. I agree with above post, to stay with what you’ve got until you hear back from Smith and know what your options are. Good luck !

Be SAFE and Shoot often!

I'm not sure what you're saying.

Are you saying that having a back up weapon is a good idea or being required to qualify with it is a good idea

As a citizen I'm not going to be issued a replacement weapon and I'm not going to have to qualify with it.

Another vote for Shield in 9mm...cheaper ammo for practice and one more round. That's why I chose it over the 40. I'd also say spring for the 2.0. I've not shot the 2.0 Shield, but I own the 2.0 full size 9mm. The trigger and textured grip blow my 1.0 shield out of the water.

Your post was about having one weapon for training and another identical weapon to carry. My post pointed out that cops must train and qualify with the weapon they carry, and that seems like a reasonable standard. I was attempting to infer that a citizen who doesn't ever shoot a weapon, but carries it for self-defense, may face some difficult questions . . .

The majority of people I know of are instructors themselves or people who train a lot and have some connection to the shooting sports industry. They wouldn't have any problem explaining why they have and identical set of guns one for training and one for self defense.

A random private citizen such as myself might have a problem explaining it to the police's satisfaction but it's not illegal.

Police are required to train and qualify with their weapon as a condition of employment a private citizen should not be required to train and qualify as a prerequisite to exercising a civil liberty.

OK but why?

If you were the first person to respond to a shooting call when would the fact that I even had 2 identical guns come up? How would you even know? How many times do people post pictures of their collection of 20 (basically) identical J-Frames? How often does some one post pictures of a half a dozen 1911s? I've seen people on Glock Talk who own multiples of the same gun.

Even if you did go through my safe I'm not going to tell you why I have 2 identical Glock 19s so how do you ascertain my motive?

The only way I see a problem is (as usual) because the citizen opened his mouth and said too much.

Default 2 IDENTICAL GUNS?

IF NOT ILLEGAL you "SHOULDN'T" have to explain squat. IF someone were a LEO/competitor, or just felt like it, I can fully understand having identical guns. Think Jerry Miculek shows up to a competition without an IDENTICAL spare/back up, or 3-4? IF you have the $ & it's legal, IT'S YOUR BIZ. As far as qualifying with an "identical" gun, it seems like a given if you can do it with 1 you SHOULD be able to do it with the other. Having to PROVE it??? NO BIGGIE.

Why?? It's not illegal.......does it make the person look like a professional assassin or something????

I've seen photos here with dozens of J-frames, scores of N-frames.

My primary carry gun has been a 3913NL since about 1992/3.... had and still have a first year 3913..... picked up a few other 3913s and 3914 over the last 25 years at great prices. I like to carry a stainless gun in the summer and a blued gun in fall and winter

Ill toss out my recommendation..340PD, or a 360PD they carry soooo nice. And when you don't have any steel j frames to compare to, the recoil is just fine... I have two, a MP340 that I converted to a ti cylinder and a 340PD. The MP is my range slave and the PD is for carry.

It's 12:35 in the morning and I have the revolver boxed up ready to be dropped off at FEDEX. I predict one of several things will occur with S&W. based on previous experience with them;

1. A month or two will pass before I randomly get a repair quote from S&W in the mail for costs of repair (out of my pocket)

2. A month or two will pass before I get a email alerting me that a FEDEX package is on it's way back to me, pistol has been checked and it all within spec's.

3. 3 months will pass before I get a letter from S&W telling me that it's unrepairable and that I need to buy a new gun.

Maybe I'm just tired & cranky but what do you guys think S&W's gonna do?

Warranty work almost never has the owner cost a dime to repair.

How long it will take S&W to repair and get it back to you is the unknown.

S&W generally has a very high customers service reputation. As always individual specific isolated cases and errors do occur.

This gives you a great concealed package that can be brought into action very quickly.
S&W Model 59 magazines fit (grip adapters are available) giving 15 round reloads. My daughter carries a P11 that my brother bought her as a university graduation present.

Perfect time to go to a gun shop rent or borrow from friends and shoot them all. We can suggest all we want but the obevious answer is yours and only yours.
Always thought About a 40cal. but after shooting it I went to a 9mm for CCW. My shooting buds were all shooting brand x,y and z. I did end up with x but only after actually trying all of them. "Advice" is great but for a big decision like CCW --- make it yourself. Just my 2 cents. Jim

You are making a serious mistake here! Buying what you want, and need, NOW, and having an excuse to get a free gun later, is not to be trifled with.

It's a great opportunity to tell your wife it was a straight trade, TWICE!

Net arsenal increase one , while it looks like zero!

Don't miss this opportunity!

I own both the 638 J-frame and a 9mm SW Performance Center Shield. I find both are accurate, controllable, and easy to shoot and conceal. The Performance Center 9mm Shield has a much better trigger and a ported barrel for less "jump". The 638 is just a great gun....lightweight and easy to shoot...at least for me. I use both on a regular basis. In my opinion get your J-frame back and get a shield.
