Carrying at the gym
Joined a gym about 2 weeks ago and I've been going everyday. I can't see anyway to safely carry my M&P 9c while using weight machines, fast walking on treadmill, or jumping/rolling around in group classes. Not gonna buy a pocket gun anytime soon. Don't want to leave it in the car or in a locker, so I leave it at home. I don't like being out unarmed, but I like being in the gym. What do y'all gym rats do?

Not a gym rat, but I do a lot of walking on trails. Shorts, T-Shirt, and small belt pack. Add a water bottle = trail runner.

Protection in the gym?
I'm sure there are some HGH studs at the gym to protect you.

Not a fan of leaving in the car. Aside from leaving it at home, that may be the only other option, though

I have a forty year old leather portfolio - my manpurse now that I'm retired - and I put all my stuff - wallet, phone, glasses, change, gun and pocket knife - in it so the junk doesn't roll out of my pockets as I exercise. My gym has wall lockers, available first come, first serve, with a key that has an elastic lanyard that goes on my wrist. I lock up the manpurse, take the key, and go exercise. The gym layout is such that I can always see the locker, and to me, better there than out of my sight outside in my car. Some people have commented on the portfolio, and then I make a joke of my manpurse and what it does to keep my stuff from falling out of pockets, but say nothing about some of the contents.

For a pistol that size, the only real choice is a fanny pack designed to carry a pistol. Many are designed to look rather innocuous. Unfortunately, depending on your preferred workout, you may have to take it off at some point (if you wear a lifting belt for squats or deads, for example). Then a fanny pack becomes off-body carry by default. I'm not a fan.
I vote for locking it your car in a small gun vault designed for that purpose. Whatever you decide, do NOT lock it in a locker. There are some people who go to gyms and rec centers specifically to break into lockers just to see what they can steal: wallets, phones, watches, jewelry, and, yes, firearms. Most lockers at commercial gyms can be popped open with a screw driver. If you buy a big, expensive lock with a hardened hasp, all that does is tell the thief that there is something worth stealing inside.
Personally, I feel pretty safe in a gym. The weight stacks on machines would make decent cover, and a five-pound plate or two hurled at someone's head would make him think twice. There are usually mirrors everywhere, so someone would have a hard time flanking you. If you still feel the need to be armed at the gym, pepper spray or a neck knife is way more doable than even a compact, double-stack pistol. However, if you stay well clear of those chest thumping, alpha-silverback threat displays, you shouldn't really have too many problems in the gym. But, like anywhere you go, keep your head up in the parking lot.

I hit the YMCA 4 times a week...posted no firearms tobacco or booze so I leave the Smith at home. I also belong to a MMA gym for basic instruction on fighting which was worth every cent... almost as good as a firearm. I would encourage ANYONE to join a gym..youll get fit and feel better. BTW I have no Issue with a business that posts no firearms...in the YMCA case its a CHristian off shoot hence the regs.

Whenever my wife drags me to the gym, I carry it in a small gym bag that has my clothes in it. I keep the bag beside whatever equipment I'm on, always in sight.

To be clear, I'm just bringing up the subject of unusual places to carry. Just want to see what others do. If I thought the gym (or any particular place, for that matter) was dangerous, I wouldn't go there. I do my best to stick to the rule of carrying everywhere I go that the law allows. Like many of you here, I come across places in my travels that do not allow weapons and/ or where carrying is just not practical.

If that works for you, that's great. But if I saw someone carrying a bag around while they work out, I'd think they must have something valuable in it.

Get a Tuffy Lock box fits under the passenger seat and has a circular lock that's is almost impossible to pick the lock .. Mine is bolted to the seat bolts and is very secure .. not a box with a cable that can be easily cut with wire cutters ..

I realized a long time ago that it would be better to have a small gun on me than no gun at all. I bought a P3AT for when I needed to be extra discreet. I was working as a salesman and didn't want to print in customers offices. I still always pocket carry it regardless of my CCW, especially at home.
I put it in the bento box if riding my bike and while I don't go to the gym, I use it with a bellyband and position the gun right in front of my hip bone when running.
My thought is that it's better to have this gun on me than my subcompact locked in the car.

Well, they see my towel hanging out of it, ear phone cord, my keys dangling, etc. Plus I don't really go from machine to machine. Usually just one, to pacify my wife.

Well, there have been shootings at gyms, and the parking lot isn't a crime free zone either. It's not that I think the gym is a dangerous place. I carry there for the same reason I carry everywhere else.

So?....I have mine always at my feet with my towel sticking out. It is never more than a foot or two away from the front of me. Wallet and keys in there too. A lot of folks have their bags with them in my gym - not unusual to see.

I don't have a wife dragging me to the gym but when I did go to the gym (in 2010 I had a membership but the gym is long gone now) I went several times a week and I carried a small gym bag and kept everything in next to the equipment I was using. On occasion I used a locker but I preferred keeping my gun near me.
I didn't figure anyone was gonna grab the silly bag but there was always a possibility but one yell would have a lot of folks glaring at the perp so I didn't worry about it.
Not going to the gym makes life easier, if not healthier.....

Great job going to the gym. Good health and fitness does a boatload more to keep you alive and healthy than carrying a gun. But they are certainly not mutually exclusive.
My gym bans guns. They dont even want off duty cops carrying. I reserve my preaching to the choir comment on that. Or what I do or do not do.
But nobody is banning these guns. Armed and not dangerous.

Just lock it in the car, if you are in a decent area the odds of your car being broken into is quite low. If the cost is a concern then consider the Ruger EC9S, for about 250 bucks you get an outstanding pocket pistol. BTW, I have two of the LC9S pistols and have probably put at least 2000 rounds downrange without one single failure of any description. The difference between the cheaper EC9S and more expensive LC9S is the sights, on the EC9S they are cast as part of the slide and the LC9S has dovetail mounted sights.
I'll also note that I do some street running every day and due to concerns about the number of Pit Bulls and Rottweilers in the area I always have my LC9S in my right front pocket. Works just fine in the Carhartt blue jeans I run in.

I have a safe in my car. My car is a SUV. Very nice, clean, but, 13 years old. I don’t think anyone is bothering with 13 year old SUVs. Besides about the only place I use the safe is in a good safe area well off the beaten path. One of the very few places I would go unarmed.

How often do we turn on the news and hear "Things like that never happen here, it's such a nice neighborhood."?

The last is why I bring my piece into the gym. I don't want to get mugged because I'm unarmed, on the way back to my car where my gun is locked up. I hear ya on the locker business, but in my gym the locker isn't in the shower room or some other out of the way place. If it were, I'd be locking it in the car. As it is, I can see the bank of lockers just 10-50 feet from where I'm exercising, as can the many other people in the place who use the lockers too.

Impressive guns! How many rounds...uhhh... reps you got through those guns? Unlike my EDC, yours get better with a high round count.

I carry mine in my concealed carry vest and when I'm changing I take it off and lock it in a locker with the rest of my clothes and gym bag using my personal combination lock. There is an attendant on duty in the locker room and it is very busy so the chances of anyone prying open a locker to break into it is lower than the probability of a car in the parking lot getting broken into.

I either leave it in the car or in the locker (which is my lock); no big deal as I do not feel the need to actually have it on me while working out.

I would stow my firearm in my car, in an appropriate gun safe.
I mainly used the on-base gym. Firearms not allowed (except in Iraq).
Now, we have our own gym.

Some folks live in sub-par areas. More important, valid, and consistent with proper personal defense mindset - you can't make an appointment for an emergency. I carry pretty much all the time and don't go where I can't be armed. I know I am not the only person armed there, and some of the staff have access to a lockbox with a gun in it by the owner's preference.
Remember that the only reason to carry a pistol is that you have no reason to expect a problem requiring a gun. If you have reason to expect a problem and can't be somewhere else, take a rifle.

If I’m not carrying it is illegal to carry there. Then it depends, I may just rely on the always carry never tell.

Lots of good self-defense tools at the gym. No need to carry there.

@the OP, if you don't want to keep it in your vehicle locked or your gym prohibits firearms on premise and/or you don't want to keep it in your locker...I think you answered the question.
I do not have any suggestions for carrying on your person at the gym. I would suggest re-evaluating locking it in a vehicle or buying your own equipment for home.

I'm in the leave it in the car camp. That's also why I have some of what I call "truck guns" (I have a truck). Cheaper or worn guns that have minimal monetary value but have proven reliable. Example could include: A Taurus bought cheap, a RIA, an old no finish revolver, etc. Even the Shield if they continue to sell in the $200 range often enough. My old early version 669 fits the bill. It's seen so much use over the years it's definitely a beater and I expect has little value, but it's reliable. So if going somewhere I need to leave the gun in the car, I just bring one of my "truck guns".

Leave it in the car. Gym lockers are more insecure than your average locked car in a gym parking lot.
I do not know what you do in a gym, but most folk seem to drift from machine to machine and waste time. Probably can pack an N-frame OWB under a sweat shirt that sees no actual sweat.
For my own part, I am a power/oly weight lifter from way back. Packing heat is just not practical when performing those lifts. Most I could manage would be a folding knife with clip inside a front pocket. Even a P-32 would be impractical.
OTOH, packing while running or cycling is a problem I have solved.

Carry Anywhere?
I agree with the OP about not leaving the gun in
the car. Some gyms don't really have good lighting
outside, either.
If you can't carry the full-size, an NAA Mini or a really small
auto can be carried using a bellyband rig. I mean one that
doesn't have an external holster, but kind of a pocket with
a sweatprotector. You can adjust where you want it on
your torso, and if snug-fitting, the gun will Not come out.
Just a thought...(made by Gould & Goodrich Mod.T727)

I realize you said you are not going to buy a pocket gun but I solved that problem w/my LCP in the L/F pocket of my gym pants.
