Default 5 rounds of 357 magnum

I keep a model 640-1 j frame in the night stand. That's 5 rounds of 357 magnum hollow points and a very intense LED flash light right beside it. If necessary a j frame speed loader with 5 more 357 rounds are there incase I did not blind the intruder with the muzzle flash or the flash light. The flash light is also a very nice club if it comes to that. 😵☠💀

Our main HD gun is a model 66 w/4" barrel, but there is always a 442 close by and ready to roll.
I would say if a jframe is what you have and it's what you are comfortable with, it's good enough for HD.
I've got a couple semi autos but my wife is not as fluent or comfortable with them as she is a revolver so even though there's a Glock, an SD9ve and a couple other suitable semi-autos in the safe, there's a model 66 beside the bed, loaded with 38+p and two speed loaders with 357s.
I just put night sights on the 66 and both my 442 and 66 have Crimson Trace lasers. The lasers are mostly for me if I have to wake up in the middle of the night and don't have time to put my glasses on. Without my glasses I can't see the sights clearly at all. Although my wife with near perfect vision is also a much better shot using the laser than without. I say this fully knowing that in the event we are awakened in the middle of the night and need a gun for defense, neither of us will be using the sights.

A J frame loaded with good defensive rounds is a lot of gun in the right hands.

Stunguns and subsequent Tasers didn't help. You can't carry everything.

Further memory lane sidetrack. I watched as a detective wearing an abbreviated nylon stungun case (Nova stungun) try to sit in his car. The arrangement caused the stungun button to activate as he sat, causing him to hop up and then due to his balance point to sit back down again, repeat....... No, I didn't help. Would you?
In my early days the only gear on the gunbelt was the gun, dump pouches or speedloader carriers, a single cuff case and a baton ring. Maybe a radio carrier, if you could get one (for the brick). Not many people wanted to carry the big can of Mace. I carried a folding knife stuffed into the tunnel loop of (behind) my speedloader carrier (common way to carry a Buck 110).

Most guys either chose an optional slim open-top cuff case (versus the closed style), or just carried them slipped over the top of their uniform pants belt, and behind their gunbelt, on the front. Lots of open real estate on gunbelts in those days. Guys working busy beats might carry a double cuff case and another set tucked into their belts.

The guys wearing Buscaderos had a mix of styles when it came to the number of bullet loops that might be on their belts, from loops fully across the back to just a few on the belt, behind the holster, and maybe a couple in front of the holster (to top off). This was regardless of whether they'd had a speedloader double carrier sewn onto the front/offside of the their gunbelt. Holsters varied, but there were many dropped shanks and holsters on swivels. Many guys had Hoyt's sewn onto their Buscadero belts.

Nowadays, of course, gunbelts are more often equipment belts. I liked finishing my career in plainclothes, as it allowed me to have a simpler gear setup under my suit or sport coat, more reminiscent of the older days.

3" M10 RB by the bed, M36 in my coat pocket in cold weather. each with two speedloaders. One more round and better control of the M10 in the house where size and weight don't matter

"Pajamas" is where the J-frame shines!

Nothing wrong with your HD choice. If that was the only firearm I had, it would serve my needs well. I take one out of the holster each night and put it under a pillow. There's other stuff to back it up within a few feet, but that's what I would grab.

This sounds like the perfect set up to me. And where I'd like to eventually end up. I think I'd do better with a Model 10 with either a 4" tapered barrel or a 2 or 3" HB for HD. And keep the 442 for carry. I would eventually like a steel J frame too.

And 1 N frame for giggles. And I'd love a Victory. So I guess that's my ideal family.

442
36 / 60
M10
38/44
Victory
And oh yeah, probably a .22 of some sort. I've also been tempted by an SP101 and a Speed Six. But I guess that's a different forum. LOL. And we all need at least 1 good cowboy single action, eh?

My current revolvers:
442
Colt DS
M19 6"
(2) centennial arms black powder single actions. 1860 .44 and a Navy .36.

I don't fall into the camp of the J Frame being a great choice for EDC but I can understand the argument. I can not however understand the choice of a J Frame for primary home defense unless that's all you have. If you're not carrying it concealed the small size and lightweight are no longer advantages. Just my .02

I know the main thing is to just practice, and shoot and hardware is secondary. But it's a gun forum. Here we talk about guns. And since this is the self defense forum, I thought it was an appropriate question.

Plus I have to add, the thread was about home defense. Not carrying. But you could apply the same question to carrying. I just wasn't in this particular instance. It's something that gets discussed pretty regularly though on gun boards all over.

Protecting your home with a S&W J frame does not
automatically compare it to being a little better than
a butter knife.
Nor, does it require any sort of a "fess up" type firearm.

If you can shoot accurately your good...IMHO.

I hear you, it's just a lot of people would try to make you think you're stupid for only keeping one as your HD gun. So I was seeing how many people might go against that grain.

I'm actually kind of surprised at how many there are. I thought I might be in a tiny minority.

When I'm not carrying it concealed, my snubby 60 is stashed for easy access in a drawer in the family room. I keep several firearms at the ready, including a Glock 19 in our bedroom.

Default HD VS EDC...

2 Totally different animals for me. A HD gun has no size/wt limits, an EDC gun here in the south absolutely does. So for me a tiny/light gun in a t-shirt pocket (wallet holster) 24/7 & either a Sig 226 9mm or Sig P220 45acp (in a holster/with no safety) in the bed head board, ready to draw & fire. WHY A HOLSTER? After a bad dream/sleep walking incident where I woke up standing, pointing my 226 into my bedroom closet, I made some changes & even kept the chamber empty for a while. I've only sleep walked twice in my life, THAT I'M AWARE OF. Good to have A BIT of a waking up/getting your bearings deal going on, for me. YMMV.

My normal carry gun is a 642, occasionally a 638 and when its cold sometimes a 64 snubby. What I carry during the day sits on my nightstand at night.

For many, many years I have had a Model 36 with additional reload strips on my person and another one on the bed stand. I practice with them regularly and feel adequately prepared.

Your current lineup is outstanding. 6" m19 is perfect for the house. 4" was only the best compromise for a cop belt gun.and a detective special is a great gun. 442 for warm weather, ds in a winter coat, you got it all covered. Of course adding a few more can't hurt.....😊

Yeah. I think you're right. I think I gotta get the lead out of my Colt DS because I'm way less accurate with it than my 442. And I think the barrel is leaded. It could be the difference in triggers though.

I don't have a lewis lead remover. They're on back order at brownells and I've yet to locate some copper chore boy...... I'm going to a local hardware store tomorrow that might just have some. It's known to have a lot of interesting stuff.

At present my EDC J-frame is the only handgun I have left, so yes, it's also for home defense.

So is a twelve gauge side-by-side sawed to twenty inches, with a supply of #4 buck.

I like #4 the best too. I've read some books about vietnam and they sometimes used #4 and I've read it worked well.

A J-frame for HD? Yes.... and for much more!

I rely on the same two guns that have kept me alive since 1977. My Colt 357 was my duty weapon, the M49 my back-up and off-duty. I cannot count the literally tens of thousands of rounds I have put through these.

The M49 is on my person as long as I'm awake; the Colt sits by the bed. When I leave the house, they both go with me. Why fix what's not broken?

I rely on the same two guns that have kept me alive since 1977. My Colt 357 was my duty weapon, the M49 my back-up and off-duty. I cannot count the literally tens of thousands of rounds I have put through these.

The M49 is on my person as long as I'm awake; the Colt sits by the bed. When I leave the house, they both go with me. Why fix what's not broken?
Indeed.

Unnecessary to fix what hasn't been demonstrated to be a "problem".

92FS / thumbs up.....

You're right, Mike. Threads about revolvers in general, J frames in particular always evolve into the old caliber/capacity debate, a no-win situation.

My EDC J-Frame is always somewhat concealed next to the bed...
However, as backup, there's also a Glock 32 with plenty of extra mags in the closet within easy reach....

My J Frame carry is one of the loaded guns in quick open safes ready for HD depending on where I am. I have practiced opening the floor safe in the middle of the night from sleep so it may be a Remington 870 or anything in between.
