Default OK, be honest, who in here relies on a J frame for HD?

My carry gun is my 442 and lately I've just been keeping it by my bed for HD duty. With my Surefire light. I do practice one handed almost every time I shoot. (except I haven't shot lately from health problems this summer) Harries and FBI method. And sometimes light on the cheek method. I don't typically shoot a lot of rounds that way. But usually some. Probably should do more that way and less 2 handed. LOL.

Anyways... I know there are better guns. I have autos, but with my lifestyle, the bedside gun sits for too long for me to be comfortable with it. I don't shoot enough at times and I don't always lube it. I don't have much money and I don't really like chambering a self defense round several times. So I'd rather rely on a revolver. I do keep an auto handy, but right now the first gun I'd grab is my 442.

The other HD revolver I have is my model 19. But it's a 6"er and kind of gangly and front heavy and I'm not real confident that in the middle of the night all groggy that I'd be able to wield it 1 handed effectively. I do have a Colt DS but don't shoot it well at all, much less 1 handed.

Some day I'd like a different revolver for HD. But then I get to thinking, what really would I rather have? A 2" K frame? A steel J? Is 1 more round THAT big of a deal? Might be....

I kind of think a model 12 with a 2-4" barrel might be a good idea for that type of a gun. But if you go K frame you almost want to be able to shoot +p's... You know?

2" 10 would be good. 3" 36 if you are OK with 5 rounds.....

I know a lot of guys would be soiling their pants about how lousy a J frame is a for a Home Defense gun, but I'm just curious if anyone else actually relies on one for that.

I do not, but if it is what you are used to & you are not willing to put the time in with something else, then I would go with it. I would include a speed loader & some practice with that too. Ya just never know how things go down. Attackers have come in, gotten shot at & returned after getting reinforcements

Not a J, but I keep a Ruger SP-101 snubbie in the quick access safe next to the bed. Same 5 shots, though.

I did for several years, though not really by choice. My 642 EDC was also the only gun I had, so it served the HD role, too. Then I finally got around to getting my Beretta 92FS out of storage, and it served the HD role while I carried my 642. Now, my Beretta PX4 Compact is serving both EDC and HD roles, with my 642 as a back-up HD gun.

I have a Model 36 3 inch along with 2 HKS speedloaders and a flashlight in a little wall safe, in the far end of the house. Mostly for my wife and family to grab if they need it.

The main thing is to HAVE A ( RELIABLE ) GUN.

You're 90+% there if you simply do that.
Caliber doesn't really matter all that much in that scenario.

Whatever you do, don't leave it out in plain sight while you are sleeping. An intruder may slip into the room while you sleep, see it, and shoot you with your own gun.

Lay a print magazine, paper towel, cloth towel, hankerchief, or something on top of it that does not look out of place, and is easily removed.
Waaaayyy too many people don't realize the advantage they are giving a bad guy when they sleep with a loaded gun in plain sight nearby.

I keep a J frame in the bedside safe along with a full sized M&P45 ( with light attached.) The M&P 45 is my primary HD gun. It's reliable as a hammer and with the light attached (and TFO night sights) is perfectly suited for the job. The J frame is there for the wife and/or if I just want to slip something in my pocket for a quick and discrete property check.

Sorta, I keep the J frame stashed in the kitchen with snake shot as rattle snakes show up in the yard occasionally. I keep an old Smith riot gun behind the bedroom door for basic home defense. There's a 9mm I can touch with my toe as I type this. Oh, and there's a Ruger SA6 22 loaded with CB longs in the parlor in case of squirrel attack. There's a Remington 512-X with yellowjackets in the hall as a utility catch all.

Sometimes the only thing I have out is my J Frame. If not the J Frame, it is some flavor of 6 shot revolver.

Very nice!

Another big I-frame Terrier fan here. Most people don't realize how much smaller they are than the current J-frame with a "magnum capable" frame window.

And I thought I was about the only person in the country who carries .38 S&W in a speed strip...

I have a 640 in my office Desk drawer which is on the main level of the house. A Glock 22 for Bedside, and in the basement, a whole bunch of goodies.

Default Relies on???

No, I don't rely on my J frames for SD. But I have them for that purpose and they are there if I need them.

I started marketing my holsters on-line about 2007 and put up the company website in 2008. I kept track of actual holster orders by handgun make and model for years. Bear in mind that this was the height of the plastic fantastic, high capacity, semi-auto handguns. At least once per month there was a new super-duper automatic pistol announced. One would think that the days of the revolver were over, if relying only on industry publications.

In every year that I kept records for prior to my retirement in 2015 the results were consistent, with about 60% of all holster orders being for revolvers, and about 30% of all orders being for J-frame S&W's.

Conclusion: There are a lot of those J-frames around and a lot of people relying on them for personal defense.

Default I live in a civilized area...

...thus little need for a ‘home defense’ gun. I dial 911. Never a need for that, either, but I digress...

That said, in 69 trips around the sun whilst living mostly in big cities, I have never experienced a need to shoot someone in my house.

However, should the need occur I am good to go with my 642 or 60, NY-1.

Be safe.

I keep a new Colt Cobra with a speed strip and a flashlight close at hand with a J frame size Taurus M85 and a speed strip in a fast response safe near by.
Had a 642 & 360J S&W but sold them for the two above because I could shoot +P ammo in the heavier guns (25 & 21oz vs two 14oz revolvers) all day.
To answer your question. Yes the 442 with a speed strip or speed loader is good for a HD gun but it doesn’t hurt to have backup. JMO
The main thing is to practice as much as you are able and use the gun(s) you feel the most comfortable with and shoot well.
A Lady Smith model 60 with hammer is my favorite. It handles 38+P & 357mag with enough weight (21oz)to shoot comfortably.

Be SAFE and Shoot often!

When I retired out, I kept my S&W 12 ga riot gun and my Model 10 3".

I carry a Model 60 in a iwb holster when wearing something light like a t shirt. Loaded with Golden Sabers +P I have 100% confidence in the gun, ammo and myself. I prefer a 3" K frame for SD but the J frame conceals a little better

Nothing wrong w/a J for home defense. If you shoot it well, and often (perishable skill), no reason to have a K frame unless you want one. I keep a Model 10 snub that was my service gun close by along w/speedloaders and a flashlight. My EDC is the 340PD only b/c the K frame snub is too heavy & bulky for my retirement life. I’d be okay w/my EDC for HD if I didn’t already have the K frame.

My 340 back up gun is in the nightstand, along with my 64-2 service revolver, when I'm home. In years past a few other J frames have been stashed in various places around the house in case I need a gun in a hurry. Currently I have SP-101's in place of the J frames, mainly to justify the assortment of used 101's I've bought recently. If I keep accumulating K frame snubs like I've been doing I'll probably have them take the place of the 101's.

If I am not wearing pajamas I have a J on me. But I also have a 4" Bulldog revolver and a Rossi carbine avalible if needed. Both have very nice night sights. (.44Spl, because .357 is too loud for me.)

While a 1911 is bedside, I do have a couple of J frames scattered here and there for quick access.

From a tactically oriented gun guy...

Yes the model 19 is better. Its heavier, so it will have less recoil. And the longer barrel is better for accuracy. Plus the extra bullet gives you 20% more ammo in the gun. Put on a good comfy grip, perhaps like a cheap hogue, and you should be good to go, unless you have hand strength issues.

Yes technically, a high quality auto is better all day long, but as you said, you are not comfortable with them and likely don't trust them. So in your case, a revolver is probably a better choice.

And as I'm sure you are aware (or not), a long gun is superior for home defense. A double barrel shotgun, pump shotgun, semi auto 5.56, semi auto shotgun, pistol caliber carbine, etc, all superior.

I even have a rather controversial, but well reasoned and well thought out home defense recommendation for those with hand strength issues.... A used $169 Ruger 10/22 with a factory Ruger 25 round magazine loaded with CCI stingers is a heck of a home defense weapon. I'd easily call it superior to a j-frame for home defense. Tape a flashlight to the fore-end , and good to go.

I did back when I lived with roommates and my 637 was all I had. I've since moved up to a 4" 686+.

While I sometimes carry a 642, I have not ever used it on the nightstand. Before the Glock 19, it was a S&W 66 with a 4" barrel - about ideal for 1 or 2 handed shooting

Although I carry a 642, I can shoot much better with my 4" 686. I see no reason to defend my home with a small carry gun when you have a 686 sitting in your nightstand next to the bed. I mean it's a 686! Who wouldn't want to use a 686?

Just to be clear, I've shot autos more than revolvers. And I did carry a G26 for about a year. But the plain fact is I like revolvers better. I go through ups and downs with my health fighting lyme disease and sometimes a gun might sit for a bit. And I'm not comfortable with autos that don't get lubed somewhat regularly. I've never had issues with them at the range, but typically, they're getting lubed before I shoot. I have tested them at times to shoot them first before lubing, just to see if they'll work. My M9 has right at 4k rounds in it and it's broken in. But I'm still not sure I trust it if it sat for a while. Grease stays put better, but still....

As far as carry guns go, I've carried revolvers far more than autos. I have carried autos, just not nearly as much as my Colt DS or 442. I don't shoot the revolvers as well as the autos I've had, but there are other attributes I like more. My last try at an auto for carrying was a G43. I shot it nominally better than my 442, but the mags that I put an extension on, I was getting bad ejection. Brass to the face. And I just didn't like it as much as the 442. The 442 carries easier in a pocket when I want to do that. And I just trust it more. Limp wristing, no limp wristing. I don't know, I just don't like how the ejection was going with that gun. It was so weak at times.

Anyways..... I digress. I do practice my reloads pretty regularly with my 442. Mostly from a speed strip. I was thinking it might be a good idea to stash some speed loaders in convenient spots in the house, in case I need to reload and not wearing pants. Either that or rig one up to the lanyard on my light..... That could work.

Your only goal with a HD or SD gun is to make that nice fella' remember that he has something else to do at the moment. a J frame is just fine . . .

I keep a Glock 19 close by at home. But a J frame wouldn’t bother me either.

My model 37 with a bobbed hammer is my bedside gun, carry gun and was my backup gun for 37 years as a LEO. I have great confidence in it, always goes boom and keep a HKS speed loader close at hand. I have some inverted wadcutters that are easy on my 70+ year old hand and have taken out a few varmints in it's time. I think I will keep it!!

A Jframe would probably work fine.

That said, I view it as a purpose driven tool, with the primary purpose aimed at concealment. As such, the J compromises on capacity and site radius.

For home defense, I like a full size service pistol. Like the 686p 4” or a 1911 government .45.

I don't know if I can say I "rely" on a J-Frame revolver for home defense (more like last line of defense), but I have a model 317 with a DeSantis Clip-Grip in my sweats resting comfortably in a Nemesis pocket holster as I type this. Is it the ultimate HD gun? Nope. But fully loaded it doesn't seem to weigh much more than a Kleenex, so it's easy to keep on me if I'm wearing at least a pair of boxers. It's handy if I'm taking out the trash or what have you. Once ensconced in the bedroom for the night, I have other options, but no one has yet mentioned that it's hard to beat a snubby J-Frame for weapon retention, especially a Centennial model. Realistically though, unless you sell drugs out of your house, a J-Frame is probably more than you will ever need for home defense.

My Beretta PX4 Sub Compact lays on the table next to my bed in plain sight !! to get in to my bedroom you would have to get by a 75 pound GSD ( German Shepherd Dog) that sleeps outside of my door .. The racket she would make .. Rather the Perp would be making as she would be biting with the force to break an arm or leg bone ..

If they would manage to get by her the Beretta lying in plain sight would then be but to use ..

A J-frame you know how to use beats the hell out of a shotgun you're clueless with.

If one of my J's is what I was carrying that day/night, then it's often what's left out overnight (for use the next day). Ditto for any other handgun I may have been carrying as a retirement CCW choice.

I used to use my 6-shot service revolver for clearing a house or other structure on alarm calls or looking for a suspect, so only having 1 less round in a J-frame isn't exactly an earth-shattering experience.

That is the one place that is most important to defend.

I have no problem with 5 shots as a primary while out and about, but at home, double stack and an extra mag is always at hand.

yeah I can relate but I also had a quadruple speedloader pouch (after I found it) and frequently a 669 either in a shoulder holster under my shirt (It fit well in the gap in my vest under my arm), or in my belt.

I don't think I ever saw anyone else with the quadruple speedloader pouch. It was/is (still in a closet somewhere) either Bianchi or Safariland and black basketweave. It was made for 38/357 but I converted into 44 (I made different thinner inserts). But yeah, a 6 shot with two speedloaders on the belt was normal.

I still think I can outshoot most of the current crop of deputies and their now G17s with my wheel gun. But in reality most cops don't really shoot that well and I think that's gotten worse.

I keep a Sig 1911 in the bedroom, and my shorts ( this time of year ) hang in there with my 642 as well. when the weather gets a bit cooler I carry the Sig so it is always there anyway and the 642 gets put back in the safe.

I remember seeing a handful of guys wearing the tall quad pouches. An occasional triple carrier appeared, too. One guy carried stacked double moonclips for his 52-2 in his double carrier.

They originally issued me a double (upside down) leather dump pouch, but I bought my own double speedloader carrier. For a while I used the dump pouches to hold a couple extra speedstrips. Later on I simply pocketed an extra speedloader or two, or the strips, to make room on the gunbelt. (Nobody liked crowded gunbelts in those days.)

Lots of guys were wearing authorized Buscadero rigs. Most of them had had the local leather shop sew speedloader pouches on their gunbelts, but still used bullet loops, too. Nice Western look. I didn't want to spend that kind of money to custom order a Buscadero rig back then. I'd rather spend it on off-duty leather and more guns.

Yep, it can be a little fun to run a DA or DAO revolver for shorter drills and demonstrate how it's possible to accurately shoot revolvers faster than the significant majority of normal cop (or CCW) pistol users nowadays.

Normally I carry Two J-Frames every day. Some days it’s a 442 in the pocket but I up the waistband gun to the 7 shot 357. So, at night it’s either of the guns pictured here. If the house alarm sounds the gun is close at hand. There is a Riot Gun in my closet but with that siren screaming so loud I doubt anyone is hanging around.

This 15-4 sits in my bed-side drawer beside a speed loader stoked with .38 Critical Defense. I could just as well replace it with one of my J frames, but I guess I feel I want something larger to find and grab in a dark adrenaline charged situation.

Yeah, I was issued dump pouches at one Dept and loops at another. I didn't use either. But then hardly did anyone else. Although I worked with one guy that was amazingly fast with loops. Most everyone bought their own speedloaders and pouches. Agencies tended to not spend a bunch on leather. Keeping open realestate on the gunbelt was always a challenge. Stunguns and subsequent Tasers didn't help. You can't carry everything.

Further memory lane sidetrack. I watched as a detective wearing an abbreviated nylon stungun case (Nova stungun) try to sit in his car. The arrangement caused the stungun button to activate as he sat, causing him to hop up and then due to his balance point to sit back down again, repeat....... No, I didn't help. Would you?

Have three snub nosed around the house. A 342 and 36 in J Frame and a 3.5 inch 27-2 (while not a J Frame it is a snub nose or as some tell me a small cannon).

Your thread is kinda strange.....Lots of people. Myself included carry J-frames.......So whats the big deal of justification? Carry what you want.......Nobody's opinion matters to you but yours.

I have a M442, and my "big" revolver, a M60-15, handy at night. They are in a field bag, so not visible. The M60 is in a side pocket that I can access in a hurry. Flashlight in one end pocket, and my cell phone in the other. Extra ammo inside with the 442.

Best,
Rick
