S&W M&P 9 Shield M 2.0
Hey there.
I enjoy my S&W's but... I also have a few Glocks too. I'm on the fence of picking another carry weapon.
I'm leaning towards the M&P 9 Shield. My other choice would be the G43. With the new trigger, price, and refined grip the S&W Shield is starting to gain favor with me. I saw a Hickock 45 review (I like this dudes reviews) and this guy is a big Glock fan, and yet he gives a great review for his Shield. I could be answering my own question here but I just like a little more information from the collective. Thanks

I bought my daughter and daughter-in-law Shields in 9mm with the thumb safety. Then I went back and bought myself one. I prefer the Shield over the Glock 43. Is it possible for you to rent both of these at a nearby range to try them before you make a purchase?

I have a Shield 1.0 and a 43. I prefer the Shield by a little bit. Here's what I see as the differences...
The Shield is a bit heavier than the 43 and I shoot better groups with the Shield than the 43.
The Shield comes standard with 7 round and 8 round mags (the Glock only has 6 round factory mags).
The Shield has better stock sights.
The Shield grip is longer and wider front to back, so if you have big hands it may fit better.
The Shield can be purchased for way less than the Glock.
The Glock is just a bit lighter and smaller than the Shield. It's also a bit flatter. It's just a little easier to conceal.
The Glock is easier to detail strip.
The sights on the Glock are easier to replace.
The Glock mags are easier to load (Shield mags are stiff).
The Glock slide is easier to rack.
The Glock grip is shorter and narrower. It may work better for you if you have small hands.
You wouldn't go wrong with either. Try to rent them both and see what you think.
Just my 2 cents.

Can't speak for the Glock but I have the Shield 9 and 40. I think you would be happy carrying the Shield, I carry both of mine often and really don't notice they are even there.

I have a Shield V1 (with safety) and a G43. I like them both. What Ziggy2525 said is very accurate. I do like the safety on the Shield for holstering purposes. I prefer the Shield V1 over the V2. If you can still get the Shield at or near the cost they have gone for in the fairly recent past I would consider the Shield a no-brainer choice. In my experience the sights on the Shield are near impossible to adjust, unnecessarily so.

Yes there is a range. Not sure if they have a shield to rent. I'll call them to find out.

Thanks Ziggy. Good info and I have large hands. My wifes G42 is tiny in my hand. My G27 fits well but I carry it outside the waist band under my shirt. Detail Strip? What's that

Pete, Hmm, could be because the Glock is a bit lighter. Thank you for your service.

Oink, thank you for your service. LEO input is important due to your experience. I need to put one in my hand at the range. Are the sights changeable?

I'm sure they're changeable, but I just wanted to adjust the POI a tad. Those buggers are tight and don't drift willingly. I mean holy mackerel!

I own a .45 Shield. It fits the same holster as my G26. And it now occupies that holster instead of the G26. I enjoy shooting it more, it is a .45, and it has something no current Glocks have: an active safety device.

Detail strip is when you completely take apart the pistol for cleaning, as opposed to just field striping where you remove the slide, barrel, and recoil spring.
Also, the sights are replacable. You need to pound them out with a brass punch and a large hammer. They only come out one way. Much, much tighter than any other pistol I’ve had - especially the rear sight. The rear sight has a set screw that’s easy to miss. The spring for the firing pin block is also under the rear sight. Need to be careful removing the rear sight not to lose that spring.

Mongo 1958--- Now that you've got alot of good information, You have to go the range and shoot these weapons (ALOT) weigh the info and decide for yourself. In the end your opinion is the only one that counts.

andyo5, thanks for your input. I have 2 45 ACP's. A Parra P14 and a SW E series with 5" Barrles. I'll check them out if they have one.

Jim. Absolutely. Thanks. FYI, the Shield is highly rated by Glock owners. I've been asking over at Glock Talk.

We have 3 9 mm Shields that I feed. All I do is feed em and clean em, they shoot every time the trigger is pulled. I would like to have a Glock, but I like the Shields.
Have a blessed day,
Leon

I have been carrying various Glocks at my PD job for 25 years. My off duty gun for quite a few of those was my Glock 26.
When the Shield first came out, a friend bought one and let me borrow it for a couple weeks to shoot and check out. I loved it so much that I bought the first one I could find (this was when Shields were almost impossible to find, it took me about 3 weeks to find a store with one in stock). It has been my off duty carry since I bought it and qualified with it.
For me, the Shield is a superb option for CCW. On mine, and most I have tried, the trigger is very Glock like. Light take up, a well defined wall, a reasonably crisp break, then an audible and tactile reset. No mushy trigger with no discernible reset like earlier M&Ps. The trigger is a little heavier than my Glocks, but not by much and the trigger is crisper than the Glocks, which make it seem somewhat lighter than it really is. Mine has been 100% reliable through a couple thousand rounds, even reliably feeding and shooting some of my older reloads that didn't feed well in my Glocks. It is also very accurate for what it is. Last year at qualifications, we had some time while waiting for dark to do the night shoot, so one of the guys wanted to do a competition. We were sitting in lawn chairs at about the 100' line. He proposed that we each draw and shoot 1 round while seated, taking as much time as we wanted to aim, but only shoot 1 rd. The person who got closest to the absolute center of mass won. They all used their full sized duty guns, I used my Shield. I won by a long shot. My shot was perfectly centered and, if we had been using B27 targets, it would have cut the exact center of the X ring. I'll freely admit there was a lot of luck involved, but the Shield was easily up to the challenge. Mine is a 1.0, from what I have read and seen, the 2.0 isn't much different except for the more aggressive texturing.
I had an opportunity a couple years ago to shoot a Glock 43 owned by another Officer. I absolutely HATED it. The gun itself was fine, the issue I had was that the gun didn't fit my hand well. When firing, the butt slammed into the joint in the base of my thumb. It slammed me so hard that my hand was sore for 2 days after firing 2 mags. Again, not a slam on the gun, just the way it fit my hand and I have never heard anyone else with this complaint. It was nothing at all like my G42 and I was sorely disappointed. The G43 was more snappy than my Shield, but not bad. I will say that the G43 I shot was eerily accurate, even more so than my Shield or almost any gun I have ever shot. After 1 mag at 7 yds, I went back to 50 ft for the second mag and my group was about the same size as it was at 7 yds, almost 1 ragged hole. The trigger, with the new trigger setup on the G42, G43 and Gen5 guns, was very good. A little heavier than the older Glocks, but VERY crisp for a poly framed gun. Reset was even more audible and tactile than older Glocks. For me, the G43 wouldn't fit in my pockets and I already had my Shield for IWB. It didn't do anything new and exciting for me, and it hurt me to shoot it, so I never bought one. If it had been small enough for me to pocket carry, I would have sucked up the pain and bought one to replace my G42, but it didn't, so I didn't.
Bottom line, either the Shield or the G43 would work well for IWB. The Shield is a little bigger, a little more capacity and easier to shoot. The G43 is smaller, lighter and easier to conceal. The best thing you can do is shoot each, decide which you like better and go buy one.

hey everyone I went to Academy Sports and took a look at the Smith & Wesson Shield 9 mm they fit well in my hand I like the feel of it it was the Generation 1 if you want to call it that but I liked. Based on averyones input, including Hickock 45, the 2.0 is the one I'm going to get. Thanks for your input.

I also have both. I back about two years ago, I bought a Shield 9 for my dad. I decided to break it in for him. It ran 100 percent with the 200 odd rounds I sent down range. I liked it enough to buy another for myself, and have had no problems either. Later I purchased a G43, which I actually carry because my employer won't authorize the Shields. Here are some observations:
- if you're used to shooting double stack pistols, the narrow Shield and 43 will initially throw you off. My advise is to get used to it.
- I can't really tell which is more accurate of the two. I think it boils down to the skill and preference of an individual shooter. The triggers on both are not as light as the larger pistols, but I'm not an advocate of changing out triggers on defensive pistols, so I advise people to train by dry fire and at the range, and learn to master what their gun came out of the box with.
- The Shield is slightly larger than the 43, but still narrower than a 26 or M&P9c, or similar offerings.
- There are always questions about magazine capacity. Personally I've come not to completely trust magazine extensions that aren't factory, so if the factory stock magazine is not enough, then carry several - they're small. If you must have the extensions, then apply them to a couple of mags, test them over time before hitting all your mags. I've also found that the stock base plate always conceals better than one of the extended versions.
- I think the real reason for folks wanting to increase the capacity of a single stack compact 9 rather than go with, say a Glock 26 is the fact that the single stack guns are thinner and will still conceal better, regardless.
- Its been said a bunch, but the micro 9s need to be kept clean and more importantly, lubed in order to function reliably. This is a general statement, but keep them clean and lubed.
- The Shield's standard sights are decent - the Glock is going to require better sights.
