Default "truck" Gun

Admin Edit-
Some of you believe a gun should never be left in a vehicle.
Some of you believe a gun should never be left in a vehicle unless it can't be avoided- like for a short stop.

Some of you believe it is OK to leave a gun in a car.

Pick the one you like, and understand you probably won't be able to make others think like you.
DON'T bicker about the topic.
///////////////////////////////////////////

original post-

need a gun to be a dedicated truck gun. Thought about a cheap AR ($700ish)

10mm Rock Island, Taurus .44 Mag (hate the barrel porting though). maybe a .44 Special.

Want it "big" enough to penetrate car doors

accurate enough for 25 yard+ shots

want it to be somewhat of a "throw away" since, if I ever have to use it, I will probably lose it to the Police, OR, if its stolen, I wont be out $3000.

My thinking is, "these days" a handgun just seems so inadequate for a truck gun. Long shots seem more likely? Love the Springfield AR "pistol" but pricey

am I just being paranoid?

Frisco isn’t exactly the hot bed of crime in north Texas to go around with an AR in the car or truck but I think you are on the right track with the 10mm. I would go with a Glock 20 with 15 round mags and some really hot buffalo bore ammo. Never leave a firearm unsecured in your car or truck though.

Since buffalo bore has a variety of hot loads some better at penetrating objects versus animal or human flesh let me clarify that I use Buffalo Barnes Tac Xp. For penetrating non flesh objects you need a flat nosed non-expanding bullet. The ones I keep in my 10mm produce 627ft. lbs traveling at 1350 FPS.

I keep a long gun in both my vehicles all the time. I have asked local law enforcement about this practice. They don't have any problems with it. I went pump shotgun because I understand them well and they can be inexpensive. I think a cheap AR makes sense also. I have NEVER met an older local fire fighter who didn't have a long gun in their vehicle. I figure that if I can get back to the truck I will driving away as fast as possible but one never really knows how things might shake out. Right now terrorism seems to be beaten down pretty well but who knows what the next election might bring us.

Carry anything you want.........Don't leave it in your "truck" when you're not in it.

IE......I have "tractor" guns......But they don't stay on the tractor.

If you ever need it it will probably be in a hurry, I'd think a long gun will be awkward inside a a vehicle and take too long to get into position to use. A hand gun seems easier, faster, to pick up and use.
If you feel a need for a long gun maybe have a handgun also.

I have used this for "truck gun". Rossi Ranch Hand now with 9 inch barrel chambered in .45 Colt you can shoot hot Colt loads in it and holds 5 plus one in chamber. Easy to reload on the run and built as a pistol so you can carry loaded in vehicle! Made my own holster.

In my neck of the woods, "truck guns" are pretty much a thing of the past. They are 'allowed' by law just the same as when we all carried a rifle and/or shotgun on a rack in the rear window, and a reliable handgun under the seat, but the climate has changed. I have not seen a truck gun displayed for a decade or two. That's when society took a turn in the road and stopped respecting other peoples' stuff, and everything was fair game for theft or vandalism.
In my area a responsible person does not leave a firearm unattended in a vehicle, as most of us would feel bad if it was stolen and used in a crime later to hurt or injure someone. (There are exceptions to that when there is a good way to secure it.) Many of us carry concealed, and the piece stays with us for the most part. Most of us carry for self-protection not looking forward to making use of the weapon, actually with hopes of returning home without making use of it. Making 'long distance' shots are not a concern for most of us who conceal carry, as most of these situations are very close quarters encounters. If you are far away enough to need a rifle, your life is likely not in jeopardy.
Evaluate your needs and reasons for having a weapon with you, as well as the likelihood of having to use it, and purchase accordingly.
For me, it is a handgun of either .38 or .45 caliber, and I am confident that it and I are quite adequately prepared for a nasty situation, using 'avoidance' as the first defense. In over 45 years of carrying, I have encountered one situation as a civilian where my concealed carry weapon actually came in handy..... and with luck, that will be the last.
I wish you good fortune which often has good decisions and forethought as its foundation.

As this JH1951 has said.... I also live in Pennsylvania. The days of carrying a long gun (at least in our area) are gone especially in a displayed state. We can't legally carry a loaded long gun (rifle or shotgun) in a vehicle here in Pa. It doesn't matter if you possess a CCW permit or not. You could carry one unloaded with a box of shells but it's far easier to conceal carry and keep it on your persons at all times. With the new shotguns from Mossberg and Remington being considered "firearms" you could leagally carry one loaded in a vehicle or on persons but then it's starts to become unreasonable if you ask me. Same would go for a AR pistol.

It's far easier to carry a fullsize handgun concealed and still be able to reach out and touch targets. My main concern is to protect my family but will avoid confrontation if possible. A situation with a potential threat say a mugger or such bad guy is one thing. The other situation being a national crisis would be to avoid anything and try to get back home as fast and safe as possible.

I guess it all comes down to your own goals and capabilities and that would come after local and state laws.

This is at the top of my list, although "slow" put a 1-6X on it and make a 100 yard shot

VERY cool !!! I just never keep a vehicle long enough to add a permanent holder.

I haven't seen anything suggested that will reliably penetrate a car door, especially with the window down. A 12 ga. 3" slug would probably be your best bet.

Let me suggest one of the thousands of used .40 S&W pistols that have saturated the market. Many makes and models to choose from with a huge assortment of ammo available.

I like to have a long gun in my rig.

My solution was a 50 dollar Mosin M44 from a police evidence gun sale. I cleaned off the dried gore, gave the stock a coat of finish, shot it, and cable locked it to the rear seat braces. It just bounces along on the floor, chamber empty, mag full, 9 spares on the stock.

I've got a Mossberg 20 gauge Shockwave as my truck gun of the moment. I also keep a Glock 26 handy . . .

A couple days ago in the county next to me about an hour from my house a sheriff was shot and killed by a man who stole a vehicle and a gun. I would never leave a vehicle with a loaded gun in it. There are too many bad people out there that can get their hands on your gun and kill somebody.

My current truck gun is a Glock M-23.....prior to that it was a Ruger Speed-Six which is now my desk gun & favored woods-walker.

Seems you are "conflicted" and paranoid.

Is there a difference between a "truck" gun and a "trunk" gun.

As soon as a gun is put into a truck, does it then become a "truck", gun regardless of what it was originally?

No matter what you chose, the other "guy" will have a bigger, better and more ammo version.

I would suggest a G40 MOS. Glocks are fairly cheap, seem to handle neglect fairly well, a hot 10 should have some reach in the long slide, and a hot, heavy 10 should have better than average penetration. An inexpensive optic will give good 100 yrd accuracy.

I think a 6" 629 would be a good choice too but unless you can find a good shooter that's cosmetically flawed it will cost a good deal more than the 10. Plus, while gaining power you're sacrificing capacity with the 629, but a 6" 629 with hot magnums can be pretty effective at 100 yrds.

I'm not saying those suggestions are perfect truck guns but I was trying to meet your parameters.

An AR locked under the rear seat is a very viable option although there would be the time delay getting it into play.

After spending 40+ years in law enforcement, and working countless crime scenes, I've always wondered why anyone would keep or leave a loaded firearm in their vehicle. Interesting thought......your "throw away truck gun" being stolen from your vehicle and subsequently being used to harm you or your family, neighbor, or police officer.

My truck carries a .357, .44 Mag. and/or .45acp when traveling. I don't generally carry a rifle but it would be the 11.5" Commando SBR with Vortex Spitfire 3x that I'm looking at right now. Has anyone tested hardcast handgun bullets (Buffalo Bore, Garrett, or Underwood)on car doors and windshields?

This! When I started working downtown Atlanta in a real s#arty neighborhood years ago I got a Tuffy console lock made out of 14 gauge steel that bolted thru the floorplate and into a transmission mount. It was an M&P40compact. When my built TJ Wrangler was totaled I got a 10gauge lockbox for my Explorer to keep my CZ "P-01" in when I was in the courthouse or city hall at times I couldn't have it on me. You don't want some crackhead stealing YOUR gun and committing robberies, B&E's, or worse with YOUR gun.

This. If I knew I was going to have a problem I'd carry my M70AB underfolding AK in the truck. It's more compact than my 10.5" barreled AR's and cost 1/3rd the price, and hits a little harder too. But again, this would only be packed in the Explorer IF I knew there was going to be a problem that day. A couple hi-capacity pistols is far better for inside car ingress/egress or firing from the car in a SHTF situation.

Paul Harrel posted an interesting video on the biases against 10mm. I tend to believe that and go with a middle of the road 9mm +P.

The rear bench seat of hubby's Dodge Ram has a great lock box under it that easily holds our long gun cases. Wish I had something like that for my car.

This setup on the prototype police car from Carbon Motors looked ideal. Shotgun and AR.

Smith & Wesson SD9VE, perfect truck pistol, regularly on sale for $259 on the internet. 9mm bonded hollow points does good against doors.

You can put together an AR15 pistol for around $350-$400. A supersonic .300 blk will make swiss cheese of doors. Standard 5.56 does ok with bonded ammo.

Though it would vary by jurisdiction, what do you think of the oft-repeated claim that if you're involved in a self-defense shoot, the police will take away your gun? In all the scenarios I have read about, I have never heard of that happening when it's a justifiable shoot.

I haven't had a "truck gun" in years. I don't think it wise to leave a gun unattended in a vehicle even if the doors are locked. If I'm traveling long distance my CCW handgun goes from IWB holster into the console. For short distance I will leave it holstered when driving.

Anything left in a vehicle is subject to theft. Locking a vehicle helps a good bit. The better secured while left unattended in a vehicle the better. However you might be returning to your car sometime in a secluded parking lot and be desiring quick access, especially a lady.

On the other hand, I can assure you that, at least in Florida, there are many thousands, probably tens of thousands, of guns locked in vehicles throughout the State daily.

It was legal to carry a gun in your vehicle (meeting a few simple requirements) long before the CCW explosion. Older cops, boomers and the like, thought nothing of it and expected it. I remember a Gen X traffic cop that every time he stopped a car with a gun in it he would call out "Signal O" excitedly and generate a rapid back-up. I'm thinking "so what! It's his/her right, just do your job. Is there a problem?"

Yeah, if you leave your gun in your car, make sure it's out of sight and lock the car. But all of those not permit holders that carry in their cars and trucks have to leave them in their cars.

Lets hammer (as in lengthy incarceration) the dirt bags that are pulling the burglaries and reduce the burglary rate, or in these cases what would be an Armed Burglary of a Conveyance. At least that's what it was called. Who knows now?

I was only referring to the inherent danger associated with leaving/storing a loaded firearm in your unattended vehicle....and the civil and possible criminal liability incurred by someone who does this. You can "what if" this practice ad infinitum and at the end, it's still a very, very bad idea......especially when you are placing your own loved ones, neighbors and law enforcement in jeopardy by doing so.

To answer your question, in a "self defense" shooting, police will (or should) take custody of the firearm or firearms used in the incident. This is because the police don't determine whether or not the shooting was justified, the local prosecutor or grand jury will do that. Meanwhile, the firearm will be (should be) processed by a technician and/or firearms examiner for evidence, including forensic processing and test firing.

As opposed to my unattended house? On this point, we will have to agree to disagree. I do agree that one should always follow the local law regarding storage of firearms, which may make those practices we're discussing illegal . . .

Yep.........

Shouldn't have left a gun in your locked car.............it should be at home.

Should not have left it in your locked house if you're not home...... you should have had locked in a safe............

You should have bought a better/bigger/heavier...... safe......................

Hey even bank vaults get broken into................

Like Mark Wahlberg in the "Shooter" movie ..... you should have removed the firing pin before going on a trip!!!!!!

Where is the line drawn?

I understand the need for a long gun in a vehicle if you are a property owner and use it really for critter control.

If you need to shoot someone that is 100 yards away, are they a threat to you? Consider the legal aspect of that shoot.

For me, my handgun will do that I carry daily. I do understand the need for many to be able to secure a gun in their vehicle when needed and they can't carry, but for me it's not something that needs to reside in any of my vehicles when I'm not present.

I am a X-Ray tech at a small rural hospital. My coworkers and I take call at night. Bringing a firearm in the hospital is grounds for termination. My partner at work is a 30 year old female. She is a petite mother of two. She has already had someone try scare her to death at two in the morning trying to get her to pull over. To those of you who believe you should not leave a gun in the car what is your suggestion for her.

In the particular case I used as an example, I do not know if the car was unlocked with keys available or if the car was locked and hot-wired by the thief. I am not entirely opposed to having a firearm left in your unattended vehicle, but I believe that it should be locked up and not easily accessible. Regardless of whether the gun is in a locked compartment or sitting in plain sight, you should not leave your vehicle unlocked wirh the keys in the vehicle. That would be extremely irresponsible in my opinion. If you're going to have a gun in your unattended vehicle, make sure the vehicle is locked.

Taurus Judge or Smith & Wesson Governor.

The Judge was actually designed for the role of a truck gun, clearly inspired by the old Ithaca Auto & Burgler shotgun, which was banned by the NFA because it was a Short-Barrel-Shotgun.

The Judge/Governor is small, reasonably lightweight, can be carried with a variety of ammo, and can be drawn/fired much more easily than any long gun, especially with a car jacker bearing down on you.

12 Gauge shotgun with slugs. Good to 100 yards. Under 400 for a good mossy or Remington riot gun.

If you are shooting someone over 25 yards you better have a god explanation or losing your gun is going to be the least of your worries.

I WOULD CONSIDER A USED MOSSBERG 12 GA PUMP, WHICH ARE READILY AVAILABLE--ALONG WITH A VARIETY OF USED BARRELS--FOR REAL CHEAP MONEY. THESE ARE ROBUST AND RELIABLE GUNS.....

IF YOU ARE WILLING TO SPEND A BIT MORE. YOU CAN PURCHASE A BRAND NEW MOSSBERG MAVERICK 88, 12GA PUMP FOR LESS THAN $200. THIS WEAPON IS VERY VERSATILE. AND IT IS MARKETED AND BILLED AS "AN ALL PURPOSE SHOTGUN".....

I'm not one to say that someone that can't carry at work should not leave their gun in their car, but I think some extra security is warranted. Lot's of people are in this situation and the thieves know that. Just look at how many guns are stolen from cars and that number continues to rise.

This is from a customer that has to leave his gun in his car while at work. He too wants to be armed to and from work and anywhere in between he might be. He bolted his safe in the trunk of his Mustang with tamper proof hardware from McMaster Carr. He unholsters in the car and carries gun in a Bible cover to place it in the safe when he parks. By using a heavy duty lock box and bolting it in the trunk he has reduced the chance of theft significantly from the casual smash and grab in a parking lot.

Lots of options in a truck SUV as there is more room to begin with. Part of his reason to put it in the trunk was no room in the cab for a similar 7GA thick steel box.
