FWIW.... I wouldn't rely on an "intimidating" looking gun to keep you safe.
Nobody is going to be standing around talking like in the movies...."I know you're asking yourself did he fire 5 or 6.... well this is a .44magnum the most...." well you know the rest....
or......like the "bad guy" looking down and seeing the red dot from a laser on his chest and giving up!!!!!

Better off to wear scary looking clothing so you get bypassed in the first place . . .

With movement, in low light, fear, adrenaline, almost nothing will look intimidating. Except...

I've never thought about my carry gun as an intimidation tool to scare of an attacker. If you ever need to pull your gun in self-defense you are in stage #4 of the violent crime. At that point your just trying to survive. Point your gun at someone that's mean-mugging you and the DA will ask you how did you know you were in immediate danger? You had better have a better answer than "he looked at me mean."
The Five Stages of Violent Crime:
1) Intent
2) Interview
3) Positioning
4) Attack
5) Reaction

thanks for any input

Never draw your firearm to scare/intimidate someone and never hesitate using it long enough for the perpetrator to get a good look at what ammunition is in your cylinder
That being said, having most any firearm pointed at you by an unknown party will get your heart pumping.
I can tell you from personal experience that at close range, all muzzles look HUGE
The Browning BXPs have a wicked look to them
The Solid copper hollow points from Barnes look positivly HUGE

If I had to use my firearm for defense, it is unlikely that they will ever see the gun, much less the muzzle.
I am not the police, I don't have to give them a warning. You threaten my family, or myself with immediate harm and there WILL BE NO DISCUSSION.
....ETA...I do find the laser inscriptions on the barrel ends amusing "Smile - Wait for Flash" .....kinda funny, but in no way helpful for a SD/HD situation.

Some will be afraid of any gun pointed at them. Some will not care & want the fight anyway. Your skill level & awareness are far more important.

I've had weapons pointed at me on several occasions. Everything from a .22 to the business end of a 10 gauge shotgun. Even the .22 looked big enough for me to crawl inside of. It ain't about the weapon, it's about the man behind it.

Dwelling on the size of the muzzle and scary looking bullets in a revolver’s chambers as a factor in the defensive use of a gun is a fool’s errand.
Your handgun isn’t a magic wand: imaging that its mere appearance will make bad guys do what you want is a sure path to big trouble for you.

I know everyone was well intentioned with their responses, but I ONLY meant this thread to be a conversation topic NOT a real world application, I would never draw a firearm to scare someone .

There are so many good books on the psychology of self defense.
Regardless of the tool (weapon), it all boils down to the same thing:
Can I convince the bad guy that I will hurt or kill him?
If that requires brandishing, well...that's what you do. No warning shots or other nonsense. You have to make your attacker believe you'll put a bullet in his brain box if he persists. If you can't do that with a hot pink .25 auto, you're not going to suddenly be able to do it with a .44 Magnum snub loaded with flying ashtray JHPs.

Your demeanor during any confrontation will go along way to making it go the way you want. In LE circles it is called command presence. Serious bad guys are not afraid of guns or the dreaded sound of a pump shot gun racking.

ADDITION- I don’t mean for anyone to actual carry a firearm like like this, I just mean big bore chambers , bullets, snubbie pics...

I read a long time ago the first hand account of a deputy and his partner who burst into a home to arrest an individual. That man picked up a revolver off the coffee table and pointed it at the deputy. The deputy saw a .44 magnum. Both deputies shot the perp before he could fire.
The gun turned out to be a .22, not a .44. One’s eyes will magnify danger.
I caught a line drive foul ball at a baseball game. I watched it come off the bat and head up towards me beyond first base on the second deck. It probably travelled a little over 1 second. By the time it was about 10’ from me, it appeared the size of a softball—actually a little bigger. I stuck my bare hand up and snagged it easily in front of my face. Total focus on the danger.
Magnification? Yep. Use it to perform better on your side, but do not count on it from the sending end.

^^^^^I love pictures like Colt’s SAA above but they always make me nervous, even though I know they are taken remotely with tripods, devices to activate the shutter, etc. It’s sort of akin to the snake about to strike picture—it appears you are looking down the muzzle or the fangs (Because you are). It’s like the beginning of Saving Private Ryan—which made me sick to my stomach and dizzy when I saw it first in the theater. All the above is a sign of a great photographer and film maker.

I can tell you from personal experience that a 1911 .45 muzzle at nose length looks like a howitzer.

For most folks, the sight of ANY firearm being pointed at them is enough to make them reconsider what they're doing. For the rest, nothing beats a big bore when you want to stop an attacker, because one way or another, it'll get the job done.

I think that is the gun that Fearless Fosdick was shot with!
With Wadcutters, of course.

I should have said "Do NOT Try This at Home, I am a Professional"
You are absolutely correct. Tripod mounted camera with a radio shutter release.
I am NEVER willingly down range from a loaded firearm.
I think I will start a photography thread in the Lounge. No need to cause thread drift here

Was lucky while in the Air Force for 5 and 1/2 years.. never looked down the barrel of a any type of gun !!
But did see how life threatening stress effects some and it ain't pretty !! But those who think they are about to die will do one of 2 things ..
1. Fight like your life depends on it .. OR
2. crumble in a big heap at the first sign of danger !!
I've seen it happen both ways to people you might think it wouldn't because of them being "well trained" ..and some that take control of the situation you might have thought would have done just the opposite ..

I can't see much advantage that a perp can see the type of round. Kind of like noticing if it is a cobra or a black mamba going to bite you.

If God forbid, I'm ever forced to draw my gun to save my life--so far so good, though it has been dicey a couple of times--it will not be to intimidate an assailant. It will be to very quickly stop the threat to my ancient bacon.
If it has come to that, I see no point in giving an attacker time to observe the bore diameter of my gun, much less check the appearance of the rounds it carries.
I'm old fashioned that way.
