Default Is anyone buying/using full size full weight semi-auto handguns

My full size .40 S&W semi-auto handgun is solid stainless steel and 43 ounces unloaded. A Glock 17 weighs 22 ounces.
I use my 43 ounce beast at the range, where I enjoy how it tames the recoil on .40 S&W. A carry permit is not an option in NJ.

Is anyone else buying/using full size full weight semi-auto handguns.

Yes. I use my SIG P220 as my dedicated home defense pistol and shoot my Beretta M9 to stay proficient as it’s my issued sidearm in the military.

Most all of my firearms purchase, shooting and carrying choices are firearms made of metal. I am not a fan of plastic even though I do own several, none of which will ever be a Glock

This being a Hurricane week I have been carrying my 5" Sig P220 chambered in 10MM Auto.

I have never put it on a scale, but odds are it weights more than 43 ounces

A proper holster and especially belt go a long way toward what is or is not comfortable to carry.

I'm currently using my Beretta 92FS as a home defense gun. I do plan on getting some carry gear for it, but it's not a priority right now as my PX4 Compact and 642-1 serve as carry guns.

My last four purchases have been: Beretta 91s; Sig 229; S&W 3904; and CZ 75B SA.

I like full size guns, but for the range. My carry guns are CS9, 4513TSW, 624 (full size for a J frame?); an Beretta PX4c.

I'm a big hammer fan, and will indulge a bit of plastic for carry purposes (I had the PX4 tuned by Langdon and they did a sweet job).

My last purchase was an officers 1911, .45acp that I am currently looking for a suitable holster for carry.
Also, I have a browning high power that gets shot often and occasionally carried....like TODAY!

Oh, lots of people. Guy in front of me at one shop the other day bought a 1911. I picked up a CHP 4006TSW late last year. I'm considering a 5906 at another dealer (price has not been established yet). But my main focus (for now) continues to be K-frame revolvers and compact 3rd Gen all-metal pistols.

Glock 17 with light is my dedicated nightstand firearm.

(If I were to carry it away from home, I'd take the light off unless I felt it necessary for some reason.)

I used to carry a 5" 1911, I carried a Hi Power for over a decade, before downsizing to a CZ 75 Compact - which is still a comparatively heavy all steel handgun.

I currently carry a 3" S&W 686+ which weighs over 40 oz loaded just because I like revolvers. I also carry an all steel officer model 1911 from time to time which also weighs around 40 ounces loaded.

Either of my 2 1911's are my first choice of "go to" pistols.

I'm hoping to close the deal on a Taurus PT 92 right after the Labor Day holiday.
It's going to be mostly a range gun.

Would a belt slide holster work for one of these?

Call me a dinosaur but I just do not care for all the new striker fired, plastic guns. They just don't do it for me. I carry a J frame. I like shooting my 1911's. I'll probably end up buying 9mm dies for my Dillon progressive, once I'm sure I get along with the PT 92.

I just bought a CZ 75 01 phantom 9mm, it will be carried. My normal edc is a Glock 20. My edc’s have all been full size going back to a 4” model 65 in the 70’s. Only exception to that is my J frames which I carry occasionally. But 90% of the time it is a full size pistol.

I sold my 5” Kimber Custom Classic a couple of years ago as it became too large for me to carry and did not see much range time.

I did keep my Kimber Ultra Carry (Series I) which finds itself placed into my EDC rotation, especially during cold weather months.

No my hefty steel 5906 is to keep and shoot , it's not a high dollar collectable but don't want to mess it up . EDC is Shield 9 , M&P 9FS also have 686 snub if needed. A coworker told his brother was shot during a fight and his SIG has been kept for evidence two years , I'm sure there is more to the story.

I've got a few.

The CZ is a full size slide on a compact frame and the Beretta is a compact slide on a full sized frame...but close enough.

Definitely. In a decent holster, a full-size 1911 or Browning Hi-power carry well for me. A good belt is a must.

Haha, this is like asking me if I still care to eat food or perhaps drink coffee when I wake up. Simplest way to explain my approach to handgunning is that I was an enthusiast long before it even occurred to me that I might ever have the legal ability (or desire) to carry a handgun for defense.

I certainly am a dedicated daily carry kinda guy now, but far more than that, I'm still an enthusiast. In the past 9 months, my newest and favorite fun gun has been a CZ Tactical Sport in .40cal.

This particular pistol is the epitome of a large, full-size, all metal handgun for sure. And it is a modern tack driver and a whole lot of fun.

Ahhhh mea culpa. I read the thread title and the entire opening post but it wasn't until I saw what thread category this is posted in, so ultimately, you were asking who is carrying full-size all metal pistols.

I own a slew of them, I carry none of them.

Carried a 1911 of some configuration exclusively for many years on and off duty. I have also carried a BHP from time to time. Also own a CZ 75B SA recently purchased but don't have a holster for it yet. When I go up on the Grand Mesa I often switch to one of several all steel S&W K or N frames.

It might, but, personally, I don't like belt slide holsters. I prefer a holster with full coverage down the length of the slide/barrel.

I'll be getting an IWB holster for my 92, haven't decided which one yet. I'm leaning towards a Kramer IWB#3, but a VMII-style holster may be more practical.

I don't carry OWB, but if I did I would probably try to find a good pancake holster. An Avenger-style holster may work, but it doesn't conceal as well, generally speaking.

With a big gun like the 92, whether Beretta or Taurus, the grip is going to be difficult to conceal, so I would recommend finding a holster that will pull the butt of the gun into your body.

I also have a preference for holsters that stay open after drawing the gun. I think it makes holstering easier and safer.

As always, just my opinion. You'll probably have to experiment to figure out what will work for you.

Bought a Colt commercial 1911 from the late 20s and shot 500 rounds through it last week. That count?

Don't own a plastic frame gun, have no desire to. Everything I carry is a full size K or N frame revolver or big frame auto loader.

I much prefer steel frame guns.

I usually pocket carry a snubbie, but when I leave the house I always carry a full size metal gun on my belt. My main carry guns for the last couple of years have been a 4" S&W M29 and a Browning Hi Power.

I also have a Beretta 92FS and a 1911 Commander that get carried from time to time, and my bedside gun is a SIG P226.

My full size M&P 9mm with an RMR weighs 30 oz with an unloaded mag. Adding 17+1 rounds of 115 grn HP ammo brings the carrying weight up to ~37 oz.

That may not be quite as heavy as some of the all steel guns mentioned here, but it is not a lightweight. It shoots well, is reliable, and carries just fine AIWB in a JM Kydex holster on a Wilderness stiffened nylon belt. The belt is infinitely adjustable with its Velcro closure, so it it is very quick and easy to dial in a minor adjustment for comfort. I carry this rig 90% of the time, switching to something smaller for specific occasions.

Adding a spare 21-round extended mag and knife to the belt load works fine. Takes some commitment, proper equipment, and getting comfortable with it, but it is very comforting.

Big guns rule. Carry them. I have others, all steel, revolvers and semis. Love them all, better than small guns.

I recently purchased a CZ Shadow2. It is the heaviest handgun I own.
Usually carry a a lightweight J frame in my pocket. This week I will have on my belt an all steel Kobra Carry 45 acp as I expect we will have problems because of Dorian..

I shoot Bullseye: 1911 in 45 ACP, 1911 in 38 Super and S&W 41.

Bought 2 plastic 40's over time. First a Ruger SR40. Didn't like it much at all. Didn't learn and then bought an H&K 40. Nice gun but I can't hit the broadside of a barn with it - from inside. So, I finally learned. If at first you don't succeed, then don't buy another plastic 40.

Smaller, lighter guns are definitely easier to carry and conceal, but I believe that with some forethought, and maybe a wardrobe adjustment, most people can effectively conceal a larger carry gun than they think they can. It's largely a matter of how much effort and committment one is willing to make.

Just my opinion.

"Is anyone else buying/using full size full weight semi-auto handguns."

Yes.

But I bet with the lower weight and cost, and LE use of polymer guns, all-metal handguns are a small minority of current sales.

I'll use whatever gun I can use best to protect myself and family. If that means using a full size 1911, then so be it.

My safe houses several nice Heavyweights and Cruiserweights.

My nightstand gun is a Middleweight.

My CC gun is a Bantamweight.

While not full size, I have a S&W 1911SC Commander, S&W 4516ND, Sig P229 and a P239 in my semi-auto carry rotation. Nothing plastic for me.

I prefer all steel as well. I have a custom built 45acp built on a Springfield carbon steel frame and slide, Springfield stainless 5” RO with target sights, Kimber 5” Eclipse Target stainless in 38 super and CZ75 (pre B) 9mm. Not full size but have a Kimber TLE Pro 45acp that’s all carbon steel.

No question the additional weight helps tame recoil. I’m also huge fan of good aggressive texture on grips and sharp checkering on the front strap and mainspring housing.

Have and very much enjoy shooting a RIA 1911-A1 and a Sig P-226 Legion. These where not bought for and are not intended for CC. They are what I enjoy at the range and when out and about in the woods/fields. For concealed carry I think something more easily concealed would be in order ... maybe like a six inch 28-2 or a five inch 625-2. :-). Sincerely. bruce.

Sure. I have a few, including 4 1911s and a few K-frames and 3rd gen semis like a 4516 and a 5906. I take them to the range, especially when we have guests in town, for them to have a little fun. Realistically, as bad as my lower back is, I'll seldom if ever carry any of them. But at least I got to tote stuff like them around in the blue suit for many years, so I darn sure don't feel like I'm missing anything!

I carry a 4566. Does that count? I also carry a 6906 or Glock 30. I have no problem switching between make, model, or caliber of handguns. Metal, plastic--nothing to whine about.

Just picked up a Sig P226 Legion today in 9mm SAO. I’ve shot my son’s extensively and after 100 rounds thru mine today, I’m in love. Smooth as silk.

Silly question? The only Tupperware I have is in the kitchen where it belongs. My most recent carry purchase (not most recent actually) in my rotation.
Colt Lightweight Enhanced Officers 45acp.

Suit and tie, sport coat, H&K P 7, (PSP Model). With jeans or slacks, S&W 640, 38 Special , Walther PPK , Seecamp, both 32acp. For range fun, Walther HP, P4, or P38, all 9mm para. Also for fun and the trip to the farm,
Colt SAA's 45Colt caliber, 4 3/4 and 7 1/2 inch barrels. Just ordered the 1895 John Wesley Harden shoulder holster for the 4 3/4 Colt from El Paso Saddlery. I have no idea of how large it is going to be. Probably will need to be under the dead of winter coat. Farm revolver any way.
All steel and wood, no plastic except the stocks/grips on the P4 and the Seecamp.
