Default Active Shooter Course

So last evening our local Sheriff's office . Put on a hour and half course on active shooter course at our local coumiuity center. It was free to public. Good info for sure. Run , Hide, Fight . Basic stuff. One good question answered by sheriff's officer. A citizen asked him do you want a concealed carry person to re holster their weapon if they have engaged an active shooter. Sheriff's officer said yes it would be best to reholster prior to officers getting on scene.

Definitely reholster if the threat is neutralized or otherwise no longer a threat. The LEOs are going to show up to an unknown environment and will assume everyone holding a gun is a bad guy until they determine differently.

I went to one put on by local law enforcement two years ago. The tactics are pretty much the same, run, hide, fight back. Do NOT play dead. The officer said that pretty much anyone will be treated as a suspect until they get things sorted out. This may even mean being cuffed and detained. The don't know what they are getting into and need to be as careful and thorough as possible. I was surprised to hear him repeat the old joke about "when seconds matter, the police are only minutes away".

The citizen who needs to ask if he should be holding a gun in his hand when the cops arrive on an active shooter scene worries me a bit.

What? They did not teach you to grab the nearest fire extinguisher and use it to create a smoke screen? Then maybe try to use it to bat the weapon out of the shooter's hand? How about pelting him with canned food? Yes, these things have been recommended by some law enforcement agencies.

Not a course but I had a nice talk with our sheriff. He is pro gun and practical!

I specifically asked him about carrying a gun and being in the middle of a seriously big problem incident. Never have a gun in your hand when the officers arrive. The chances are a bunch of people will yell to the cops "THAT MAN HAS A GUN" if they saw it. Weather they see it or not best bet you will be tackled and brought to the floor then disarmed and cuffed.

Even if no one spotted your gun. Perhaps you did not draw it, if the cops even suspect your carrying you will get their undivided attention. If so far all good the odds are all will be escorted out and checked before being declared non combatants.

As far as trying to tell the arriving cops you are in possession of a legal gun, he told me every incident is different, same with the responding officers, do what you think is the best under the circumstances. I asked him what would you do. Quote "I would be holding my badge high over my head till cleared.''

making tracks sounds like a better idea but this is better than standing around pulling your tail waiting to be shot.

Yeah, I think Charles Bronson did that in one of the Death Wish movies. When you miss, it’s about the same as jumping up and down and yelling “shoot me shoot me”!

In a fight one should never rely on one action. The first shot, strike, effort at hurting the opponent should be the beginning of a series of actions stopped only when one wins, or loses. Think two-three moves ahead and keep attacking. Such aggressive action should inspire others to join in, but someone has to start doing something.

I have hide pray die training at work tomorrow. The Hr director doesn’t want to hear about training the management team to repel boarders. I guess I could throw the Michele Obama book she has on her desk at the bad guy.

If you can put the weapon away or down somewhere visible, if you need to stay armed to cover the offender (and when law enforcement arrives) do what you are commanded to do. If the weapon is still in your hand when they arrive try to take a non shooting grip on the gun, hold it away from your body and do as instructed. They will probably want to remove it from your hand. Identify your self when possible and tell them you have a carry permit. The important thing is control your emotions and listen.

I disagree. If you remain standing with a gun in your hand expecting cops will walk up to you and either take it away or order you to do something with it you are very ignorant of appropriate police reactions when bodies are laying around.

You don’t “cover” him and wait for backup. That’s not the citizen’s role.

If you go after an active killer, you kill him.

This is continuing murder. You have no idea whether one, or two or three pistol rounds from your concealed gun is going to be effective. There may be a second or third perp. This is not shoot to wound or disable. This is shoot to kill and you are totally justified in doing so. He might have an explosive vest. He might have a bullet proof vest. This is the end game for him or you. Work fast, finish fast.

Yes, the head shot is the fight stopper.

It should be over quickly. Holster your gun and cover it. Secure the perp’s weapon but don’t pick it up.

When the Blue arrive, you don’t have to wait for their instructions. Kneel facing away and cross your ankles, fingers interlocked behind your head. Then follow instructions, if you can understand what you are being told by multiple people screaming different things at you while pointing loaded guns at you. Don’t move. Don’t talk. They won’t believe you if you tell them you’re the good guy or have a license to carry. It won’t matter in the moment.

You will be cuffed but not shot.

Very unhealthy to be holding a gun and wearing civilian clothes when a cop arrives on a reported active shooting scene and he sees you holding a gun.

I’ve taken out a few folks with Bushs Baked Beans. Usually about an hour after I’ve eaten a batch. Yummy. But stand back....

I can take out an entire platoon with Taco Bell's refried bean burritos. I am banned from all Taco Bell locations, seems the U.N. has a thing against chemical warfare and weapons of mass disgust.

I've gone through 2 ALICE training courses.........

Don't get caught with a gun in your hand or pointing it at someone..... the assumption will be that "you" are the active shooter about to shoot one more victim....... and most likely will be shot to stop you from firing.

The flip side is these shooters often work in pairs. Last year, in a take down drill, I disarmed the active shooter.... and came up with his "red gun" as another instructor walked though the door.... (3-4 seconds tops)..... he wasn't in uniform and had a red gun so I shot him .......... turns out he was not part of that drill and was coming back to join in the next drill..........

Yes an "assumption" that will haunt the officer for life and most likely get you killed...... well beyond the usual of ....." Making a a-- out of u and me!"
