Poll - Knife or edged tool/weapons
I know many folks carry a knife, some carry more than one, and some carry tools with edges (Leatherman, ect).
Do you carry for defense, utility, status, or other? Do you carry more than one at a time?
I'll start - I carry one, usually a Benchmade that my lovely wife bought me for my birthday a number of years ago. Mostly, it is a tool. It gets to strip wire, open packages, cut twine on hay bales, and loads of really boring uses. It is not abused, but gets a lot of use in some not kind environments.
Other times, I carry a fine Italian switchblade that my dad gave me. It gets little hard work, but stands ready for any required.
And some other times - I have a smaller knife that goes in dress clothes rather well. It stands ready for any deed, but since I refrain from feeding hay, or wiring trailers in my suit and tie, it gets light duty mostly.
I did put a category for folks that carry a knife as a status symbol. I see guys from time to time with several grand in a knife that has never seen anything other than kid gloves.
I was taught how to use an edged weapon for defense, for weapon retention, and for lifesaving purposes. Mostly mine see utility work, I have cut a lot of seat belt webbing in the course of my FD duties.
What do you carry, and why?

Carry a Wharncliffe'd Delica everyday as a tool. It's very rare for me to go more than a day or two without using it to cut something, whether it's opening letters, packages, or sometimes cutting food.
I also have a multitool handy, including a small one on my keychain and a larger one in my backpack. Neither have knife blades, unless you count the scissors as edged tools.

I carried a knife for longer than I can remember until I retired and am now living in Ohio. While in uniform I carried a 3.5” quick open knife and for the last maybe 6 years in uniform I carried a Ka-Bar TDI knife (shortly after they came out) at 10-11 o’clock on my pants belt under my duty rig. I had CQC knife training etc. also.
Ohio has some ridicules knife laws. I can carry a gun without issue (have license), but Not a knife.
Living in the suburbs near a large city, it seems that there are a lot of younger Police Officers that are a little too spirited for me. JMO
Don’t want The hassle of getting arrested because of archaic laws!
Nice pics SAFireman!!!

I’ve been carrying a Kershaw Blur every day for the last twelve years, various other knives before that. Never needed it as a weapon, but it’s been a useful tool many times.

Always have a Buck 550 in my pocket.
The Buck 110 in the back pocket sometimes.
Going on Jury duty in a few weeks and can't have anything that they consider a weapon.....

I’ve been trained to have and use a fixed blade for defense. The likelihood of getting a folding knife out of hiding, locked open and in the fight is low compared to the speed and stoutness of a fixed blade.
If you’re hiding a gun on your belt, you can hide a fixed blade knife. Ideally it should be available for either hand and can be the real “get off me” tool when the gun may not be. Mine almost never comes out of its sheath.
My utility knife is a quick open folder used multiple times a day and dress sharpened often. It can work as a backup.

YES! very day every where. Schrade 34OT. It's for cutting apples, grain sacks, bailing twine, scraping battery terminals, etc. It's not for slaying dragons or rescuing damsels in distress, or even back up to my firearm.

I carry a Victorinox Pioneer everywhere I go it's a knife and a tool really all I need. Many times I also carry a Case 6318 Stockman mainly because I like them.

No, you do not want to do that. They “lost” my Dads pocket knife that I put in an envelope when entering the courthouse. Security held it and returned a piece of junk to me when I left. When told that one wasn’t mine, they just shrugged and handed me the junk.
Sour taste in my mouth ever since.

For many years I carried a Swiss army. As a construction worker it came in handy many times and also for a quick car fix. When the Leatherman came out I went with them. Now I normally do not carry a "work knife" with me, I do have a Leatherman in my vechicles.
As far as carrying a "weapon" on occasion due to circumstances I will have a decent folder on me.
During the serious unpleasantness of the late 60s I did not have a Pistol Permit and being our shop was in the bad part of the city most times I carried both a Bowie on my belt and a folder in my pocket

A Leatherman multi-tool has been a companion for the past 25 years or so, now residing in my truck console. It sees use pretty frequently.
Just a few months ago I purchased a Boker 'Magnum' automatic with 3.5" clip-point blade. Perfectly legal here in Colorado now, but prior to a 4-state car trip last fall I researched state and local laws for those areas and learned that this knife is a definite "NO NO" in many other places. It seems worth mentioning to those who regularly carry a knife that the laws are all over the place around the country, and what won't even raise an eyebrow around your home could result in serious legal jeopardy while travelling.
Prior to the Boker I carried a Gerber SLG folding liner-lock with thumstud, 3.25" blade, for about 15 years. Very handy knife around the shop and on job sites. (Repeat above cautions for those who may be travelling; some states limit pocket knives to 3" or shorter blades).
About 35 years ago I purchased a Buck 'Squire' lock-back folder, 2.75" clip-point blade. It is true what they say about Buck knives, they will sure take and hold an edge! This remains the knife I carry when travelling for its slim profile and lack of either longer blade, or thumb stud, or automatic function; probably the least likely to raise legal issues (although I have read that some states and cities have restrictions on blades of this length, as well as locking blades or other features).
I hope that my point has been made regarding the need to research state and local laws for those areas you plan on spending any time. A good knife is easy to carry, but bail bondsmen and defense lawyers are much bulkier and more expensive.

I've carried a pocket knife since I was about 8, maybe 10 years old. Its an all purpose tool that might be used for anything. Handier than a shirt pocket and I feel plumb naked without it.
I suppose it could be used for self defense if I had to. But to be honest, I'd probably be more dangerous to myself than the BG.

If not travelling, I carry a SAK and usually some sort of Spyderco product. Which Spydie depends on my mood and where I am going. Today its a Spyderco Chinook. My wife likes this knife because when we are around pinkos, she cuts her food up with it and giggles when the pinkos about hemorage green paint.
My father got really pissed if I did not have pocket knife with me so I feel partially dressed if I don't have one on me. My wife and I fly a good bit so I feel partially dressed a good bit.

I carry a knife every day, for general use. I have two (a Kershaw and a CRKT Drifter), and I just carry the one I happen to grab when I walk out the door in the AM.

Carried a Gerber multi-tool on my duty belt until I retired. Nowadays, I keep a cheap folder with a serrated edge in my barn coat for cutting twine and other chores. A trusty SAK is a daily pocket carry.

Just wanted to add that the laws can be all over the place WITHIN a state, between counties, or even cities within a county. Not to mention other possible restrictions at places like parks or private businesses.

I carry a Boker Auto AK-74 and a Leatherman Squirt tool every day while in my old jurisdiction where I still live. If I go out of the area I carry a larger Leatherman but no other knife. NC does not have a CCW permit for a knife but lists knives among the items that violate CCW laws in some circumstances. As a practical matter, most arrests are at schools or when the knife is brandished or used as a weapon. Like SF Fireman, I have cut a lot of seat belts in my career.
When I was in high school in the 1960s, most males carried a pocket knife at my school. I can remember lots of fights but not a one where some one pulled a knife.

I carry a 2.9" Benchmade NorthFork folder....... with wood scales almost every day. IMHO a very non-tacticool looking knife.
Weekends I might switch out the Benchmade for a Kershaw 3.4" "Blur"... if I expect "rougher" work.
For self-defense; I try never to bring a knife to a gunfight........
But I do have either a 5" short Ka-bar or Ka-bar Mk1 Deck knife in each vehicles "kit bag". But again I view them as utility knives........ that as a last resort could be used in self defense.

Do I carry a knife? Is the atomic weight of cobalt 58.9? You bet your bobsled I carry a knife!! I've carried one practically everyday since my grandpa gave me my first pocket knife when I was six years old.
And, I don't think a day goes by when I don't use it besides. Everything from cutting hay bales to opening grain sacks to opening the mail to cutting some string for Miss Judy...and the list goes on.
This one finds its way into the left front pocket of my Wranglers a good bit of the time. I've posted this picture before. It was made around 1920 by Schrade and called the Schrade "handy knife." We'd call it a switch blade.

The smaller one had a 3 inch blade like the larger one 8 years ago, now carry the lager one but it is getting shorter all the time. I like the larger handle for ease of retrieval from the scabbard. When going far from my shop I carry a larger one.

Here are a few I have with with me in the Philippines, the rest are at home in the USA. I carry them all, just depends on my mood, but the ZT200 probably sees the most day to day use and the Blur travels with when working/traveling in other countries, because it’s the lightest and cheapest in case it gets lost or confiscated.
KRUDO - Discipline
KRUDO - Feroc
ZT - 0801 Titanium
ZT - 0200
Kershaw - Blur
Like guns, I am always looking for a new knife.

I voted "Yes, more than one, each has it's own purpose" because - just like with a gun - it depends on where I'm going.
I always have a folder in my pocket but there's more/bigger knives in the vehicle. And if I go into the woods I'll carry a bigger knife.

Like so many gun people, I have a plethora of edged weapons and tools, too. As EDC knives go, I never leave home without my Swiss Army knife, and generally I have one of these "tactical" knives with me. Mostly the switchblade but not always. I have a Christy sliding blade knife on my vehicle key chains, too. So that's three.
I was carrying this switchblade for a long while but I misplaced it. So I switched to another one (no pun intended) but I don't seem to have a picture of it presently.

I really like this one - it doesn't LOOK tactical.......

My EDC knife is strictly utility, a SAK of one model or another since the early 70's. These days it's an Evo 11.
