Default Hunting with 360 Airweight

My wife and I were walking through our woods when we were confronted by a huge furry creature of the woods from a distance of about 10 yards. I normally carry my mini-14 with me for instances such as this. The only thing I had with was my 360 Airweight, the creature was dispatched quickly and the little pistol amazes me at how accurate it can be. The groundhog did make the perfect target as he stood on his hind feet and for about a minute trying to figure out whether we were friend or foe. He took about 10 seconds too long LOL

I have dispatched 3 ground hogs in my back yard at a distance of 12 yards with a pre charged. 22cal pellet rifle. All were one shot, clean kills. I do live in a subdivision so a powder burner of any caliber is a no, no.

One reason is that they dig under the foundations of my farm buildings. When my granddad was farming I cannot tell you how many cows were put down because of broken legs from cows stepping or falling into a groundhog hole. Just last year I had 30 feet of bank of a creek that runs through our property wash out and it cost the local county over $30k to repair the damage and replace a drain tile becuase groundhog holes had weakend the bank.

He described a groundhog as a "huge furry creature", clearly the size of the thing had him fearing for his life. Definitely the first time I've ever heard or seen of a groundhog being described as a huge creature.

In all seriousness, I have a raccoon problem. They are destructive, so I put them on ice. Problem solved. So, I really do get it.

LOL on the large furry creature. I killed one last week with my mini-14 and the body alone was almost as long as the barrel (18.5")

We used to keep 60 + chickens for eggs and meat and the coon got to killing chickens all time so I'd live trap them them kill them. One of our neighbor ladies heard what I was doing and thought that it was horrendous killing the pretty little things until her pigeons started dying off. She used a game camera to see what it was then low n behold after she saw the culprits she changed her attitude toward the raccoon. I won't bother them as long as they away from the buildings and house but once they show up on our cameras regularly they are taken care of quickly.

Country life is great but some of the critters can be devastating to livestock and stored goods.

I wish you guys would take a few dozen groundhogs alive and send them down to us. The coyotes put a hurt’n on them almost to extinction. We shot several hundred a year out of same fields and never dented them. We need seed stock. A lot of animals depend on groundhog holes for their own dens.
I think if Ghogs come back the rabbits will follow. It’s hard to tell because the Coyotes either are up the small animals or ate them out.

Another one taken this afternoon with the 360 Airweight. I was mowing the back yard and saw him running out of the garden. This 360 is quickly becoming my favorite carry gun, light, easy to carry and is more accurate than I'll ever be.

I saw a buddies favorite horse break it's leg in a chuck hole... it was a terrible shame. It was also my favorite horse for him to ride because his and mine must have had a crush on each other... we could ride all day and barely touch the reins because the horses naturally kept pace.
I had a w-chuck (ground hog) that kept digging holes my my pasture and had learned to stay out of 22 range. One day I saw him run into some tall grass to hide... it didn't work. Like my gramps, I always kept a couple of break action shotguns handy (one in my shop, another in the barn). Problem solved.

Groundhog eradication in leased pastures used to keep me busy. The pests can grow to surprising size too. While an average adult is probably around 20-25 lbs, I nearly overlooked one one evening as it was down in a little valley just in front me. The size was shocking. It fell back in the rather large hole (I thought I missed it and was shocked considering I'd been successful on others at longer range earlier. Waited around and then finally decided to check the hole.) and I was sure it was dead but wasn't gonna drag it out for pictures. When they get a bit of age on them they can be quite evasive.

Down here in SE AZ, we have javelina. Our front yard is a javelina highway. When I take my dog out at night, we've had a couple of encounters with them, been charged by a couple of them once. Now I take a LCR in .22, loaded with Stingers.
One night a group ran across the drive in front of us, one turned and came at us. I had the chance to get off one shot, he turned and went into the brush. Next day I found him dead in the brush. He was a male, about 40 lbs with good size tusks. Nasty critters.

I think you must be one helluva shot to — while mowing, no less! — shoot a groundhog on the fly with a snubby...

Well done!

I will say that the shot was a blessing and nothing more. The little gun points naturally and I was surprised that I hit it.

My vote goes to raccoons. If they’re within 100-feet of anywhere, kill them.

That’s good shooting with the little 360. I don’t like to kill stuff I don’t eat but can understand the need to do away with burrowing animals when buildings and livestock are at risk.

Ground hogs are terrible for cattle. Back about 20 years ago lived in mnts of Va., friend had a farm we turned into a hunt club. Neighbor had cows and had ghog problem. Friend and I had .17’s which worked well on ghogs. We cleaned them out, real pests. Great shooting with a snubby!

We didn't have Ground hogs we had Badgers. they would do the same thing dig big holes under the barns or in the pasture. They had to go!!!!

For those who asked why he shot it, you're showing your city cousin side.

My wife and I hunted "woodchuck" for years. Every year, a farmer buddy would call and ask us to come up. One year, he leased out a very small patch of land to a guy who grew "organic" stuff for local restaurants that were catering to 'special folk' up from the city for weekends. Within a matter of weeks, the 'new guy' approached us and asked WHY were we needlessly killing those creatures. Rather than explain something to a liberal, we just never went back there. I figured my buddy could either help him understand, throw him off the land, or fight the mighty woodchuck himself. I apologized to my friend and went elsewhere where there were no liberals in the immediate area. p.s. those places are rapidly disappearing. p.p.s. Nice shooting with that Airweight.

IMHO as always,
J
