Default Rethinking your carry choice in light of the riots.

In light of the widespread riots, and the resulting retreat of law enforcement, how many have rethought your weapon of choice for concealed carry? Has ammo capacity become more important to you? How many, on the other hand, have been more resolved in carrying a revolver, for reliability?

A couple of years ago, I decided that it was better to have more ammo and not need it than to need it and not have it. I was carrying a Shield. I just sold it and purchased a Sig P365XL, strictly for reasons of ergonomics. But having a 12+1 capacity is an added bonus. For the record, I do not believe that having extra capacity predesposes one to "spray and pray" defense tactics. Semi or revolver, it is still important to hit your target.

I haven’t changed my habits regarding my carry preference but I have changed where I’ll do business and socialize. I’ll not be visiting Portland or Seattle any time soon.
It has little real impact in my immediate area.

2 years ago, I sold my carry 1911 and got a M&P9.

Last fall I sold my Shield and got a 365.

Also I retired the car shotgun and got a Sub 2000 for the car.

All to increase ammo capacity.

Not really. A couple of years ago I switched my EDC from a 642 to a PX4 Compact, but capacity was probably down at the bottom of my list of reasons for doing so. I also carry my 642 as a BUG.

However, there are still times when I only carry my 642 when I want a little more discretion, or sometimes even no gun if there are restrictions in places where I have to go.

The thing is, from what I've seen, including past events, riots are not likely to spontaneously happen out of nowhere. There's going to be something going on beforehand, like protests. Part of "situational awareness" includes checking your local news to see where events like these are happening. That way, you can avoid them if at all possible.

The city I live in has had some pretty bad rioting and looting. But for the most part they happen at night in areas with protests, and it's not hard to check the news to see where those protests are taking place. I avoid those times and places when I have to go out and about, and so far I've not run into anything even close to these situations (*knocks on wood*).

If you think about it, if you're in a riot situation, and you have to fire in self defense, you face the possibility of becoming overwhelmed regardless of how many rounds your gun carries. Awareness and avoidance skills are going to be more important than whether your gun carries 5 or 15 rounds.

But I certainly have no problem if someone decides they need to carry "more" than usual in these uncertain times. Everybody has their own wants, needs, and levels of comfort (or acceptable discomfort, as the case may be).

Just my opinion.

You start shooting folks scatter...your best weapon during lawless riots is the 3500lbs car... you have to run em over till you can leave the area.

Nothing has changed. I still carry a 7+1 or 8+1 pistol with an extra mag.
I food shop once a week at 7am and gas up the SUV weekly also.
Don’t go out after dark if I can help it and stay away from the city and any
bad areas near me. Being retired makes a big difference in that I can go where I want when I want.

Haven't much rethought my primary carry(G19W/19x back up mag) (5 adtional pistol mags in the truck) so much as I've added an AR pistol to the truck... don't wanna get caught with my pants down 10 "rifle" mags in the kit....

No, not anticipating changing what I carry. Especially after watching the guy that shot the protester in New Mexico.
These people are cowards. All it took was a couple of shots bringing down one of their buddies and they scrambled like rats from a sinking ship.
Confident that my Model 66 2 1/2” is up to the task.

A friend was carrying a P365, but moved that to backup role and has started carrying a P320X compact for round count.

I haven’t changed my carry setup, but may adjust my HD thinking a bit.

Thumbs up carry change

the recent riots have not changed my carry habits . pain in shooting practice has changed what I carry . that and my relatively new love Smith & Wesson revolvers has effected what I carry . used to carry 1911s and small 44 specials .now I carry either .38 special or 357 mag usually both with required speed loaders. what did change my carrying habits was the San Bernardino terrorist attack . was publish that they had plans to catch the next traffic jam and go from car to car shooting people . I now keep an old Winchester 30-30 in my truck and bring an AR with extra mags with me when I have my family along .note on inside door of home . ISIS so as not to forget.kenny

Nope. Not me.

I live a short 20 miles from the occupied zone. And there have been quiet protests here as well.

I don’t go where I’m not wanted. I’m good with that.

No change in firearms but did add a few smoke grenades. Intent of smoke is to add more options in case of a road blockade situation where you get trapped in. That and a fire extinguisher.

I’m with Kanewpadle. This stuff is easy enough to avoid, and that’s the best practice. Having said that, a time when the possibility of using your SD firearm increases, is not the time to make a change. Carry more ammo maybe, but don’t change guns.

They’re getting hard to find affordable, but a Detective Special or a model 60 or anything with a steel frame and shooting .38s would help in the recoil dept.

I haven't changed my EDC, either. I've been carrying my Glock 20 in 10mm, plus spare 15 round mag, for many years now. I've also been carrying a Kel-Tec P32 + spare mag in a pocket holster as my BUG.

However...I have been debating on keeping a long gun nearby while I'm in my house. Nothing too excessive has been happening here in Phoenix as of yet, so I haven't gone to that yet...but if/when violent protests become more rampant here, that will likely be my next step.

No changes to what I carry, which is a hefty S&W 5906 (15+1). But if I was traveling in an area of street protests, I'd made sure I'm driving my truck instead of my small commuter car, in case if I have to keep rolling.

ContinentalOp is right. Riots don't pop up instantly. What does is mass shootings and multiple crook robberies, and for that you need lots of ammo.

I started bringing my shockwave with me in the car when I have to drive out of town. It sits on the front seat under a cover. I don't take it when I am doing something local and have to leave the car. Nothing happens in my small town and I always have my Glock with me.

I spend a lot of time in Kelso - was just there. Would never know this **** is going on. I haven’t changed my EDC practices. Like others I stay away from the hot spots, which are actually made to look much larger/worse by the media.

Last week I was required to go to Portland. Thankfully, I didn't have to drive through downtown, or the I-5 bridge near Vancouver. The day I went they (the protesters) had traffic on the bridge stopped. I chose my route carefully, and was in and out in less than a half-hour. I carried my 4006 with a spare magazine, had my Colt DS on the seat next to me under my jacket, and my BHP in my day pack just in case. A little overboard, perhaps, but I'm okay with that. I considered taking my AR!

Around here, most of the time it's my DS.

Nope, I'm still carrying the exact same thing that I've been carry since last October, a SW40VE with an LCP as backup.

The only change which has occurred since the riots began was to avoid the areas where protests/riots are happening or otherwise could happen.

I avoid places where there were riots. They tend to be places with lots of covid and that's another reason to stay away from big cities.

Still carry my j frame, but added a second reload.

Getting caught in a riot, even when armed, is a lose-lose situation it's best to avoid.

Wrong turns are certainly possible & who knows what nut job group is where at any given time. Nothing really changes for me. Same g26, spare mag. It will get me out of most situations.

No change here. Still a revolver and a speed loader in the pocket.

Like a few who posted above, I avoid crowded areas or places I can't carry. I always have other than when I was on the job.

As an LEO, I had to use only the force necessary in violent encounters and nothing more. That's good advice for civilians too so a can of pepper spray is a wise purchase and a possible way (if the circumstances permit) to avoid defending yourself on a manslaughter charge. Know the difference between deadly force and necessary force for self-defense as you'll have to articulate it in depth if you end up needing the final option.

... and for the OP’s question: Nah. Still keeping my CZ 75D PCR on me. (14+1 flush fit mag, and 15 round spare) See no reason to change. 30 rounds is plenty AFAIC.

I'm on the same sine wave as always - capacity vs reliability. I've been in a capacity phase and carrying my Hi Power or 1911, but I feel myself slipping toward reliability and foresee my 3" M629 logging some belt time in the near future.

In my "Burb of the Burgh" my 3913 (7+1) with flush fit mag and 2 spare 8round mags are plenty to get me out of any situation.

Staying out of the Burgh or Oakland, the College area of town........

traveling...... I switch to my 6915 or lately my Beretta 92 Compact with Mec-gar new 15rd flush fit mag. and 18 round spare(s). The 16" Mini-14 with 10 and 20rd mags travels with me to and from the lake.

Good question otis24!
I'm staying with my 45 1911 Commander, I did start carrying an extra mag in the truck.
Not to worried about riots but times they are changing .............. for the worse.
Glad I'm an old fart.

I agree, I had to drive right through Columbus for work 4 times in the last 10 days. I have the option of when I do my work, So I get up at 0430 and am home in 2.5 hours usually. Plus the rain, you just don't see many protesters! The patrolmen in the area on late 3rd shift and early 1st shifts are used to me, and haven't approached me it 2 years. They might patrol by because of a phone call, but when they see me, they wave and return to the routine!

I still carry my S&W 49 and a 8 round speed strip. That and any running vehicle, should keep me out of trouble!

I have definitely reshaped my thinking. But I did it over a year ago when I bought a Taurus PT92. I'm close enough to St Louis to be aware of what can happen when mob mentality takes over.
I don't carry the Taurus. Not yet. But I have it incase social unrest comes to my neighborhood.
During the Michael Brown unrest I barely missed getting stranded on Highway 270 when a crowd of protesters/rioters where coming down the embankment, just prior to shutting down the expressway. I could see the crowd coming down the hillside as I drove past. I just made it out of there.

I'm in Minneapolis about 10 miles from the action... I just don't go down there. It worked when the I-35 bridge fell down, works now!

I’m already about at the limit of stamina for carrying stuff to maintain my security; however I am considering putting stuff in my trunk that I have been leaving behind: my tennis bag for example, but not my gig bag, at least not yet.

Regards, Porkie

How can you get more reliable with capacity than a Hi Power ??

I have to admit. For the past few years I have been spouting off about how all I need is my Two J-Frames and that is all I carry and shoot. Well, after how I have seen all this **** going on, the Glock 26 has been dusted off, practiced with, and accompanied me on several outings.

Fair question. For years I've routinely carried/used revolvers. Still do. A few years back, I bought a Sig P-226 Legion in 9mm. Probably will add a couple more magazines. Three are not quite enough for 100 rds. Will need to also add suspenders to hold up the belt on which I will carry the magazines, knife, light, spare batteries, medical kit, Hostess Twinkie's, spare car keys, mad money, credit cards, gold coins, etc., etc. Seriously ... since Moses crossed the Red Sea, I have always kept a good pistol within reach whether at home, in the car or at the office (brief case is more than a mere lunch box!). I pay attention to situation/people and practice appropriate social distancing technique when dealing with folks who are cranked up, on the prod, acting all big and bad, whatever. Sincerely. bruce. (The preceding was brought to you by having slept all night and having had two 20 oz. mugs of Death Wish Coffee :-) . Sincerely. bruce.

It didn't change what I carry but I'll admit to loading up my rifle. I don't usually keep a rifle loaded at home but it seemed prudent.

Not really much change. We live in rural western slope Colorado. What I have noticed as of late is that there are a lot more folks out wandering around, camping, fishing, hiking and the like with in what appears to be an effort to just get out after the lock down. We are going camping over night for the first trip of the year and will take appropriate measures to ensure our safety while out in the toolies.

I've swapped out the 940 for the 66-4 for my weekly trips to Crazytown. 1 speedloader.

When there was active rioting it was the Pre 29 +1 speedloader.

So no, I haven't stepped up to carrying semiautos- yet. I do have a Rami and a Springfield Hellcat. The Rami seems completely reliable will ball ammo but I need to try it with HP's. I haven't gotten around to reliability testing the Hellcat.

The best defense is not being there. I have no desire to be ridiculed by the media.

Sadly, yes. I still carry my old school Colt Cobra or Pocket Hammerless in my peaceful little town, but my two retirement jobs are starting up in July and both require me to travel to Denver and Aurora and other fun areas.

For those days I’ll carry my .357 Sig 320 Carry. I’m not getting pulled out of my car - my first option will be the long skinny pedal on the right, but if I’m blocked in its time to make some noise. I figure even if I miss them I’ll set them afire with the impressive muzzle blast.

I can only have 10 round mags so I’ll stick with my Shield and a reload incase of malfunction, 21 rounds total for now.

If I ever get out of NY (I ask my wife everyday) I’ll pick up some 17 round mags for my M&P9 4.25.
