Default LEOSA shoot tomorrow

Postponed from May. St. Louis County PD is gracious enough to host retired feds when they qualify their own retirees. It’s a bit of a drive for me, but I get to socialize with some coworkers that I only get to see at this shoot, so worth it. Plus, I got a paper to serve in south city, so some nice lawyer will be subsidizing my gas and ammo. . .

Gonna shoot my Sig Sauer 1911 Fastback Emperor Scorpion Carry. I haven’t run it a lot, but I’ll be good enough for this event. There’s usually 30 shooters on the line, and plenty of “experienced” shooters, so there’s always a lot of “stand easy” while somebody looks at a jammed pistol like a duck looking at a clock . . .

My buddies from the metroplex are all avoiding indoor restaurants for various reasons from age to babysitting grandkids, so we’re foregoing chicken wings and beer for a tailgate in the parking lot. Good times and good memories . . .

Have a good time out there.

I finally get to go next Friday after numerous delays. Thankfully, I'll only be a month and a half out of date for LEOSA, but I have a state license to back me up.

Our sheriff's office gets top marks from me for their support and camaraderie.

Finally got mine done 10 days ago. It was also postponed from original date in April. Four years ago I got my state CCW to cover me just in case something like this happened.

Default My LEOSA qualification is soon...

...after two (2) cancelled shoots.

NOT complaining as the Maryland Police and Corrections Training Commission has been very good to me since retirement in 2005.

One benefit is it will be nice and warm and gets me back on ‘summer’ qualification schedule. In April, 2019, it was rather brisk ...err, COLD. Shooting component of qualification is held at an outdoor, covered range.

Rather happy to have my Maryland ‘Permit to Carry a Handgun’ in addition to LEOSA creds.

Be safe...be well.

Pretty good day. It sprinkled some, but only while we were shooting. The coronapocalypse limited the shooters to 12, to allow plenty of social distancing. Eight county guys, four feds. One revolver in the group, several down from me, but looked like a blued Ruger 4”. He was always last to finish, because the strings of fire rarely matched up to six. Lots of Glocks, and lots of .40. The county provides .40 to its retirees to shoot, so I imagine that was why.

RSO on my end kept chatting me up about the Sig 1911 Scorpion I was shooting, which I shot very well, despite the limited practice I’d had. He had yet to see one, and was impressed with. I knew they’d be watching me close with the SAO, so I made certain to hit my system every time. He’s months from retirement, and ready to go. As a group, the old guys decided we would not do it again starting today, but we were glad that we made a career of it.

Tailgated after in the parking lot, listened to the Cardinals and chatted about old times and old friends. Great day . . .

Sounds like a great day. Shooting with friends and making new friends. That makes for a great day.

I qualified LEOSA last week in North Idaho, about 30 of us. No issues doing the shoot. The local Sheriff issues the state ID card. They are delayed due to COVID. Not really necessary as I have proof I am current. Maybe in October the state cards will be available.

So many choices to make.

Okay, on to the actual serious subject matter. I recently pulled the pin and said to myself;

"Miami, you have one life to live. There's more than life to just working for someone else. You've spent enough time carrying the badge as a career. You got a wife and a little baby girl to take care of and spend time with. You can make money outside of being a cop."

So I resigned in good standing and had them issue me my LEOSA creds since the agency policy was that if you have ten years or more. You qualify even if you don't officially retire.

Which now means I need to shoot the state qualification course for LEOSA. FL requires that we shoot the statewide requirement of any actively sworn officer. 40rds between the 3 to 15 yard line with one mandatory reload and the longest string of fire of 12rds. I know... soooo challenging.

I have to run myself through the course twice since FDLE requires a qual for a revolver and a semiautomatic separately. No big deal. It doesn't lock me to only two guns. FDLE simply does it that way so if I only qualify with a semiautomatic, I'd only be allowed to carry a semiautomatic. Hence why I'm going to shoot the course twice.

Since my entire career has been nothing but GLOCKs. I figured I'll classy it up a bit.

Gonna shoot my Model 4566 and my factory DAO Model 65.

I still have my FL CCW (always kept one even as a cop) and I always will. But I have family in NY and CA. So LEOSA is a blessing for that when we travel.

Now I just have to find a CJSTC instructor that has the time to run me through the course.

Well, I qualed with both the 4566 and the 65.

So now I'm back to carrying my used and abused 342Ti.

Did my annual qual this morning with the local sheriff's office.

Good for another year.

Since FDLE requires that we qualify individually with each class of weapon. We're issued two cards. One for Semi-Autos and another for Revolvers.
