Was my duty gun for 10 years, trained several people to shoot and was carried 5 years doing PI and security work. In all those years there was exactly ONE failure to cycle and I could tell that it was a "short" round and not the guns fault...

Easy 9K+ rounds through the gun...

This gun eats everything including reloads that will choke a Glock..

SIG 226. Only about 1500 rounds, ten different mags. SIG 225 and 228, also never hiccuped, but neither used 1000 rounds.

I believe that my 1026 and my Series 80 LW CDR have also never stuttered, again not 1000 rounds. Possibly both of my Astra Firecats, not fired much.

Stock Glock with factory ammo, can't argue with that. At a Glock Demo Day at the LGS I inspected a G48, did a quick field strip and the innards were literally caked with residue. Like wow, they are touring this gun for sales purposes and they've never cleaned it. I put 10 rounds through it no trouble but that's trivial. Six months later I wouldn't be surprised if it's still on the demo circuit and they still haven't cleaned it.
Semi autos have gotten so reliable and have such an advantage in size vs. capacity that I consider revolvers obsolescent as a CCW.

That's a sad commentary on today's Army. It's a really poor way to lead by example. The recruits probably noticed he never cleaned and learned by his example. That won't serve them well, especially if it generalizes to other firearms.

The AK-47 and AKM are also very reliable even when really dirty, but the Soviets back in the day and the Russians currently still expect their troops to keep them clean.

I have never understood incredibly stupid things like the "2000 round challenge" where people intentionally run a gun dirty. It makes even less sense when you rely on it for self defense.

Thinking he's special because he is the "boss" is also incredibly poor leadership. Hopefully someone set him straight on that back when he was still a captain. If not, I weep for our future.

I had a Glock 27, about 1994 or so and a Glock 19 about a year ago. Neither one failed to shoot, but neither one fired anywhere close to the 1,000 round mark before they got traded.

My one and only that has made it past the 1,000 rounds without failing is my good-N-faithful Beretta 92 FS. My 6906 has been trouble free so far, but it's only about half way to the 1,000 mark.

I have a few that meet that criteria:

1) Kimber Ultra Carry in .45 ACP. It took a few hundred rounds to break in, but then ran flawlessly for over 10,000 rounds.

2) Kimber Gold Match II in .45 ACP. Same story there - it needed breaking in, but was flawless after that and it was my go to tactical match pistol for years.

Kimbers get a bad rap for reliability, but it's not the pistols it's the people who think they need to "upgrade" them who cause the issues, particularly with the shorter frame 1911s. A contributing factor are the people who don't read the directions (because they they already know how to assemble a 1911) and try slamming the slide on the frame when they have the grip safety depressed. They eventually break it, and then blame the Schwartz system.

3) Browning SFS Hi Power (a Mk III with their SFS system). I can't recall it ever having a malfunction and I carried it for almost a decade.

4) FEG P9M. I also an FEG P9 and an FEG 1st gen P9M that are just a reliable, even with hollow points and the early Browning style humped feed ramp.

5) CZ 75D PCR

6) CZ SP01 Tactical

7) CZ 2075 RAMI

(No comments have been needed on the CZ's - they just do their thing.)

10) Kimber Micro .380 I have had a couple failures with plated bullet handloads, but it has been 100 percent reliable with 90 gr XTP handloads, and the round count is up around 1000 rounds.

11) RIA Baby Rock .380. It's every bit as reliable as my Kimber Micro and no one was more surprised than I. I had low expectations for it and it has been a very pleasant surprise.

12) Ruger Lightweight Commander in 9mm. It's also gone well over 1000 rounds without a malfunction.

P226 SSE made in 2012 on a German frame. I shot many competitions w it and it has never done anything unexpected. It's a marvelous gun.

He kept the gun in his office. No one but him knew whether he cleaned it or not. Im sure they all assumed he did since it never failed. And again, he was a captain then and didn't HAVE to be out shooting with the Iraqi recruits, but he was, every day. Im sure they knew he was the boss, and probably thought MORE highly of him by the fact that he was out there with them in the first place, when he didn't need to be. Im a firefighter, and i dont expect MY captain to scrub dirty hoses after a structure fire, but yet he does. Thats one of the things that makes him a good officer and leader, not being afraid to get in the trenches with the guys even though he doesn't have to. My friend is the LAST person to think he's "special."

But I digress. This thread was about semi auto reliability. My story was about that.

I've got a few that have never malfunction, but my G21 I carried for the last 21 years of my career never malfunction. IDK how many rounds it has, and the embarrassing truth I didn't clean it for 20 years.

I only shoot Self-Defense loads under two conditions, to test it out and see if it runs reliably in my carry gun, or otherwise after the ammo I have loaded in my carry gun has been in there for upwards of a year. Not judging here, but you've hit on one of the large problems with boutique self defense ammo.

Ask people what the 'best' self defense ammo is in any given cartridge and more often than not you'll get a lot of answers involving bullets that penetrate at least 12" in ballistic gel and expand to 1.6x or 1.65x their original diameter. Those rounds are usually expensive and can be hard to find.

The end result is that people don't shoot them in their self defense pistol all that often and carry them in their self defense pistol way too long. It ends up being the crappiest ammo they own.

There are other downsides.

- Many people don't shoot enough of their self defense ammo to really be sure it is 100% reliable in their pistol. IMHO that number is *at least* 200 rounds, with at least 100 rounds shot using each magazine you intend to carry. Way too many folks put a couple magazines or maybe a box of 50 rounds of their self defense ammo through their self defense pistol and call it good. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't.

- Even if it is 100% reliable, they don't shoot enough of it to be 100% familiar with it's recoil impulse and it's point of impact. Most FMJ ammo, even in the same bullet weight, is loaded to a lower velocity than even standard pressure self defense ammo and will have both a different recoil impulse and a different point of impact.

- That, combined with inadequate practice overall means that shot placement suffers and good shot placement with a mediocre hollow point bullet will be far more effective than poor shot placement with a boutique hollow point, and infinitely better than a miss.

Personally, I handload and use 124 gr XTPs in my 9mm pistols. It's not fancy, but it is very accurate, gives good penetration and reliably mushrooms to about 1.5x it's original diameter with max loads.

I can also find the same equivalent in a factory load pretty much anywhere in their American Gunner load for reasonable money.

Remington's plain Jane green and white box 9mm hollow points perform very well and they make a great ammo choice for someone who doesn't handload. They work as well as the slightly more upscale Remington UMC load and the Remington UMC 115 gr JHPs can still be found for $0.29-$0.30 per round.

So my advice to anyone is to skip the spendy self defense hollow points and shoot something affordable with reasonable performance and then shoot it a lot more often.

If you expend the carry ammo in your pistol and spare magazine(s) on every range trip over time, you'll have hundreds of rounds of your carry ammo through your carry pistol and you'll have a high degree of confidence about it's reliability. You'll also be much more familiar with the recoil impulse and you'll know exactly where it's point of impact will be. You'll also probably do a better job of finding FMJ practice ammo that has a similar recoil impulse and point of impact.

I don't quite understand the premise, but it's not that critical anyway. Any mass produced factory made item can have an occasional lemon, even Glock. So if the question is which make and model has the lowest incidence of lemons, I don't think anyone knows.

If it's individual pieces, there are millions out there that are 100% reliable, and "100%" cannot be exceeded, so the concept of "most reliable ever" is not logically possible.

Using 1,000 rounds as a crossover between reliable and unreliable seems too low. I think you could take any compaact or service size of the main brand semi-auto’s - S&W, Beretta, Glock, Sig, Ruger - lubricate them and get 1,000 rounds through them.

I agree with this. It will be a rare, modern service pistol that won't make the 1000 round standard.

I'm not convinced yet that applies to the smaller guns yet. They still seem more finicky than their larger, serviced brothers.

Besides two Glocks (19 and 26) that have never failed, I also have a Browning HP and an S&W Model 1911, .45 ACP that are also 100% reliable. The Model 1911 even runs semi-wadcutters without issue.

I'm not really into semi autos but I've had several Rugers that only choked on a bad batch of my own reloads. Each of the following pistols have had thousands of rounds through apiece while never choking on quality factory ammo.

Ruger- KP90DC, SR9E, SR9c

Only counting in the hundreds of rounds but I've had several LCPs that always went bang.

If I were in some sort of contest or making a bet on which gun would keep going the longest without a hitch I'd probably go with my KP90DC. That thing will eat any 45 ACP ammo.

That'd be between my Colt Commander (sold) and my M&P9 Pro. But since I used the M&P on duty as well as off-duty (truly my edc), it would get my vote in a heartbeat.

Neither had any malfunctions nor a breakdown (unless you count the outer ring on the front sight, that happened to both of them).

Based on my unassailable incontrovertible logic, the single most reliable pistol ever developed/used is my S&W Model 18 revolver. Not one single time in all the thousands and thousands of rounds fired has that revolver ever done anything except functioned with the sort of perfection that would make Glock green with envy. It works first time every time. It works if I limp wrist it. It works upside down. It works sideways. It works up close. It works way out at distances where a .22 LR rifle would be better suited. It works with grungy nasty ammo that has sat in a garage for over 40 years. it works with standard velocity ammo ... and loss leader ammo ... and hot shot hyper velocity smoke and doom ammo. It is the pinnacle of revolvers, proven accurate and perfectly functional without peer among revolvers and beyond the hopes of mere pistols. One day I will enter the gates of heaven. I will leave all things behind as, it is said, you can't take it with you. However, my wife has a purse that like that of Hermione can hold anything. Doubtless God the Father will have Peter make an exception to that purse which my wife will have with her. And because my wife is my wife, she will have my little S&W Model 18 inside .. along with enough ammo for plinking, targets, etc. She'll also have my nice little Bianchi 111 Cyclone holster so that I can CC under my robe. After all, I might possibly find a way to get into the middle of Revelation 12!!! Never know. Sincerely. bruce.

Been thinking about it, and I'm not sure if my first 642-1 counts. Put about 1,400 rounds total through it. Early on had some issues with the extractor rod loosening. Replaced the extractor rod and that fixed the problem. According to my notes, it went another 1,020 rounds, for a total of 1,412 rounds. Only issue during this time was bad factory ammo, so the gun wasn't at fault. But after 1,412 rounds the hammer stud broke, requiring replacement of the gun under warranty. So, technically, it went at least 1,000 rounds without an issue that wasn't ammo-related. FYI, rounds were a mix of about 1/3 +P and 2/3 standard pressure.

Been thinking about my 1911s, too. Between the two of them, a Series 70 Gold Cup and a Series 80 Government Model, they have at least a few thousand rounds through them. I know one of them had feeding issues with 230gr Hydrashock. I think it was the GC. And I believe the Govt Model had some issues with erratic ejection (extractor clocking...?) and the front sight coming loose (I really regret getting a Millet Dual-Crimp front sight), but otherwise fed and ejected ball ammo. Can't remember if it had issues with Hydrashock. Hydrashocks were the only HP ammo I tried. Rest was ball from a variety of makers. Neither of my 1911s were, or are, used for defensive purposes, range guns only. Can't say if either of them had gone through 1k trouble-free rounds. This was before I started keeping track of round counts.

I've had the same experience as PANGRIS. That's the reason, I carry a revolver BUG even if I am carrying an auto primary. I've been on the range when almost all of the brands mentioned above malfunctioned. The only revolvers I've seen glitch were due to reloads with high primers or a bent moon clip.

Some of the autos I've seen glitch went double or full auto fire not failure to fire. Few shooters can control a pistol in full auto even when they expected it.

I've had a whole bunch of pistols, rifles, and shotguns that never had a failure, I guess I'm just lucky. Maybe a few guns needed a little bump on the slide to fully chamber a round after a few thousand rounds but that could have been ammo. If I had to pick the best I would say it was a cheap EAA Witness when the .40S&W cartridge was first invented and that was my "go to" defensive handgun for over 20 years and I used it in IPSC competition in the early 90s. That gun had many, many thousands of rounds through it and was 100 percent reliable and extremely accurate. I once was shooting with a buddy and shot a 3 shot group off the bench at 25 yards while my friend was looking through the spotting scope and he said "Dude, you just shot a sub 1 inch group"!

For me it is my old Ruger Mark I. Over 200k rounds but it is cleaned about every 10k with carb/brake cleaner. My much carried BHP was also very good, but If I had to pick one for all conditions ie, snow,mud, sand etc., I would opt for a 1911 standard govt. model with its loose tolerances which I believe would outlast and outperform any auto on the market today.
