I carried a .40 cal. Sig P229 for 20 years. Fifteen of those years, I was an agency firearms instructor, and in addition to bi-annual qualifications, I was required to go through an instructor update/refresher course every five years. I also scheduled frequent range practice sessions for myself and our other officers.
During a two-week "Reactive Shooting Instructor" course, we all shot 5,000 rounds of newly-introduced frangible practice ammo, and were not allowed to maintain our handguns as part of testing the round performance, as well as its effects on our handguns. All our Sigs sailed through the course with no malfunctions. During the time I carried that P229, I fired close to 20k rounds, changed out springs three times, and replaced night sights twice. Somewhere around 15k rounds fired, I experienced some intermittant failures to eject, and discovered that the tip of my extractor had snapped off (an easy replacement, with virtually no down time, since I was also a Sig armorer.)
I had to turn in that agency-issued P229 when I retired, but I replaced it with a Sig M11-A (essentially just a P229 in 9mm) and while I've only put about 1,000 rounds through its pipe, it has my complete confidence.
I also have a snubby S&W 66 that was my initial CC when I first entered LE. It's stood up well throughout the years, with no failures and minimal maintenance.
