Being proficient with one pistol for self-defense is Paramount. Carrying the same pistol all the time there is no question in your mind when the stuff hits the fan, as to how that particular pistol operates.
A moment of hesitation can cost you your life.
A self defense weapon It's not a fashion accessory. I don't decide on what to carry according to what I wear, where I'm going, or what time of year it is. I carry what I shoot the best and " I dress around it" and carry it all the time.
Having knowledge of all other weapons and how they work is also very Paramount.
JMHO
I basically agree with this, but sometimes the weather doesn't cooperate. Sometimes even the body doesn't cooperate. I usually have at least one practice session with the "new" gun when changing.

Personally, I lack the necessary money and free time to have a carry rotation, but you better believe that if I had the money to afford multiple carry guns and the necessary time to become proficient with all of them, then I certainly would.

It would enjoy putting together a series of different loadouts for different scenarios, but alas, I don't have the money to buy more firearms for carry at the moment, much less the time to train with them, so I'm just going to stick with what I've got for now.

Fortunately, I'm satisfied with my current EDC, it's simple, functionally adequate, and inexpensive.

CCW is a compromise, if it weren't I would CCW one of my ARs all the time, so I think we can all agree there's always a compromise involved. Sometimes, depending on location, dress, weather, activity or mood, the compromise bar will slide and stop somewhere between a full size double stack 9mm or a five shot j frame.
My life is not always "Mortal Kombat", nor is it always "Leave it to beaver". To think one carry gun is appropriate for all of my life situations is ridiculous.

Default There are three types of handguns...........

...........that I carry. The S&W J frames, always steel, the S&W K frames with 3 inch bbls, fixed sights and the Browning Hi Power.

I shoot these guns a lot and feel very comfortable with them. Sometimes it maybe a combo.

Usually have a M1 Carbine in the vehicle.

"carry rotation = seasonal carry" -> in my house

a hot blistering summer day in Ohio (M&P 2.0 compact-IWB)
bitter cold winter day in Ohio (PX4 or 92FS-OWB however concealed by outerwear)

There are a few points to consider in the "rotation" question.

First, there is the fact that if you are not carrying a particular handgun with you it's totally useless to you no matter how great you may shoot it, how reliable it is or how good the terminal ballistics are.

Smaller and lighter than can be better than a large and heavy handgun you don't carry all the time.

Second, concealment matters. Most people don't go around looking to see if you are "printing" etc, but if you are carrying handgun you cannot effectively conceal it can be a problem. Like it or not guns make a certain segment of the population nervous. If that person is a customer in someone's business and they leave because of it, that business then has an incentive to ban firearms on their property. Most of the times that happened in those incredibly stupid 2A demonstration, the businesses were considerate enough to only ban open carry, not concealed carry.

Concealed is only concealed until it isn't and too large a gun can be an issue depending on how you are dressed that day. I'll default to a smaller pistol when I have to wear a tucked in dress shirt, or when I'm wearing a tighter fitting shirt that won't cover something larger.

I also tend to upsize in the winter when I am almost always wearing a cover garment like a vest. The other half of that is that I also like to move up to a .357 Magnum in the winter because the possible assailants are also wearing heavier clothing.

Third, you need to be proficient with what you carry. I don't just mean something you shoot well at the range, but rather something you shoot well enough that you'll be able to draw and fire without fumbling with the operating system, and be able to hit the target, all while under the extreme stress of being in a life threatening situation and potentially receiving fire.

I like the 1911 and the Browning Hi Power, but I also like DA revolvers like the S&W 66, 686+ and the Ruger Speed Six. However, in order to carry both a SA pistol and a DA revolver, I have to shoot them often to maintain both proficiency and muscle memory to shoot them.

There are times when I can shoot 200-300 rounds per week split between them, and it works fine to carry both. However there are other periods where I cannot shoot that often. In those periods I default to a DA pistol in the summer, where it's draw, bring the front sight on target as it comes up into my line of sight and pull the trigger - just like a DA revolver.

All of the above affect my "carry rotation".

This has turned out to be an interesting thread. I see two camps. One says be proficient with a variety of firearms and carry what seems right at the time. The other says carry one firearm exclusively and be proficient with it. As with many things, there are truths to both positions. We all need to decide for ourselves which angle applies to us. Certainly we strive to be proficient with all the arms we own and we surely don't want to fumble in a crisis situation. Good observations all around and we just need to decide what works for us personally. We think and operate differently. Just ask my ex . . . . :-)

I shoot all in my rotation on a regular basis. In Az 99% of the time I pocket carry and between my old cobra, detective special,442 and model 36 3 inch Ive rotated them long enough to be very comfortable and familiar with all. I found that the wear on an exclusive edc was tremendous and no rotation made me lazy and didnt force me to shoot my other small revolvers as much as I should have nor did they get the thorough cleaning they now get after rotating them out.

I'm in the camp that uses "rotation" in the sense of "selection". For a variety of reasons I no longer carry a 4" N Frame concealed. Weather and activities are a factor. I have switched back and forth between a 642 and a 9mm Shield for about 3 years, both pocket carried. The 642 was for quick trips to the store, yard work and any other daily activity where pants were indicated. The Shield was for road trips. During the recent peaceful protests I picked up the Shield one day and never put it back.

But the 642 still rotates - counterclockwise - and the Shield reciprocates.

I just saw this. Dinky .32 on the street? Five shot revolvers when in a car?

I'm usually carrying my fullsize M&P9 and one additional 17 round mag on my person.

On the back seat is my Sub 2000 and two 33 round magazines.

Sometimes gangstas come in bunches. Sometimes ammo has to be expended to allow one to move or run away. Sometimes th*** don't drop dead right away. Sometimes -- usually -- you miss a lot. No such thing as too much ammo.

Yesterdays menu,
Very early pre-dawn walk Sat. morning, LCPII in my Talon back pocket holster.
7:00AM off to work as a PT RSO, Wilson Stealth OWB in a Warbird pancake holster.
Out to dinner at restaurant that evening, P365 in Kusiak AWIB.

Working at a range gives me options others may not have the opportunity to enjoy but, I am always aware of what gun I am carrying, where it is located, and totally familiar with it's operation and the number of rounds available.

Now off to lunch at my daughters house with a 340PD in a PCS pocket holster.

I have no particular carry rotation per-say. I have four that I carry depending on what mood strikes me and what I plan on wearing for that particular day will determine which one I will carry.

Since I started carrying I've become the guy who carries the same Model 640 Pro everyday.

Thanks to the scores of "rotation" threads on this forum and the inputs of many of you for whom I've gained great respect, I've tried to rotate: 31, 640 Pro, 642, 940, 547, Sig P365, Baby Chiefs, other 2" and 3" Chiefs, and yes, even my 460ES.

I'm 68, older than many, younger than many.

My 640 Pro, filled with magnums and stuffed into my lined Lobo Enhanced Pancake at 4 o'clock, is part of my wardrobe (jeans, collared shirt, vest), everyday, every season, all day long.

I admire those of you who can switch it up. I have learned I cannot.
