Default LEOSA Quals today!

After an April cancellation due to the beervirus and a second cancellation for a rescheduled qual, finally got the opportunity to requalify for LEOSA creds. Was five months overdue; happy to have a Maryland ‘Permit to Carry a Handgun’ for in-state coverage during the period I was not covered by LEOSA.

Kudos to the Maryland Police and Corrections Training Commission. They conduct LEOSA quals for more than 1300 retired crime fighters. Big PD’s in Maryland like Baltimore City PD handle their own retirees; MPCTC handles others and most federal retirees. This was my 16th LEOSA qualification course.

Classroom instruction (typically about 2 hours) and a written test are always prerequisites in Maryland. The classroom segment IS worthwhile, IMHO, always.

Range time consisted of ‘day’ and ‘low light’ courses of fire.
‘Day’ shoot was 50 rounds from 3,5,7,15, and 25 yard positions. Strong hand, off hand, two hand, kneeling and standing ‘cover’ positions are included.

Targets are timed, facing...set number of shots, timed, are the standard. Majority of shots are from holster draw, but some have ‘target covered‘ reloads.

‘Night’ shoot uses Bolle wrap around ski goggles to simulate darkness. Believe me, they are dark. (Range is covered, outdoors.). Thirty rounds; same course of fire except no 25 yard fire.

In case you’re wondering, 250/250 day course; 144/150 night...pushed one way left and just missed the 5 score on one shot. Shot my P7-M8; still my all time fav handgun...bar none. The pistol always impresses the instructors; another ‘let me know if you ever want to sell it’ today.

One glitch...had a stovepipe. My first ever malfunction caused by a live round. It was during one hand, off hand. Likely my fault; think I might have limp wristed it.

Did notice one thing...I do need to shoot more. I am not nearly as good as I once was. Also noticed it takes a bit longer to load mags, and racking the slide is harder than it used to be.

Still good for a few more years, though, I am quite sure.

Be safe; be well.

After I shot myself in the foot when they put the dark glasses on me, could I least qualify for air rifle or BB gun credentials? Perhaps a cap gun?

Seriously I can barely hit anything under normal lighting, I can only imagine how abysmal I would be in the dark!

Congratulations on those outstanding scores.

Congrats, Big D.

Our day / night qual is 30 rounds each. Day out to 25 yards. Night to 15 yards. Got 100% on the day and 98.7% on the night on September 4th.

Now if I can get the DOJ to send me my card. They told me on the phone today that it'll be another day or two before they send it due to them being swamped with paperwork for new CCW permit applications.

At least I know they got it...and hopefully I can keep this going for many more years to come.

Congrats on the qual!

I recently qualed for LEOSA here in the Sunshine State. Here in FL you "can" be issued LEOSA creds by your agency. Luckily mine did issue me mine. To qual we have to shoot a 40rd course of fire from the 1.5 yard line to the 15 yard line. No night qual requirements.

Since FDLE requires that we qualify individually with each class of weapon. We're issued two cards. One for Semi-Autos and another for Revolvers.

YouTuber hrfunk actually replicated the State's Qual Course for Active LE and LEOSA.
