Default Off Body Carry On A Bicycle ?

Because I’m an old goat, to keep things moving and the ticker ticking, I ride my bicycle every day 10-13 miles. Exercise outside in late summer in southeast Texas produces copious amounts of perspiration, or just plain ole sweat! Can anyone suggest a good bag/pouch that would easily attach to either the handle bars or frame of a bike to secure a small handgun while making it accessible? Wearing concealed on the waist is possible but would require cleaning each day to avoid potential damage to the handgun. Thanks, stay safe and be blessed.

I would advise against off-body carry because in most conceivable scenarios in which you might be attacked while riding a bike you'll most likely be knocked off of it and thus separated from your firearm in the process.

If you're worried about sweating on it, then there are other ways of dealing with that like getting a thicker holster made of a material that sweat won't soak into or carrying it inside of a fanny pack.

I don't off body carry unless I have another one one me. Example: when doing athletic activities I will carry a s&w340pd or colt mustang pocketlite in my pocket or belly band. Then in my backpack I will have a larger gun like a 1911, or s&w 327pc or 686+.

Don't know if this will help, but when I would go jogging I'd use a small fanny pack holster. I think it was by Uncle Mike's. It's very nondescript and wouldn't scream, "Gun!" like some fanny pack holsters I've seen. It's got a rigid base between the gun and my body, which supports the gun and helps with keeping sweat and moisture off the gun. I've never had an issue with sweat or corrosion on my gun.

I have a handlebar bag on my mountain bike for windbreaker, tube, tools, etc. The brand is Topeak. With another mount unit, I can transfer it to my road bike. I carry a KelTec PMR 30 in a Cabela's fanny pack in a separate compartment from my phone, billfold, and lunch.

You haven't tried this?

Or this?

Come on, be a dedicated gunner/cyclist

But seriously, depending on what you wear I'd rather invest in a good holster solution... any kind (IWB, OWB, shoulder, ankle, whatever works), a Sneaky Pete or a fanny pack.

Check out the NRA store... they have some nice things.

Seems to me an OWB holster, leather or kydex, if you wear a belt, under your untucked T-shirt, would work. Separate the holster from the gun when you get home. Let the holster dry, and wipe the gun down daily. Well cared for leather will last a long time.

Do a search for waterproof waist pouch. Looks like there are a few waist packs and fanny packs that are water proof. Now you gave me an idea about walking in Florida. May be a handy thing to have when out walking. Incase of rain it would protect a phone, Gun, etc.

Keep up the miles. That is smart!

So I have tried options to carry on a bike, due to a couple dog attacks and stumbling across meth labs in the past. I wanted something that could handle moderate off road mountain biking. Most fanny packs don’t do well there, as they bounce about.

AIWB didn’t work well.
Belt carry was obvious and uncomfortable. Sweaty too.
Used a chest bag holster for a few years, but it looked real suspicious...

I have used a sling bag for the last four years when on the bike. Kelty makes a dedicated bag that looks sporty but is really about the same as anUncle Mike’s shoulder holster. It straddles the difference between on- and off-body carry. Check out the Kelty bag - it is made specifically for this purpose and has just enough spare room for a phone, wallet and keys.

Also, has a lot of stand-off for sweat. I have never had any issues with that and the Kelty.

I bought a used LCR 38 just for cycling. I carry it in a water bottle pocket over my right kidney. The front sight started poking a hole in the material so it rides in a pocket holster. I wipe it down after every ride. If it gets messed up I'll let Ruger rebuild or replace it! My EDC is a S&W 49 no dash that is pocket carried, I find the pocket lint is worse on the guns that the sweat is.

10 miles a day with LCP in a neoprene belly band, super comfortable, however, low humidity to deal with. Also have a high intensity gel pepper spray in vertical holster riding the handlebar stem just under the
bars, having no wish to shoot a pest unless neccessary.
If you Google 'triangle frame bag' and switch to images view, you'll see a bunch of bags that look like they would well as an enclosed holster.

I got a tube clamp from Terracycle and made a flat bar mount from some aluminum to put a holster with a thumb strap on it for my governor. I mounted this on the boom of my recumbent trike and is within reach and always in my line of sight. There is a bag within reach holding the reloads should they be needed.

I just checked out that Kelty sling bag and watched a couple of yootoob videos about it. I really like it! Sounds like what the OP had in mind exactly.

early 2000's, walking in East Berlin in the early am after a night out with a West Berlin construction manager working with me on a project, and out of nowhere a gang of a dozen or so suddenly and silently appeared out of nowhere on black bycycles, wearing black cutoffs and leather vests. Buzzed blond heads, bulging biceps and calves, black backpacks, sheath knives on hips, circled us once with heavy eyes, than silently sped off.
My companion looked over and said "Werwolfs. Good thing we're white."
And explained they were a dangerous skinhead gang who ran drugs at night and on bikes so the police couldn't track them through the maze of streets and alleys.

Why are they riding around at night with all of that firepower on bicycles?

I front pocket carry a j frame on the bike. Keeps sweat off the gun. It is slow to impossible to draw. You can always carry a foot long piece of rebar in your pocket if you need something quick to deploy.

Training. In general, the Swiss train their army among the civilian population in the countryside. Expansive Army bases for training don't exist, leading them to use towns for war games.
Those bicycle troops trained to cycle 200km in a day, with a 75kg load.

These were troops war gaming at the elementary school my friend's daughter worked at.

Mary one other dumb question if you don’t mind? Do they use the bicycles to build stamina, i.e. simply for exercise? Or is that how the units would actually deploy in the event they were needed? Is there some advantage or strategy to using bicycle mounted troops? Tonight is the first I have ever seen or heard of such a force.

They had deployed troops on official purpose built bicycles from 1905 to 2001. These were special forces equivalent to our Rangers.
The nation has an excellent 65,000km marked trail system which would allow these troops to stealthily move about the country off-road on bicycles. This is critical, since one of the planned defenses is the blocking or destruction of roadway infrastructure.

I was out riding one day, saw a bored officer directing traffic, so I stopped for a chat. I asked him what kind of holster their bicycle officers used. He said their regular duty holster.

The Japanese army used bicycle mounted infantry very successfully in their invasion and occupation of The British and Dutch East Indies.

On another note, my retired father used to ride his mountain bike on a short rural loop around the same time each day. Three or four times within a week or so a lowlife in a beat-up car harassed him on his rides by crossing head-on into his lane and running him into the ditch while spitting at him and yelling threats. My dad began riding with a 6" Model 629 mounted in a holster on the bike frame. He thankfully never saw his antagonist again, but he said he got some strange looks from passing motorists.

In post 11 I described how I carry cycling. It gets notice by those that know and the sheeple never see it.

At lunch one day a couple of University Police officers were talking out loud about a gun that could be seen inside/under clothing. Since we have open carry and a CCW, they decided (out loud) that there was no problem. (One was the Assistant Chief, who I've talked with for 35 years when he was City LEO/Detective. and was sending signals to his guys not to hassle the old guy!)

We ride mostly on "Rails to trails", but will use lightly traveled roads, I haven't had a people problem yet, I'm worried about dogs!

Nobody today will ever start a dog gun thread, but 100 to 140 years ago "Bicycle guns" and holsters were major marketing topics!

As for belt fed weapons, we decided that our lone 3 wheel recumbent rider gets to mount the M-60!

I did a search on the term " bicycle bags" ...Amazon has a nice selection of little saddle bags that mount to the top center frame ...easy for you to access and compact size . waterproof , two pouches .
Or they have handle bar mounted bags . A small one with easy access front zipper would do nicely .
Thinking about a small waterproof bag on a bike ...that would be a good place to put wallet , keys , cell phone , handgun while riding ...keep everything sweat free.
I bet local bike shop would have bags you could look at and see how roomy they were .

Default No off body on a bike

I’m a avid bicyclist and motorcycle rider. I wouldn’t off body carry. It’s too easy for a assailant to dismount you via hit from behind, stick in the spokes or sudden punch in the face as you’re on coming.
I’m from Brooklyn. Seen all 3 done.

I have 2 small waist packs that my wife ordered online for about $10 each. Work great. One is a light gray color, and the other is a two- tone light/dark gray.
Do not buy anything that looks “ tactical “, or colored black, military green, desert tan, or camo of any kind.

Buy something that looks like what a Liberal pacifist would wear.

I bought a tight fitting pancake holster for my J Frame but have never used it. Where I ride it's pretty civilized. A J frame in the pocket is all I need.

They're also in uniform and carrying openly, something OP may not want to do.

If you wear a cycling jersey while you ride, one option is to use a small autoloader in a pocket holster in the right pocket (assuming you are right handed and have the shoulder mobility to reach into your jersey pockets). I know at least two people who do this, one because he told me, the other because it was printing so badly through the spandex that I could just about read the serial number on the gun That's legal here so it was not a big deal. But it's always in reach, it's on your body, and the jersey will keep it from bouncing around. If I were to carry while riding that's how I would do it.

Sometimes open carry isn’t as obvious as you’d think. I remember a few years ago (when I was still on the job) looking at an older guy on a bicycle (wearing helmet, spandex, etc.) ride by and he had what appeared to be a J frame in a holster on his beltline. The Officer I was talking to and I both noticed it but I doubt most people would have. (We thought he was pretty smart and no sane person would have felt threatened.)

I’ve also seen men open carry when walking with their wives in their neighborhood in the evening. Our community is safe thanks to all these armed citizens.

BTW, stainless steel is the way to go if you’re worried about corrosion.

Thinking about a small waterproof bag on a bike ...that would be a good place to put wallet , keys , cell phone , handgun while riding ...keep everything sweat free.
I bet local bike shop would have bags you could look at and see how roomy they were .

Watch how you mount a top bar bag. You don't want it to interfere with your cables.

I ride a lot and I carry. My town is safe and civilized, so pocket carry works for me. If I needed quicker access I would go with a fanny pack or something of that style carry. Things like that don't draw a lot of attention if you are on a bicycle.

I’m from Brooklyn. Seen all 3 done.
I've had the stick in the spokes done to me as a kid. Very sneaky and very effective. Don't carry off-body on a bike.

Thanks for all the responses. Much to ponder. One option I looked at was the Kelty bag. Unfortunately it appears the only version still available is the left handed bag. Also unfortunately I am right handed. There is a suitable answer to carry, I’m sure. In fact since I originally began this post I’ve given some thought to pepper spray. My main concern is dogs, not humans. Don’t really want to shoot someone’s pet that they don’t keep secure in their yard. However, I don’t mind stinging the dog with pepper. Might teach him/her to stay in their yard since their owners have not done so.

I wear an Air Marshall 3 by Kangaroo Carry. Do a search . Have 1 button removed on a few of my shirts. In event of a trouble easy to feign a heart attack & grab chest while doubled over and pull out Shield. Also carry bear spray since I have had a couple of encounters while mountain biking in the Smokey Mountains.

Reading this, or a similar thread a few months back. I looked for a little waist pack on eBay. Cheap, neoprene, two pockets, and pretty tight so it will not bounce. Did not like pistol in front pocket for biking, even in the cargo shorts I favor. Not a biking shorts kind of old guy.
Just room for an LCP or P3AT in one pocket. I already have a handlebar bag that I use for other stuff, and find it very handy. I agree with negative off body comments here. Loved the Swiss Army stuff!
Knew a guy who was in their Army. He liked 9MM subguns, but so did
all of Europe when I was there. Hated it when they pointed at or swept me. But back then I was all about my main battle rifle.

My reservation with off body carry... rather like my horseback forays in the past... is you can't step behind a bush or any of a 1000 things that make you step away from your ride for just a moment.
IMHO, you need to be able to discreetly take it with you. It needs to be part of your plan, because surely that day will come. A pouch that you can transfer, sling over your shoulder or other wise take with you is fine.

I've been riding some this summer. I could like carry in a 5.11 backpack. But I don't have one or the dough for one. I have a selection of good IWB holsters. My set up of choice is a Mitch Rosen belt and a Sparks VM2 holster for my Smith 640. I wear the belt and holster under my bike shorts. Just wrap the belt around me buckle it and pull the shorts up over it. Wear a T shirt and the gun disappears even when bent over on a bike. I carry the speed loader in a Camelback backpack with wallet and phone and first aid kit. A suggestion that works for me.

Have a Good Day,
HH
