If limited to 10 rounds, what do you carry?
I'm curious what folks who live in states with restrictions on magazine capacity are carrying or otherwise what folks would carry should they move into a state with said restrictions.
I've been considering this lately and I've narrowed it down to either a Smith & Wesson M&P40 Compact 1.0 or an M&P45 Shield, but I'm curious what some other options might be.
What do you or would you carry?
EDIT: For the record, I've reached my decision and ended up somewhere inbetween with the M&P40 Shield 1.0 Performance Center.

I kid, I kid.
Some days I carry a pistol/revolver with a less than 10 round capacity and I live in a state that doesn't restrict capacity.

Colt 1911 in 45 acp.
Seven or eight rounds in the magazine is plenty for my purposes.

Hmmm...interesting question. I live in a state with a ten-round limit, but older mags are grandfathered in, and if you have a carry permit you can use them.
At the risk of speaking heresy here on the Forum, my own first choice in a carry gun would be my Colt Commander, or my SIG-Sauer P-220 Legion SAO in Condition One with a 7-round magazine.
If you're thinking specifically of competitors to the M&P, with similar construction, the SIG P320 in .45 holds ten rounds, and the P365 holds 10 round of 9MM.
And then there are revolvers...I would feel well-protected with my 2-1/2" Model 19 or my 640 Pro...

Go to the guns I got back/settled into in the early 1990s some in anticipation of/insurance against the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban and/or its expansion.
S&W 3913/14s....... 8+1 9mm......I also have some of the flush fit 7rd mags for the 3rd Gen 39xx guns
Beretta 92 Compact Type-M single stack...... 8+1 9mm
Sig 245 Compact version of the 220 6+1 .45ACP spare mags for full size 220 with X-grip.
Sig 220 .45acp which replaced my 1911s in 1988 as my carry .45
S&W 3 inch Model 65 and 66s.
That said I've heard good things about the Sig 365. Edit: Just can't find a reason to justify getting into a new carry gun, backup gun,"extra" mags, holsters and mag pouches......

Here in Massachusetts, pre-ban (pre-1994) >10-round magazines are still legal, so the folks who wish to carry a pistol with >10 rounds tend to carry guns that can accept pre-ban magazines.
For those who prefer to carry newer design guns for which pre-ban magazines are not available, there are a ton of pistols that get you to 10-rounds. You do not have to carry a native 10-round mag capacity pistol. You simply use a 10-round crippled magazine.
Now, if you are talking about native 10-round mag capacity pistols only, I think the Sig P365 is the current big winner in the small concealed carry category.
Prior to the P365, I liked the Ruger SR9c as a smallish modern plastic pistol that was 10-rounds mag capacity native. You don't hear much about them anymore.
Bottom line: Tons of options. No one favorite, but the P365 is selling here faster than pancakes.

Same I carry now just with 10rd magazines.
But from your options I'd probably go with the Compact. I had a 9mm Compact and liked it very much. There was a TALO version that came with night sights I believe and X-grip extension so you can carry with full size magazines. Not that it matters to you, but I still bite myself in the rear for not having bought one when they were available.

My normal carry is a Kel-tec 9mm pistol. Or a Kel-Tec 40sw pistol.
Both have the waistband clip.
Both have seen action.

I live in PA and carry pursuant to a PA permit with no weapon or magazine restrictions. However we live near the people's republics of NY and NY, each with differing restrictions. There I carry pursuant to LEOSA permit but still must comply with state law. the PRNJ has a 10 round limit with no hollow points. The PRNY has a 7 round limit.
Usually I carry my 1911 with Hornady Critical Defense or a Chief Special with the same ammunition. I've changed all my carry ammo to the Critical Defense/Duty so I don't have to switch out every time I travel to Jersey.

M&P or P226R in 357Sig. If you're limited in round count you might as well go with something a bit more stout than 9mm.

If limited to 10 rounds, what do you carry?
Glock 26 or Shield 9mm with Magguts +2 so 10+1 with a reload in the truck for whichever one I’m carrying. It’s usually the Shield.
NY has no grandfather clause.

Dan Wesson RZ-10 or Colt Delta, both in 10mm. Once in a while, and especially if I’m out in the mountains, I carry a Single Action Army in Colt 45.
We have no magazine restrictions here. These just happen to be the guns I like to carry.

I'd carry the same as I've carried for the last six years, my 10+1 M&P 40c. I've converted it to .357 SIG using a Storm Lake barrel, and have shot 2,500 rounds since with zero problems. It's accurate, reliable, powerful, and pocket carryable, and that works for me.

I carried a 642 for several years as my only carry gun, and I still carry it on occasion, so I'd most likely go to that, or join haywood and carry a pair of them, which I've also done (IWB + ankle).
I've also been carrying my 1911 Govt Model around the house, so that could be a viable option. I'd have to get a good IWB holster for it before I'd start wearing it out-and-about. I only have a cheap Uncle Mike's IWB, which is generic enough that the gun rocks back-and-forth inside the holster (with bluing wear to show for it), has pretty much zero retention, and reholstering safely can be tricky.
If I were going to buy something new, I've considered getting another 1911 specifically for carry, maybe a Commander or CCO, or go old school and get a Colt Classic or SA Mil-Spec. A Kahr P9 has been on my short list of 9mms I'd like to get for a while. Of course, the Sig 365 would be a good option; I'd have to see how it fits my hands, though.
I've also considered getting a PX4 in .45ACP since I have the Compact in 9mm and really like it, and I'm familiar with the manual-of-arms. I know Beretta has them in their catalog, but I don't think I've ever seen one for sale.
I could just use lower capacity mags for my 92 and PX4, but I have heard that with some guns the reduced capacity mags don't work as well/aren't as reliable. I would probably get some and test for reliability, and put them into service if they work acceptably.

That would be virtually every day for me. I think my 6906 is the only handgun that I ever carry (rarely) that has a capacity of more than 10.
I have quite a few with higher capacity but I think they're too large to carry. YMMV

Glock 29 Gen3, with Pearce +0 mag extensions, carried IWB.
Or, if carrying openly (which I never do, basically ever...) probably the Coonan in leather OWB.

Same calibers/guns I've carried for many years. Something in 9, .38SPL, .40 & .45 ... only one of which uses magazines of more than 10rds - (12rd/.40) - and I have several 10rd mags for it.
Even when the federal ban came along, and my state enacted its own magazine capacity restriction, I was buying, using and carrying pistols with single digit mag capacities.
I carried one or another hi-cap duty pistol during my career, but I'd started in the revolver days. Back then I'd carried a Commander, Star PD or some revolver off-duty, and I often continued to carry pistols with single stack magazines even while carrying a hi-cap pistol on-duty.
I don't mind carrying my 7 & 8rd 9's, my 7 & 9rd .40's or my 6-8rd .45's. Matter of fact, I finished my LE career carrying an issued 7+1 compact .45 in my plainclothes assignment, and I didn't feel ill-equipped or "under gunned" at all.
Then again, this is the opinion of someone who often carried, and still carries, 5-shot J-frames on my own time.

An extra Magazine or Speed Loader. But every shoot out I have been in didn't need any more than 10 rounds! Guess that is why in 49 years of having a carry permit, I never had to use a firearm in any way.

Chicago has a mag restriction (of course) so I vary by caliber rather than capacity. I do carry moonclips/speedloaders
Northwest side:
The Loop, Streeterville or Rodgers Park
South or West sides:

To me, what is interesting about this question is whether I would carry a smaller gun.
I currently carry a Hi Power. If I was limited to a 10 rd mag, I could still carry it, but I think it would bug me to carry a full sized handgun with a under capacity magazine.
I like revolvers and would carry one some of the time like I do now.
My Keltec PF9 gets some carry time so it would still end up in my pocket occasionally.
My H&K P2000SK would quite possibly take over as my primary belt gun. My Star BM would be a contender. I could also see myself picking up a P938 if I was restricted to 10 rds.

I'd get the lower capacity 10 round mags available for my EDC CZ PCR.

If I only get 10, might as well step up the juice. Glock G30S.

Wow, this thread sure blew up over the last 4 hours!
I'm not a big fan of 9mm, especially not when it comes to firearms with lower capacity magazines. I honestly prefer .380 ACP to 9mm in firearms with limited magazine capacity. I also can't see continuing to carry the exact same firearm with reduced capacity magazines when I can carry something smaller or with larger caliber bullets.
I'd want something subcompact chambered in .40 S&W or .45 ACP. Although I wouldn't be against a Revolver chambered in either .357 Magnum or .45 Long Colt either.
Currently, the subcompact M&Ps are at the top of my list, although I also like the Ruger SR40c, Glock 30, and Walther PPS.

I currently carry a Hi Power. If I was limited to a 10 rd mag, I could still carry it, but I think it would bug me to carry a full sized handgun with a under capacity magazine.

That’s why I bought a Glock 26 and not a 19, plus I can still run Glock 19 mags if I ever move to free America.

The same thing I have carried the last seven years.
As Billy Joel said: "Don't go changing..."

Virginia is threatening to pass a magazine restriction. This year a 12-round limit failed.
Maybe it would not impact me much, as my normal carry pieces are... - Glock 43
- Glock 26
- S&W Model 36

Interesting question, and one that was making the rounds back in the previous fed ban on mag capacity (and assault weapons).
Notwithstanding the understandably natural dismay over suddenly being able to carry fewer rounds than were originally envisioned for your Hi Power ... why would you want to carry something other than what you were comfortable carrying and using, and being able to handle and shoot well?
Look at it this way, If you'd actually been in a situation where you'd been forced to fire the Hi Power, and you suddenly had 10 or less rounds remaining in the magazine ... would you have less confidence in the gun, or your ability to use the gun? Just because of the reduced number of remaining rounds?
I don't feel any different about carrying my SW9940 when I carry it with a 10rd mag than when I carry it with a 12rd mag.
Why do I even own 10rd mags for it? Couple of reasons.
Back when I was buying 12rd mags for it, using my peace officer exemption - (I was also carrying the model as an issued weapon at that time) - I was offered some 10rd mags for a bargain.
Then, a couple years ago, when it looked like CA was going to remove the peace officer exemption for honorably retired cops to retain the hi-cap mags they'd acquired before they retired, I decided to order a large, new batch of 10rd mags. Just in case. (And it didn't hurt that I could order them as an armorer, at a healthy discount. )
Well, the law didn't eliminate the exemption for honorably retired cops to keep their hi-cap mags (but we still can't buy any new ones, unless this current challenge to the state's law in the 9th circuit results in overturning the law for everyone). That doesn't mean they won't try again, though, so I'm keeping a bunch of the new 10rd mags put aside "in reserve", just in case.
Bottom line? I'll still continue to carry that full-size .40 even with 10rd mags, like I have in the past.
On the other hand, my compact and subcompact pistols will also continue to see common carry use, as well as my M&P 45FS, with its 10rd standard mags. I just won't be able to order the extended factory 14rd mags, which I think are silly and too cumbersome for carry as spares, anyway.
Different strokes.
6-8 shot revolvers are still 6-8 shot revolvers. Pistols with single digit magazines are still just as capable, practical and relevant.
Now, in this age of double stack pistols being more common than in the days when it was only the M59 and Hi Power models being "common", we may not have as many shooters who are as familiar with single stacks as in previous years.

A J frame is a-plenty in the average armed confrontation. If a threat is requires more than that, then more firepower is in order.

Photo location is in Israel, a place where more firepower is often called for.

Not in a state with mag restrictions but sometimes carry a 1911 officers model with 3 1/2 in barrel in 45 cal , 7+1 and 2 backup 7 round mags among other guns that I carry, just depends on how I feel.
22 rounds of 45 cal should get me outta any defensive situation I’d come across.....

There are many choices but here are my top picks....
For carry....
Sig P365
S&W Shield .45
Ruger LCP 2
S&W model 642
For home...
Sig P227
Colt 1911
No need to go less than a .45 in the home...

My newest acquisition.
