If you don't have the CCW in PA the gun must be unloaded and the gun and ammo be separated in your car. Think gun in trunk and ammo in the glove compartment.

If the gun is accessible to the vehicle occupants it needs to be unloaded and separate from the ammo. So gun in the car, ammo in the trunk for example. A big advantage to getting a License to Carry in PA is to avoid that hassle.

I don’t see too many people in my part of PA open carry. Probably one or two a year. Last ones were in the grocery store last spring. They appeared to be a group of middle aged suburban motor cyclists out for a ride. Oddly enough, they were all carrying XD’s.

But you have to have a CCP to open carry. It became legal August 15, 2021 and as of today, I have seen anyone open carrying. The same law also cancelled the permit fee but you still have to show proof of 8 hours training and your finger print card. I have had a permit for years but open carry sounds like shoot me first. I wont be doing it.

Beat me to it. Once again blowing off typing class in high school comes back to haunt me.

I saw a guy open carry at a beer distributor in Honesdale PA 2 weekends ago.

I don't know why he was, and I wasn't going to ask.

I had my 442 in my cargo shorts. No one noticed that.

With the exception of deer season, it's not a common practice in my neck of Penn's Woods

I remember some years ago a person prohibited to own firearms was walking around with a black powder revolver in open carry.

I forgot what the outcome of that was. Guy looked like Josey Wales. This was pre-social media, but in the internet era.

The only folks I ever knew who open carried in PA were my brother who open carried while going for walks (more for wild animals than people) and I think that one of my old neighbors used to open carry, but I'm basing that off of him open carrying around the house, so I don't know if he did so anywhere else.

I'm thinking of various places around Pittsburgh, namely on the roads between towns and suburbs, people always rushing to get somewhere in so much of a hurry that apparently safety is no longer an immediate concern.

It's legal here but rarely seen. I've seen it a couple of times in the recent past, and they were both the same kinda thing: Twenty-something guy, carrying black plastic in a cheap Uncle Mike's holster.

I've seen it frequently in southern Oregon. Not in Medford, but Grants Pass, Roseburg and other smaller towns. Most recently, saw a fellow in work pants paying off an auto repair bill in GP Walmart. Where the hammer would be stuck through a loop on the thigh he had a Glock 17 hanging in. No mag though.

Perfectly legal in Washington (for now), but I generally only OC in the woods, riding quads, etc.

I did OC at a barn dance the other evening, but it was a private event and I only did because one of the gals putting on the dance regularly OCs her Sig.

not news to anyone, but not legal here in california, except while hunting. i'm jealous of places where it is legal. spent a lot of time in the mountains and small towns of montana, idaho, and wyoming as a kid, so i always thought that a revolver on your belt and a shotgun and/or lever gun in the back window of your truck was totally normal. i suppose it's less common now than it was then even in those areas, which is a little sad. this whole "i sure hope my appearance doesn't offend someone in public" thing isn't healthy. if somebody is offended by seeing a gun, that's their problem. exact same argument activists of all sorts use for why it's important to be public and not hide what they are doing. seeing it makes it normal. hiding it makes it shameful and an uphill battle.

on a side note, in california the subject of open carry revolves around knives, instead of guns. california knife laws are extremely complicated and vary from county to county, but there are plenty of places where you can open carry knives here, and i do when possible, and have never had anyone say anything, even when it was a medium sized fixed blade. ymmv of course.

I have not seen any open carry since we went permit less concealed earlier this year.
Here in Great Falls I see 2-3 people open carry at the store I work at so maybe 3 times a week. The only time I open carry is when i'm hunting or fishing.

There's an older guy in my subdivision who wears what looks like a shoulder holster, but it completely engulfs whatever is inside it. I've seen him that way working in his yard and riding his bike.
Something like this:
My impression is he's a nut.

As other notice, I have seen a lot of open carry guys with cheap plastic guns in a floppy nylon holster. Usually not well dressed either. However, it seems that open carry has become more and more common and I am seeing more well dressed guys with nice guns in leather holsters the last few years. I don't OC my self, but it is good to see in that the more it is done, the more comfortable the population will become with seeing it, which is a big win IHMO.

Saw a fellow Sunday with one of the tuckable holsters (not tucked) and a subcompact, likely a Sig P365 or the like and I barely noticed it on his side. I wonder how many folks he passed that never noticed.

I am wondering if the uptick in crime and reasons for it has caused more folks to want to open carry.

NoDak is a gun-owning-hunting-competitive shooting state; very pro-gun. Open carry is legal, but other than hunting, and farm/ranch ( my son open carries a CA Bulldog at the ranch ) is generally considered to be senseless, threatening, makes citizens very uncomfortable, "macho", and completely unnecessary. I haven't seen a single open carry in public in years.

Legal in Missouri with the same quirk some others have posted, in that you must have a concealed carry permit to open carry. Concealed carry is legal without a permit in Missouri, but the state still offers the permit for those who wish to carry out of state.

I see a little open carry, but not a lot. I've never seen anyone stop, stare, and point at an open carried pistol. Sat next to a couple fellas last month who were open carrying while sitting at the bar in Buffalo Wild Wings next to me. Nobody had a come apart. I did give 'em my card when I left, just in case . . .

It’s legal here in Delaware. I have seen a few regulars. I won’t do it.
I went for a CCWP. I prefer to keep mine out of sight.

In Louisiana Open Carry is and always has been legal .
Lots of hunters , fishermen and hikers ... Bar-B-Ques to go to and show off BBQ gun and fancy leather ... Some Local Restarants give you a 10% discount for packing iron , open or concealed .
Louisiana isn't like other states ... it's no big deal . We wear a lot of camo during hunting season . I met with a client at my office , he was wearing muddy camo and carrying his 12 gauge shotgun ... he had made a early morning hunt , drove straight to my office ... I didn't think anything of it and enjoyed examining his double barrel hammer gun a Remington model 1889 ...
I kinda like living in Louisiana

Can't remember ever seeing anybody open carry around here until yesterday. A guy strolling on very busy Fort Couch Rd in Upper St. Clair (a wealthy suburb) wearing a pistol at 3:00.

Open carry is legal in Kansas but, I rarely see anyone open carrying in a public place.
When I do its usually some wannabe poser all decked out in his tactical Tommy gear.

Texas has a newly enacted constitutional carry law that goes into effect September first. While I seldom open carry, I wish it were less scandalous simply due to physical comfort. As an overweight, elderly person (not particularly proud of being fat) in a hot climate, open carry is FAR more comfortable than concealed.

My open carry is pretty much confined to trips to and from the Range and my stops in transit are rare. I've probably told this story, but on one of those rare stops for gas at a self-service station a lady with children in the car spoke to me and actually thanked me for carrying. Her remark was that she appreciated seeing responsible people other than law enforcement helping keep us safe. That was a shock to me, to say the least.

Concealed carry, as you all know, requires deliberate thought in wardrobe choices and compromises is comfort. The additional factor of extreme heat in summer makes concealed carry, for me, a sacrifice of comfort. Personally, I choose to make that sacrifice because of the discomfort open carry creates in others. But I sure wish our culture/society had progressed to not feeling threatened by open carry.

The running joke about my part of the state (mostly true) is the rural residents generally have a gun somewhere close at hand, and aren't bashful about carrying working the land.

We're not in the middle of nowhere (SW) but not too far from the middle. Cellphone coverage is iffy in spots, and at night there may be only one deputy on duty in the county.

Yep, central OK here and pretty much in the middle of nowhere, I open carry on the property from time to time and see it in Walmart once in awhile, I think we all assume everyone has a gun here because we have concealed carry for anyone over 21 without any permit, so I think a lot of people are carrying discretely and we are all relatively polite, just the way it's supposed to be.

I've seen guys who run the 24 hour fireworks stands doing Open Carry. Seemed appropriate. Some of those stands are in the boonies along the river.

Texas Constitutional Carry begins September 1, but as a reminder, the State of Texas will still require a "license to carry" to openly carry a handgun. Texas Constitutional Carry does not confer the right to open carry.

Based on that I kinda doubt we'll see a significant uptick in open carriers in Texas after September 1. We may well see an uptick in arrests for open carry if folks believe Constitutional Carry gives them the right to open carry and they do so without a CHL (license to carry).

Open carry seems pretty rare in Texas and I get around some. I've seen one in the past year or so.

No idea where you live since you left that bit of info out. If that were true in WA I would probably carry openly every chance I had. It's easy settlement money. A firearm does not suspend the requirements for making a Terry stop. I don't say that because I think it's true, I say that because I know it is, and have seen examples of police departments paying out big settlements for harassing OC folks.

I find it interesting you don't need one to carry a gun concealed, but you do to open carry when everyone can see what your doing

From HANDGUN LAW:

Open Carry is legal in Texas but you must have a License to Carry issued by Texas or a permit/license Texas
honors. If open carrying the firearm must be either be in a shoulder holster or a belt holster. These are the
only two accepted ways to open carry under Texas law. It doesn’t have to be any type of security holster.
Open Carry is not allowed on any four year Public College/University/Jr. and Community Colleges. See
Places Off Limits for four Year College/University Carry.

ODD to me, but that is me from a place where open carry has been legal for as long as I know.

You know the world is messed up when you can't open carry in Texas.

Of all the places to open carry, why a wealthy suburb? Honestly, there probably aren't many trouble makers around, yet plenty of uptight rich folks to freak out over the sight of someone carrying a gun.

I believe Constitutional Carry in Texas WILL allow for open carry, as well as concealed.

I've seen it done. Saw some kids walk into a small town grocery store and lean their shotguns against the wall.
There's an old geezer in my river town that strolls downtown with a 1911 sticking out of his pocket. I asked him about it. He said no one says anything about it.

As was mentioned above it is legal here in Louisiana I'll see someone open carrying maybe 2-3 times a year, Walmart and other stores. I never saw anyone make anything of it. I don't unless freshwater fishing or walking along the swamp.

The last time I actually saw someone open carrying was a couple of weeks ago at a WalMart Neighborhood Market, North of Denver. (Despite the fact that they request that you not do it on the sign at the door.) No one made a fuss about it. Everyone was probably more concerned whether you were wearing a mask.

No telling how many were carrying concealed.

i must admit, if i ever buy that sexy kimber i've been looking at, i would love the world to see it. so i might be nutty as hell too.
That's a common perception everywhere, with some truth to it. Unless you're down on the farm or the ranch, if you're OCing you've got some seriously flawed critical thinking skills. If you want a talisman to show off, buy a fancy watch or get a tattoo. A gun isn't a fashion statement.

Here in missouri one can open carry anywhere its not prohibited. Municipalities are considered private businesses and can restrict open carry. Private businesses too can restrict open carry. One cannot open carry on church premises, polling stations and federal property. one can carry open in state parks and restaurants that serve alcohol but, NOT at the bar. I have only seen it once and the cops checked him out for a long time. My thought about open carry has always been, several thugs coming up from behind me while unaware and taking my firearm, then using it on me. I CCW and maintain a 360 awareness as much as possible.

I think open carry is anomaly because no one does it. A case of "use it or lose it". It may not be a de jure (legal) loss but it becomes a defacto loss due to public opinion. My state is open carry and I have no qualms about carrying open. But I also don't want to give up the element of surprise. As long as concealed carry is easy and respected, I will choose to utilize that option.

There’s a lot of misinformation in your post. Here’s the truth:

I see open carriers about two or three times a month. It's not exactly common, but it does happen. I have open carried myself upon occasion. It will be interesting to see if it increases next week after the new Texas permitless carry law takes effect. I think it may, at least for a time.

Default I live in southwestern VA.

Open carry is legal statewide with some isolated carve outs for the repressives. Just now coming on line due to the commies recent rejection of statewide jurisdiction for gun laws. Local ordinances are now allowed to be passed and some places are.
At any rate I carry openly from time to time where I live as I carry on my farm for critters and such, and sometimes have to make a trip in town to the feed store or hardware store or whatnot.
It has always been a non event inasmuch as I never get a second look from anyone.

With that said, I am guessing that going towards the Northern part of the State, up towards Washington DC one might encounter a more hostile environment. My wife and I are pretty happy on our place down here in Floyd county and avoid Northern VA like the plague. Just sayin.

At one time, not so long ago, Texas had some restrictive gun laws regarding handguns. No concealed carry permits, and it was even against the law to have a handgun in your car in your own county, only while traveling outside your home county. That nonsense all went away about 20 years ago, when the Texas concealed carry permit law was enacted. More recently, the permit was changed to allow both concealed and open carry. As of 1 September this year, there will be no longer a requirement to have a permit for concealed carry of a handgun so long as you are not a convicted felon and are of age. But you can still get a permit if you wish, mainly to ease gun purchases, carry openly, or to carry a handgun in other states having permit reciprocity with Texas.

Like other postings here, during the time when open carry was legal with a permit, I have yet to see anyone who was not some kind of cop carrying openly anywhere I have been in the state. And I personally have never been tempted to carry openly for several reasons.

Legal here in Alabama. When it first became legal, a few years ago, I saw a number of people open carrying, mostly in Walmart. Nowadays I rarely see anyone open carrying. I did see a guy carrying in Walmart a week or two ago. Walmart, by the way, asks that you not open carry inside their stores though I haven’t heard of them kicking anyone out for doing it.

I don't normally OC but this last week I was up in Chicagoland and had to travel through South Chicago area. I went in with my pistols secured in the back of my vehicle because it was daylight and didn't want to excite anyone. Going home I put my holster on and stuck my M-59 and unusual for me put the thumb break snap closed. I had to stop for gas and as I was filling my tank was approached by an individual who walked toward me until I turned and he could see the butt sticking out of the holster. He quickly turned away and proceeded into the store. I finished filling my tank, took my receipt and left. I was happy to have "that look" which made him think I was no easy target. Might have been my black trousers, white shirt and scarf around my neck. (You marines know what I mean) For everyone else a clip-on neck tie.

It's uncommon but I see a few folks out and about town with sidearms. It's much more common in the mountains, predictably. Maybe a few more at rodeos and such. All in all, pretty low key and most seem safe.

Interesting thread. It's all about perception and perspective.

I'm amazed at the number of folks who've said they'd worry about offending somebody. Apologize for the 2nd Amendment? Balderdash! If we don't "use" it, we could very well "lose" it.

I wear a tucked in, collared, long-sleeve dress or sport shirt, always. I carry a pen in my left breast pocket. I have gray hair, well, what's left of it. Most folks who don't know me call me sir. The 640 Pro on my right hip has been there for so long my friends ask "who dressed you" if it's missing. If I have pants on, it's there.

When I'm in town, 30 miles from home, it's there when I go to the grocery store, the hardware store, to get gas, the bank, the doc's office, my dentist, everywhere it's legal. If I've offended anyone, they sure haven't had nerve enough to tell me so. On the rare occasion that someone says anything, it's "I feel safer knowing folks are carrying guns. Thank you."

Up here on the mountain a few nights ago a wolf's howl from one of the hills a quarter mile south of town set off all the dogs in town, including several packs of coyotes on the distant hills.

Had dinner at one of the two "locals" up here last night. Our dirt-streeted town has about 40 year-round residents. The place "hops" with tourists this time of year. I always sit at the bar where I can see the door. So do my friends.

Nobody ever asks about my revolver or their pistols.

A young tourist walked in and sat at the other end of the bar near the cash register. After a few minutes, for some unknown reason, he asked the owner if he was worried about somebody robbing him out here in the middle of nowhere.

Dale said -- loud enough so everybody could hear -- "Heck no, I'll give the robber all the money in the till and let him walk away, but he'll never make it to the door. There are at least four guys packin' in here right now. They'd take care of the problem." (Sometimes there are four or more gals packin', too!)

None of us want to have to live up to Dale's expectation. We're law-abiding citizens who believe in our rights.

The guy finished his beer and left.

You see, it's illegal to carry concealed in that "portion of an establishment licensed to dispense alcoholic liquor and malt beverages for consumption on the premises, which portion of the establishment is primarily devoted to that purpose." I reckon that convoluted bunch of gibberish in the state statute means "the bar" to law makers.

I've had this discussion with many county sheriff deputies -- the only LEOs we have up here. They think it's crazy that concealed carry in a bar is not okay with the law makers, but open carry is. The deputies would much prefer NOT to "see" folks open carry in a bar. The deputy who sometimes hangs out with us up here doesn't open carry, and she never says anything to those of us who do. Do the law makers listen? Of course not. They're afraid of offending the minority who live in the state's two big towns -- about 60,000 folks each.

One guy's thoughts.
