Default open carry in your area?

where i live, kentucky, open carry is legal, but i very seldom ever see anybody carrying, other than LEO. it might be different in other parts of this state. is it like this where you are (if open carry is legal there)?

i do believe that in this area, there is a perception that if you openly carry a gun, there's something wrong with you. and i do remember that the only three persons i can remember carrying guns were all nutty as hell. one of them got himself into a jam when he shot and killed a man in an argument over a poker game.

i must admit, if i ever buy that sexy kimber i've been looking at, i would love the world to see it. so i might be nutty as hell too.

I live in Kentucky and have a concealed carry license. We open carry at the store, but I don't anywhere else.

To avoid the Ken's and Karen's of the world I'd say it's best not to draw attention to yourself.

I'm in Oro Valley Arizona and it's very common here as well as other areas of the state. Personally I don't want to advertise to anyone when I'm carrying.

Many people feel differently though. To each their own I guess.

We have constitutional open carry here in New Hampshire, but I rarely see anyone doing it, and I don't do it myself. Part of that is not wishing to unnecessarily disturb anyone who is uncomfortable around firearms, but it's mostly because if I ever find myself in a situation where I need to use my CCW I want every advantage I can get, including that of surprise.

Open carry has been permissible in Texas for a few years to CHL holders as an option, but I have yet to see anyone do it...Constitutional carry becomes law shortly so I'll be on the lookout for it...Personally, I carry concealed only......Ben

Almost never see it on the front range of CO, nor in the mountains. Go to a Walmart on the western slope or wyoming and there's almost always someone open carrying. It's not my jam, but outside of denver itself it's entirely legal (as it should be). I will say though, somehow it's always "that guy" open carrying at walmart, with the best I've seen being a massively obese man using a mobility scooter, with his similarly massive gunbelt and holster resting in the little shopping basket on the front.

Pa. outside of Filthiedelphia open carry is allowed. I only know one person that does it regularly outside of being in Penn's Woods hunting.

Most folks around him find it a bit strange. I bought him an IWB holster for his Sig 365....... he wore it for a few days and went back to a "red white and blue" kydex.

Here open carry was legal from the beginning. No permit required. I see it maybe 3 or 4 times during the main part of the year and quite a bit during hunting season. Now that no permit is required for concealed carry. I am curious to see if things change. I think during hunting season it will be about the same, I myself often open carry when on my way hunting as I carry a longer barreled revolver. I have not seen any open carry since we went permit less concealed earlier this year.

I agree with Truckman, open carry has been an option here in Texas for CHL holders for a few years, I have seen one person that was not an LEO doing it and that was pretty far out in the sticks. I see no reason to advertise.

It's legal in WV, but I'm with the others about not wanting to advertise that I'm packing a gun. To me it's screams "shoot me first".

Before our state passed the law that a permit wasn't needed for concealed carry, I talked to a guy who used open carry because he'd let his concealed carry permit expire. He told me it had been a constant headache. He said he had the police called on him several times while open carrying in locations where it was perfectly legal.

For the last 8 days it's been legal in SC to open carry, only for people already possessing a concealed carry permit.

Default Open Carry

In the years open carry has been legal where I live I have actually only seen 1 person open carrying. Personally I think it is a "hey, look at me, I carry a gun" attitude, plus it just puts a target on your back in my opinion.

It's legal in Oklahoma, but I have never seen anyone do it, but I live in OKC. I've heard that some in the rural areas do.

Since moving back here in '79, I have only witnessed two incidences of OC. It is exceedingly rare.

Yes we do, and still keep rifles in our trucks, but seldom in town.
The running joke about my part of the state (mostly true) is the rural residents generally have a gun somewhere close at hand, and aren't bashful about carrying working the land.

We're not in the middle of nowhere (SW) but not too far from the middle. Cellphone coverage is iffy in spots, and at night there may be only one deputy on duty in the county.

Open carry in Indiana if you have a CC permit. But I rarely see anyone open carrying. I don’t think it’s a good idea in public places like grocery stores. It’s going to scare people that aren’t gun people and make you look like a jerk in my opinion. I CC all the time except if I’m out in a rural location.

I'm in metro Phoenix, and I probably see it perhaps once or twice a month as I am out and about. Mostly in Wal-Mart and grocery stores, LOL. Increasingly, I'm seeing more and more younger players in their 20's and 30's.

The Georgia Weapons permit allows you to carry concealed or openly. You have to have the permit to carry on your person in publc. Not needed in the vehicle or on personal property. Also, open carry is legal while hunting. I probably don't go to town without seeing at least one person open carry. No telling how many I passed that were concealed.

Open carry has been in NC for as long as I can remember. I have on occasion but not as much as I conceal. Last time I did was while hiking a trail on my own. I guess some of it depends on where you live. In smaller towns I see it all the time, in the cities not so much. There is a guy at our church who open carries to Sunday services, but we go to church in a small town. I've never seen anyone open carry ever get heat over it.

What bugs me more than anything else are those that just can't mind their own business and keep their mouths shut.

Comments like: "I see you're packing", or "your gun is showing", just make me want to barf. It takes all of my self control not to retort with a zinger of my own.

Like I said only time I open carry is on my way hunting if I stop at a store or gas station on way out of town. During that time nobody around here would even blink. I don't do it the rest of the year because to me it is kind of impolite. I know it bothers some people to see a gun, why bother them for no reason. During hunting season they are less apt to question it and hey, I am going hunting and that trumps just about everything, There maybe one or 2 anti hunters around here, but they have to be pretty used to it if they been here long.

I stopped at my FFL and got a revolver once, stuffed it in my front pants pocket. Then stopped to get gas went into get a soda and the clerk asked me something like is that was a gun in my pocket or was I just glad to see her

It's legal in NM but I see very few folks doing open carry. There were suddenly a few several months ago, but now it's pretty much back to normal.

Open carry is legal in Wisconsin, no permit required. Saw it once in a grocery store…guy looked like he was trying to impress folks. Most of the guys in deer camp, myself included, open carry a handgun as a ‘finisher’. Brother used to bird hunt the bluffs along the Mississippi and always had his 45 Colt loaded with shot for timber rattlers.

As stated earlier open carry is legal here in Texas for several years. The one time I open carried was one winter returning from a trip I left my jacket in my truck when I stopped for gas. Not an issue as I never left the side of my truck. On the other side I have only seen 3-4 open carrying since it became legal.

As Steelslaver mentioned, open carry is and has been legal for many years here in Montana.

With Montana becoming a Constitutional Carry State, I have noticed quite an uptick in people open carrying at the local Scheels, Shiptons, and Cabelas stores as well as open to the public stores everywhere.

I much prefer to carry concealed.....if that it their choice, then I respect that.

Have also noticed that almost no one pays any attention to the fact that many more are now open carry advocates.

Seems like you could start a chain saw and walk up and down the isles and nobody would pay any attention to you..........

Not uncommon around Kingman, AZ. Mostly it's the rural folks in town on business but a couple townies open carry as well.
On the one hand, I get not wanting to make folks uncomfortable and being a conspicuous target, but on the other hand I sort of feel it's part of the "old west" the tourists are coming through to see, I want others to have the option, and let's face it, it's amusing to be able to comment on someone's sidearm just you would a nice pair of boots or whatever and not have the only place to show off one's toys be this forum.
I suspect the tactical disadvantage is reduced around here since between the area and constitutional carry in AZ, you assume even if you can't see one, it's there.
My personal rule is, if you carry, carry something classy, and of course be extra courteous and dress up a little, since if you open carry your behavior reflects strongly on all gun owners.

In my area of TX, I've seen a total of three people open carry since CHL changed to LTC.

When Const. Carry goes into effect in Sept., I imagine I'll see SOME OC in the 1st Month or two, but that's about it.

I still haven't heard if unlicensed carry will be permitted in the Liquor store chain I work for, or if it will remain only 'Licensed Carry'.

I very rarely see anyone open carrying in my part of Georgia. I never open carry -- I don't want to draw any undue attention to myself, either from the crazies or from law enforcement.

Nor have I. Generally, my feeling is that open carry is tactically unsound and, well, just a bit impolite, knowing that some people get extremely nervous in the presence of guns. But, i am glad to have the option for one reason -- i no longer have to be concerned that a brief unintentional flash of a large concealed pistol may get me arrested. So i'll likely carry bigger guns more often.

I've yet to see it in Texas; certainly a surprise to me. I guess that's a comforting indication we have far more people with good sense using good judgement than I had previously thought.

The first time I observed open carry was in Prescott, AZ, about 40 years ago. I was downtown on the town square for a 4th of July parade. At the curb, horizontally parked, was motorcycle after motorcycle. I noticed that almost every man sitting aboard his bike was open carrying - easy to see since everyone was lightly dressed due to the heat. I asked a police officer about it and he said something like "Yes, we know about it" but he failed to mention to me that it was perfectly legal.

Anyway, I never saw anyone do it after that except police officers. Admittedly, I have done it twice. The most recent time was a year or so ago when I had to make a quick trip to a shop ten minutes away and I was too lazy to go get a vest or covering shirt and I knew my guy at this powder coating shop wouldn't care.

The other time was decades ago before it was legal except as a weird "exception" to the Texas ban on concealed or open carry that existed at that time with respect to hunting and/or traveling. We were driving to a ranch down near the Rio Grande and stopped to get some feed corn for feral hogs and it was hot and, again, I was too lazy to reach for my vest which I had removed in Laredo. Nobody cared, maybe nobody even noticed.

Other than those 2 times I never do it and I never see anyone else doing it. Those two times were such an exception to my usual concealment diligence that they remain vivid memories.

Now that it's legal in SC, I feel a responsibility to do it at least once.

My opinion is that if everyone who could legally open carry did, it would INSTANTLY become no big deal.

I see it once in a while here but not very often. I will have to say that the majority of open carriers here seem to be well dressed, clean cut people with quality firearms on their belts. They don't seem to be LEO since no badges are present. They don't seem to be trying to draw any attention but just look like carrying is just routine to them. The few open carriers with ****** equipment or with the "look at me" strut seem to be in the minority.

Open Carry is semi-legal in Pennsylvania, mostly because there are no laws against Open Carry, only Concealed Carry. However, pretty much nobody Open Carries here because if a firearm is inside an Automobile, even if it's right out in the open, it's still considered "Concealed" by law, thus making Open Carry impractical for anyone who isn't a pedestrian.
Fortunately, Concealed Carry Licenses are on a shall issue basis, meaning anyone who can pass a background check can easily obtain a CCL, no tests or anything required, and despite what certain elitists assert, the hills of Pennsylvania aren't alive with the sound of negligent discharges, so evidently mandatory training isn't necessary to prevent all of us civilian peons from shooting ourselves/others.
Meanwhile, the average licensed motorist in my area routinely speeds, blows through Stop Signs, speeds up at Yellow Lights, doesn't consistently use Turn Signals, and spends more time looking at their phone than they do the road ahead of them, yet each of them had to pass a Driver's Test, same as everybody else. It's almost as if passing tests has absolutely nothing to do with negligence and even if tests were as prerequisite towards a CCL, then those who are negligent with safety would still be negligent regardless.

Open carry is legal in Idaho for those 18 years old or older. No license
is required for concealed carry. I only recall seeing one guy carrying in
the open since the law became effective. He was in Walmart, of course.

I’ve only seen a few open carriers here in my little town.

My oldest boy was working at a Jimmy John’s in ABQ a few years ago. He called me and said a younger guy came in open carrying. I said - I bet it was a Springfield XD in a thigh holster. Bingo - score one for Dad.

If its legal go for it. Its also legal to wear your pants below your underwear.

While open carry is legal in my state it is pretty unusual where I live and will bring unwanted attention from law enforcement. Not worth the hassle IMHO.

if having a gun in the vehicle is considered concealed, then how do you take your gun to a range or hunting? do you have to have a concealed permit to take your gun hunting?

I am glad it is not. We have enough kooks here without adding that to the mix. Besides getting a CCW is not hard, and better the fact that you have a weapon to be a surprise to a bad guy.

I much prefer to carry concealed.....if that it their choice, then I respect that.

Have also noticed that almost no one pays any attention to the fact that many more are now open carry advocates.

Seems like you could start a chain saw and walk up and down the isles and nobody would pay any attention to you..........

I find it interesting that your seeing more open carry around thertr. I guess Scheels, Big R and Cabelas are kind of an attraction for those who would. But, then I don't carry here all the time and always do in your city, and the other biggies

IDK where you are in PA, but you described Scranton drivers to a T.

The only thing you missed is cutting through a parking lot at traffic speed to avoid a red light.
