Default LEOSA quals today!

Had my annual LEOSA qualification today at the Maryland Corrections and Police Training Commission (MCPTC).

The MCPTC does a terrific job and now has 1414 retirees who qualify there.. Have personally qualified there since 2006. It’s an 1:45 hour drive for me but an easy trip…and well worth the time and effort.

As standard,, classroom instruction/legal refresher/written test preceded the range time.

Shoot was 50 rounds, daylight. 3, 5, 7, 15, and 25 yards lines. Strong hand, weak hand, only. Then both sides supported. Kneeling at 15 and 25 yard lines. Barricade standing positions there, too. (Try as I might I can never recall the exact parameters of all positions but majority of shots are at 3, 5, and 7 yard lines.)

‘Night’ component was 30 rounds and made possible by use of VERY dark Bolle’ wraparound sunglasses. Believe they are designed for snow skiing in bright sunlight.

Targets are silhouette and facing/timed. Most is fire from holster draw but there are several ‘shoot, eject, reload’ drills. All shooters used semi-autos this time.

Shot my P7-M8. Got multiple offers to buy it on the spot as is the usual occurrence.

Qualified easily: 233/250 on day course; 148/150 night. No, I am not happy with the day score. Back in the day I was very good; no longer. Kinda makes me sad. That said, only one shooter aced the day component; no one aced the night.

Note: Old age is sneaking up on me! Kneeling on blacktop is no fun and noticed my slide racking skills are not as good as they once were.

Be safe.

Your shooting skills look pretty darn good to me!
How about a picture of your “Squeeze Cocker”. 😁 Nice pistol.

I have mine on the 18th. Its a breeze compared to yours.

No written test. Show up, 20 rounds, no reloading on the clock, 7 yards max distance.

Its mostly geezers, some younger guys probably out on bogus medicals, but at least it goes quick and only comes around once a year.

I think I’ll use my Beretta Model 84 this time. The gun isn’t listed on the card.

I'm doing mine later this month. Had a hand injury involving several stitches in a couple of fingers, so I had to put it off a bit. Should be good to go.

Did mine in Aug at the NRA HQ range.

They do it for free for VA residents and provide a nice hard card for your wallet.

Had mine last week. 3, 5,7 and 15 yards. Several reloading and malfunction drill. Still shooting 100% so no complaints. I agree with Big D, age is creaping up and reaction time is slipping.

Default H&K P7-M8

Here is the photo as requested.

The Nill grips are aftermarket, of course. But they do add a bit of style to this very fine gun.

Be safe.

I am a retired HCSO Reserve Deputy. When I asked about LEOSA, They told me the Sheriff won't allow Ret. Reserves to qualify at his range, only ret. full timers. They just updated Texas laws 9-1-21 that adds CHLs' to the list of people who can do LEOSA Quals. When the CHLs catch up with the law change, hopefully I will get qualfied.

Before I retired, our agency qual was barely as extensive as the OP's. Now, my LEOSA shoot is about like this. Mainly an excuse to go eat chicken wings and drink beer after with some old colleagues . . .

I’m in my mid 70s, handicapped & can no longer kneel down. It’s a good thing that I qualify at my former agency, they let me skip the kneeling portion & I still score in the 90s w/my M&P 2.0 Compact. No written test but the LEOSA qual course in my state is the same for full time officers.

I look forward to retiree range day in June to catch up w/old friends. We usually go out for lunch afterward to tell lies about how tough we used to be.

Just completed my LEOSA qual a couple weeks ago. Nevada has to be the easiest. No classroom and you go to any range who has an approved range master, which they all do. I always go to the indoor Reno Guns and Range. Range Master completes the paperwork for you and you’re in and out in less than 30 minutes. Upon successful completion with the handgun of your choice, you’re authorized to carry any and as many handguns, revolver or auto, that makes you happy.

3 yds - 6 rds
5 yds - 12 rds
7 yds - 12 rds

The course of fire is not timed; you can take as much of little time as you like.

Coincidentally, yesterday I took the ccw class for the sole purpose of avoiding background checks for firearms purchases - it's valid for 5 years. Complete the 4473 and split with your new heat, as many as you can carry.

You misspelled 'AARP Quals'

My agency breaks out in hives at the mention of non-sworn personnel on it's range. Would never entertain the idea of assisting retirees with LEOSA.

I've moved 3+ hours away and have a great contact in my area, retired from a local agency but still actively teaching BLET (Basic Law Enforcement Training) at the local community college.

He'll reserve a time at the local multi-agency LE range or a local indoor facility, get a group of 'mature' ol' lawdogs together and we'll knock it out, paying him a nominal fee.

It's often quite a mix of retirees - everything from retired NYPD to Western state retired Deputies to retired Feds to retired local Officers and Deputies.
If you wear ear protection that allows normal hearing, you'll hear the moans and groans of those rising from the kneeling or prone positions

No written test or classroom with ours, that's a bit unnecessary in my opinion. The course of fire is from 3 yards out to 25, with movement drills at the shorter ranges and kneeling and prone stages at the 25. Fifty round course of fire. It's the same basic pistol qual active troops shoot.

This year we started mailing in the paperwork beforehand for a background check.

I did mine this morning, and used my beater Model 13 and wadcutters.

The deputy took a long time scoring my target. Finally he turned to me and said: What are you shooting that makes such pretty holes?

I showed him a wadcutter round and he nodded and made a face like - What will they think of next?

Default More info and ATTENTION Marshal tom! !

Marshal tom, cannot reply to your pm for unknown reason(s) but the attachment should give you (and others) a good idea of the prescribed courses of fire.

In Maryland the ‘day’ course is 50 rounds; ‘night’ 30 rounds. Same as for active duty personnel.

Marshal tom, sorry for my delay and the technical problem.

Be safe.

Last year, I talked to the high sheriff about LEOSA and he asked if I had a place to shoot on my property and I replied yes. The sheriff then asked if it was OK if he had one of the deputies come by and qualify me. Of course, I said yes.

One of the sergeants came by, brought a target which I put on my frame and I fired about 15 shots at 3, 7 and 10 yards, using my Browning High Power. He came by a week later and dropped off a certification letter.

Just did mine yesterday.
Our states training center got off schedule and left a several month gap between my expiration and new qualification date. So, I went to a private range with certified trainers. It cost 1/2 the price!!

I shot 1 ragged hole.......well sort of if you don't count the ones that spread all over the place. Our state is pass/fail and the ranger officer stopped counting once he got to the minimum. So my score was???? The 25 yard line requires two strings where we begin standing and then must go to kneeling. I'm starting to notice a little catch in the knees!!

My LEOSA expired and I need to requal. Not sure what I'm going to take. Thinking about using my no dash Model 586 and my Gen 2 G17.

FL does the state course for everyone. Sworn or retired.

40rds from the 3 to 15 yard line with one mandatory reload. No kneeling, using cover, etc. Just work from the draw.

I recently moved from New Mexico to Colorado, so I contacted the local Sheriff's Office and I was able to shoot with them last month. It was a 15 round total course of fire. We shot at 3, 5 and 15 yards.

I used my Glock G48 and qualified the first time through. I had to wait to get my Colorado driver's license before I could get my carry card. I got all the paperwork in last week and I am waiting to get my card in the mail.

My qualification is this Saturday. I shot the course out back this afternoon with my Glock 23 40 caliber just to practice.
I'm looking forward to seeing some old friends. Every one get's skinnier and has thicker hair each year.

These days I only shoot the LEOSA course with the gun I'm going to have with me if I travel to a state with no reciprocity. So, I take one of my two Glock 26's. (10 round mags seem to be acceptable everywhere.)

I can carry everything else I might want on my state permit, including in states with reciprocity. So I see the LEOSA qualification as being targeted toward a specific purpose.

Before I had two of the 26's, I brought a couple different guns just in case one was in need of repair. Now that's not an issue.

In Nevada you qualify with the one gun that makes you happy on LEOSA qualification day, but it qualifies you to carry any "handgun" you want.

The course of fire for Nevada CCW is the same as for LEOSA and CCW holders can also carry any "handgun" they wish. Nevada CCW holders are also exempt from gun purchase background checks, while retired and active cops alike have to pay $25 and submit to a background check with any firearms purchase.

Nevada LEOSA (annually) and CCW (every 5 years) course of fire consist of 30 rounds untimed:

3 yds - 6 rounds
5 yds - 12 rounds
7 yds - 12 rounds.

I pay $90 for my qualification at a local indoor range. If I didn't live so close to NY and NJ I probably wouldn't bother. There is a 15 minute lecture during which the instructor reminds us that it's not our responsibility to save the world. The current course of fire is from about 3 to 15 yards and it has been getting easier over the last five years that I've been doing it. I have to specify revolver or auto, and make, model and caliber. I'm always the only revolver shooter there. I carry six rounds of non hollow point ammo so I'm good to go in case I stray into NY or NJ. There are always questions about magazine capacity and hollow point bullets and whether they pertain to retirees and nobody seems to have a definitive answer. The skill level of many of the retirees is very low. It's clear that many never practice. A guy from Philadelphia showed up and said that he couldn't find anybody to qualify him down there and he had to drive the hour north to do it.

Here in OH, the OPOTA standard course of fire for LEOSA is only 8rds total. I try to hit every LEOSA shoot I hear about in my area, even if I'm not due to expire since they never are conducted at regularly scheduled intervals and I prefer to keep my retiree certification current. Also it gives me the opportunity to see the retirees from other agencies that I came up working with, that I don't run into at other times. It's only 8rds so I'm not exactly burning through my ammo supply and so far none have been willing to accept a penny for conducting the shoot.
My former agency Academy does offer the shoot several times a year at the Academy but I would rather take a beating than drive thru Columbus.

In Virginia, we are required to shoot the same course active duty Leo’s shoot. Normally it is what we call the 50 TQC (tactical qualification course). 5,7,15, and 25. In my community it is offered annually by our local police and Sheriff on the county range, free to retirees. I find it more convenient to go to a local range that has a certified instructor for a minimal fee. A much less formal atmosphere and one on one qualifications with the instructor. As a former rangemaster and lead firearms instructor for the sheriff I find this much less hazardous to my health. Some of our retirees have lost any semblance of what it takes to be safe on the range. If they ever had it before retirement. Our policy and procedures specified attempts permitted for qualification, then one on one retraining, and then more attempts. There were always a few that still failed to qualify. Somehow the rules were bent for them providing additional one on one instruction until they finally made it. Of course they never shot again until the following years qualification.

I don't know who it is that doesn't have a definitive answer but both questions have been answered a long time ago and are clearly defined. If a person would read LEOSA they would know the answers.
1) magazine capacity is not covered by LEOSA. Nothing in LEOSA is mentioned of mag capacity.
2) HP ammo is covered by LEOSA. It's spelled out clearly in T18 USC 926(C)(e)(1)(B) includes ammunition not expressly prohibited by Federal law or subject to the provisions of the National Firearms Act;

This section was added to address the HP ammo. HP ammo is not prohibited by federal law or the NFA. Some states prohibit expanding ammo. LEOSA overrules these state restrictions.

Did my annual qualification on October 13, just before I traveled to Gatlinburg, TN. Used the Off-duty course (which is geared towards 5 shot revolvers, although you can use any gun): 10 rounds at 3 yards (5 strong/5 weak); 5 rounds at 5, 7, and 10 yards; total of 25 rounds, all timed. Used my SIG P320 to qualify and carried my SIG P365 on vacation.
Put the sticker on the back of my retired ID card and I'm good for another year.

I qualified last month and again last week. Last week at the full-time agency I retired from and last month at the other agency I worked for part time after retiring from full time. No reason to do it twice other than hanging out with some former co-workers. Plus, the part time agency had a cook out afterward at their outdoor range! No cost except my ammo. Used my recently acquired Glock 26.4, which has quickly become a favorite EDC.
