Sadly, not everyone who owns a firearm is a responsible person, ergo you get folks doing stupid, irresponsible things with firearms posted online, and like-minded individuals tend to either openly approve of it or otherwise say nothing about it.

Just because you have a firearm and you might even have a permit to CCW does not give you law enforcement powers. There is a good chance that this guy will now have none of the above, quite possibly for the rest of his life.

Definitely not a good idea to brandish and actually point the firearm at the girls. He will likely get burned for this and rightfully so. I also hope the girls get burned for their part in being thieves.

In my younger days I was pretty blood thirsty, Lord help the thief I found in my house. But an incident that occurred to an acquaintance of mine I have changed my philosophy. He shot and killed a woman in a friends home. She attacked with a butcher knife and he killed her. In the aftermath He was charged with Murder for Hire because the police determined the friend knew the woman and they had been feuding. By the time his lawyers got him acquitted he had lost his home and vehicles, his wife divorced him and he was fired from his job. Now if I catch some in my home I'm giving them a chance to run. I can't afford a lawyer and the cost of cleaning the blood out of my carpet.

I'm amazed at the people that after hearing about someone having something out of their yard, will post on Facebook, "If I catch the thieves on my property, the police can come get their bodies" or "I know who's stealing things around here, and I'll shoot them if I see them around my place". There's nothing like putting on social media that you're looking forward to killing someone.

I was teaching a concealed weapons class one time when a gentleman
raised his hand. I called on him. He said "the neighbors kids throw
rocks at my house, is it alright to shoot them?" I was stunned. I said
are you serious?" He answered yes. I said you better plan on spending
some time in prison.

Therein lies the problem. It's really quite that simple.

I agree. A knife, especially the size of a butcher's knife, is a deadly weapon. I have a hard time believing that a jury would not see it as such... although juries can come back with some head scratching verdicts.

Plus, what your legally allowed response to various types of crime varies from state to state and even then how state law will be applied may vary from prosecutor to prosecutor.
Posting on line that you would shoot some one is exceedingly ignorant. Might just as well hand the prosecutor a signed and notarized declaration of intent for future use. If anything ever does occur you have handed over 1/2 his case already.
The case of the shooting the woman with the butcher knife never went to a jury, but unlike TV the evidence of what occurred isn't always crystal clear, take some doubt, toss in a gung ho prosecutor in the wrong jurisdiction and it might well cost you everything before a trial even starts. More than 1 innocent guy has ended up broke and in jail for less. I figure shooting is my very last resort.

It's not just state to state. What would get me jail time in Seattle would probably get me yelled at in Sunnyside or Prosser in E Washington. Varies by county too.

Go back and read the post. Austin Texas CLEARLY stated that his friend was AQUITTED. That means the case absolutely DID go to a jury.

Does anyone have a link to this story? Seems like some here know a lot about it.
Anyone could shoot someone inside a residence and then go to the kitchen, get a knife, and throw it down next to the body. So a lot could depend on witnesses and how credible they were.

No it does not. Actually a judge can acquit, before the case actually goes to the jury for a decision. If fact he can do so after they render a verdict., He can also do so in the case of a bench trial. But in this case I did missed that part of his statement so it probably did go in front of a jury. Another case of innocent does not mean your not going to receive some serious punishment

An update on the story. Kristopher Egbert, 36, faces two third-degree counts of aggravated assault, one third-degree count of obstructing justice and a disorderly conduct infraction.
Cache County prosecutor Jacob Gordon told The Herald Journal the obstructing justice charge stemmed from Egbert at some point telling police he didn’t have a gun. That information turned out not to be true, Gordon said, but confirmed Egbert did not have a firearm in his possession when he approached the school.
Egbert was booked into the Cache County Jail on Sept. 13. Documents filed with the court show Egbert was granted release on an $3,000 unsecured bond.

Unfortunately, too many Americans are not responsible enough to effectively utilize the freedoms we enjoy today. Those people are why we have so many laws infringing on our freedoms.

Shooting rocks out of the air is good target practice.

You said a mouthful there. Behind every law there is usually some stupid or irresponsible action. Problem is laws don't fix stupid and irresponsible
