Default EDC credit card knife -- OH MY !!

I was at dinner last night with 8 friends at our Longhorn steakhouse. Somehow conversation got around to what men have in their wallets. I pulled out my credit card size "folds out into a knife thingamjig" 😁. One gal (picture the "oh me - oh my" type) asked why I would want to carry a WEAPON like that 😨 ? .. "Weapon"? says I .."It's a knife" (as I pick up my steak knife). "It's a tool". "If I want a WEAPON, I don't pull a knife out of my wallet .... I just pull the GUN .... out of my POCKET" !! 😂😎 ...... Mic. drop 😁😆!! .... End of THAT conversation ... 😈 !!

I carry my knife on a pocket clip in my pocket. It gets used too often to carry folded up in my wallet. I do have a couple of credit card sized diamond knife sharpeners sandwiching my credit cards in my wallet.

My pocket knife is a tool. Only in the most dire of circumstances will it become a weapon.

It's a nifty little tool, that's for sure.

However, I must disagree that knives in general are tools, as there are certain knives which were designed as weapons, and thusly excel at nothing else. Classic Bayonets, Stilettos, Karambits, Balisongs, and certain Fighting Knives come to mind here. Good as weapons, but substandard in any other role. Nowadays, more knives are designed as multipurpose tools rather than strictly as weapons, so the lines have blurred, and what most folks carry are indeed better classified as "tools" rather than "weapons" but that doesn't mean that every carry knife on the market today is a tool.

For example, for the last few years, I've carried a Cold Steel Ti-Lite VI, which is sort of a modern legal take on the classic Stiletto Switchblade design. As such, it's not good for much other than stabbing and to a lesser extent cutting. It's not much good for chopping, slicing/dicing, or carving, and forget about doing any of that fancy bushcraft stuff like batoning, feathering, or starting campfires with it using a Ferro Rod. It's a weapon, not a tool.

Okay, stop!

Y'all are turning a hilarious, concealed carry, accidental political event into a discussion wholly irrelevant to the topic at hand.

First, every weapon is a tool just like every square is a rectangle. So you need to get past the rhetoric and enjoy the moment.

An idiotic hoplophobe's mortification at the concept of a dinner companion carrying a weapon is cause for laughter amongst us in the gun community, not cause for dictionary definitions about the usage of edged tools.

Enjoy the moment! It's a "you could have heard a pin drop" moment of hilarity. Let it be!

Thanks for the idea, I just ordered a 3 stone/grit assortment in that size as I am kinda anal about keeping a sharp blade and have enough downtime at work to hone on it with these.

You should have hit her across her face with the steak and said, "Now that's a weapon, too".

Just so you don't think that the "credit card" knife is the ONLY knife I EDC. I do have the good 'ol SWISS ARMY on my keys. In my wallet and on my keys is the ONLY way I have been able to not LOSE an EDC knife !
I am sure I have made several other's days when they have found a really nice lock back on the street, bathroom stall, or underneath a theater seat.

It was not my intention to derail the thread, I was merely making a statement which is peripherally relevant to the discussion at hand.

He may not have intended it to be taken seriously, but alas, there exists an ever-growing number of individuals who share sentiments that knives are not weapons simply because they are situationally less effective as weapons compared to firearms. I strongly disagree with this sentiment on the grounds that it is fundamentally flawed and enables irresponsible individuals to disrespect the potential lethality of knives by miscategorizing them as mere tools which are only peripherally lethal when they are for the most part factually designed as offensive weapons first and foremost with their utility as tools being a secondary design feature.

As a result, I felt the need to offer a differing viewpoint on the subject of "knives as tools" which I initially had no intention of making any further statements on, just on the off chance that the OP or anyone else in this thread honestly feels that knives do not qualify as weapons merely because they aren't as effective (at range) as firearms or that their secondary utility as tools somehow diminishes/detracts from their primary roles as offensive weapons.

Hopefully we can all agree that weapons should be respected as such, preferably with any jests to the contrary being clearly sarcastic/tongue-in-cheek. That is all.

The situation from the op reminds me of when I first meet my wife. She was anti gun leaning. Some were about oh 3rd or 4th date andI missed getting my arms under hers for a hug. She bummed her hand on my Hi Power. When she asked what that was. I explained what it was. She took to 2 big steps back wide eyed and asked why I felt the need to carry a WMD. After explaining my stance on self defense and gun ownership she calmed down. It’s been 20 years now she owns half dozen guns of her now. She loves to beat down the anti gunners and their emotional arguments.

Ok, If you want stories, I got one. About 5 years ago I accompanied my girlfriend at the time to her company Christmas party. Fancy suit and tie type affair. This was a large medical group. Lots of doctors. nurses and other assorted liberals. The food was buffet style with little plastic plates and the only silverware was plastic forks. Unfortunately the main entree was roast beef. After a couple of attempts at cutting this stuff with a plastic fork, I took out my S&W SWAT pocket knife, flipped it open one handed and started cutting. Everybody stopped and stared kinda slack jawed for a few seconds, but didn't say anything. I finished my chore and handed the knife to GF who then cut hers. Then dinner continued without a word said about it. Actually, I think a few of them wished that they had a pocket knife.
I do kinda wonder what they would have thought if they had known there was a small pistol in my pocket, but I didn't push my luck.

No argument there.

These are all potential steak knives:

There are plenty more. I like to be prepared to cut meat properly. And I have actually used one or two of these for that purpose!

But FSW is correct - they're all very much up close and personal weapons as well.

Grayfox,
Similar story at the last Navy Birthday ball roast beef was served and like your event only plastic knives were out. I was seated with a real deal former Seal and both he and I retrieved our pocket knives to do the job.....those two knives got passed around to the entire table.

The ONLY question asked by anyone was "May I"

I was at a restaurant with a group from church, and somehow I didn't get a knife with my fork and napkin. No problem, I just pulled out my Benchmade, and proceeded to eat. One of the others said "that's quite a weapon", to which I replied, "nah, the weapon is in the other pocket."

The Norse had a saying, "A knifeless man is a lifeless man."
It makes sense to me since with a knife one could build a spear, or
maybe even a bow. Without one?

You can find them all over eBay, amigo - let me know if you'd like for me to send you one. Hey, Gina flew out to Dallas for a shopping day with her sweet (gay male) friend from college (he was having difficulties traveling, so she helped him so they could have a fun shopping day) a few years back. He flew from ABQ to DAL in the morning, no sweat. When they checked in for the afternoon's flight back, TSA found the credit card knife (just like this one) that had been in his wallet for months. No one was alarmed (he was a very sweet guy, clearly not a threat), but I thought it was hilarious that he'd already been through security and flown with it earlier in the day.

I just did a search on Amazon ("credit card knife") and found a bunch. If you don't like Amazon, just note the makers and search the internet to your heart's content.

I have a credit card knife like the OPs. It’s more a novelty for me than anything else. Just remember to leave it home when flying
