Default home defense/carry gun ammo choices

keep a glock 43 loaded with 124 gr. federals . home defense & carry gun also
back up is a ruger sp101 357 with magsafe ammo . no one has this ammo any more and it is proven lethal . i happen to have a stash of it .....bought years ago and kept in controlled inviremant .
had smith pocket 38 as carry gun for many years & can remember trying to master 158 gr. loads in this gun . futile effort . shot mostly lighter stuff in it , 110 gr. hp's & the like . the ruger is hefty for a 2 " , bout 23 oz. shot both guns today , the g43 acted as its usual self . totally reliable & good hits at 50'. the ruger ? had 142 gr. jsp's 357's and they were a little jumpy but not that bad compared to the 158 gr. 357's ! as i think back , i never really liked that darn 158 gr. load , in the 2 guns i have fired it in . i have a 44 magnum in a 6 " revolver that will let you know it is there , but a fairly lightly shooter compared to those 158 gr . loads !
maybe its just me but i can not understand why anyone , including the experts would reccomend this load . hit probability is low for me with this hvy load , even in the ruger .... what about you guys ? !

It is my understanding that all rimfire/center fire ammo has been proven to be lethal.

Pretty much anything will kill if you can hit with it. If you allow for the notion that what you are trying to do is keep the other person from killing you, that is not quite the same thing.

I carry plain old 148 grain wadcutters in my lightweight Colt Cobra. It hits to the point of aim, is easy to shoot, and makes a hole.

My home defense revolvers all have more or less the same ammunition, regardless of whether they are J frames or larger guns. .38 Special HPs. Done and done. M649, M686+, Ruger Security Six. Same same.

I do have a couple of 9mm pistols available to defend the house, too. Hornady Critical Defense in the Walther CCP and standard 9mm ball ammo in the M92 Beretta.

.38 Special, .357 Mag. 158 gr. SWC
.44 Special, .44 Mag. 240 gr. SWC
.45 ACP Rev. and Auto, 200 gr. SWC
Using the same kind of bullets keeps it less confusing for me. Tin cans and pieces of paper are about all I shoot at anymore and SWC seem too do just fine. Larry

Default 22's ?

well maybe but not for me . for recoil shy females or people who have physical restrictions the 22 can be pressed into duty . the 22 caliber MAY be lethal but if it takes 2-3 days for the bad guy to fade there is not much too think this round has severe limitations . the magsafe is a very light load with bird shot suspended in epoxy . someone once likened it to getting bee stung internally by 100 bees . in one of the first recorded shootings , was with a magsafe 380 caliber , the investigating officer looked at the shot up bad guy and asked where is the shotgun !

have just read a couple of months ago in combat hand guns , that the rounds NOT recomended for defense were 22, 25 , & 32 caliber guns . with the 22 magnum as being possible to use for defense , but not strongly recomended .
shootings have been studied for a good while and make sense to me .

Don’t discount the .32 - bigger isn’t always better.

I wouldn’t bother with trick rounds like the Mag Safe, but if you like ‘em go for it.

I have a friend that retired from the Hamilton County Coroner's Office in the mid 80's. He said that Potter's Field is peppered with people who were put there by .22's, .25's, and .32's.

Carry what you like. I do.

Well, you didn't ask us what we recommend for our women so we all just told you what we use and I stuck to handguns or I'd have identified an Ithaca M37 Featherweight in 12 gauge and an H&R Topper 12 gauge single shot - you use your hand guns to fight your way to your long guns (okay, I stole that line from Clint Smith).

Presently, my girlfriend has a Walther P-22 - it's all she can handle and sometimes a gun is a gun, right? But I'm working on moving her up in caliber.

Has anyone ever actually used a handgun to fight their way to a rifle, which was then used to finish the fight?

If thats all a handgun is good for, it must happen a lot, right?

No one needs more than a 5 shot J frame from what I’ve heard.

Carry and home defense guns are all 38 specials. Ammo of choice is UMC 158 grain swc. It chronos out to about 780 ftps, so it’s very manageable even in short barrel revolvers. 27 years ago I bought 5000 rounds at $5.50 per 50…don’t think I’ll ever see that price again.

Mine is G20. 16 rounds of full power 10 mm.
Wife's is M13 4" with Mid range .357 Golden Sabers so recoil isn't too bad.
Long gun is the 870, 00 buck and slugs available...

I'm a 12 gauge guy around the house, but for concealed carry these are my goto's along with Hornady Critical Duty or Defense.

158 gr. even in a short light M36 is entirely manageable. Forget the .22 and .25 stuff for self defense.

124 gr. SIG V-Crown in 9mm; 230 gr +P Hydrashock in .45 ACP; Gold Dot SB 135 gr in .38 Spl. Wife likes 125 gr. Nyclads in her .38. Dog uses teeth issued by God.

HD nighttime is a Savage Mod 30 .410 loaded with 3" Winchester PDX rounds. Backup Taraus mod 85 with Gold Dot, Second backup is S&W mod 59 with something I haven't looked at in years, most likely Gold Dot. I shoot it but not with my HD rounds. Day time or when I'm watching TV is .32 auto of different makes and models. My job is to stop the bad behavour not kill the bad guy. Pity that he wouldn't stop the bad behavour until he was dead.

the magic bullet is the one that is reliable and hits where you aim....
I always think about something my late uncle always said"you never miss the bullet always go exactly where the gun was aimed".

As a general rule, if one seeks out Dr. Roberts' duty ammo testing/recommendations, then finds one of those loads in sufficient quantity (500+ without a malfunction) to function test the platform(s) from which you, the odds are very good that you have solved the ballistic question. That is actually the easy part.

One must develop the right mindset and skills to implement it, and maintain those. As for home defense, the important stuff is to make your home uninviting to others: Fencing, lights, dogs. If you make the hostile go elsewhere because they don't think bothering you is a good idea you are ahead of the game. This will discourage the vast majority of those who might present a threat. The odds are pretty good that if have to shoot an intruder, you have not taken the proper preliminary steps.
