A LOT of people here in the US are 6"+ thicker than humans elsewhere.

9 is fine I suppose, in a .357 SIG

Now, this is seldom observed, but there's some truth in this: Americans are the biggest, toughest people on Planet Earth.

I'm not talking about the big obese ones that look like water balloons (although they can be trouble too).

No. When you travel around public spaces, watch people. I'm just about exactly average in size and weight for a European-American male. And some of the people around me are as big as refrigerators. There are thugs out there that look like NFL football players. It can be scary.

We don't really see this until travelling in a foreign country. I've done a bit of that. Latin America, western Europe, eastern Europe. I'm at least as big as most of the people in those places, and you see very few if any truly huge people. Deplane here, stop at a gas station, and chances are you'll see really big people and start noticing them. Sometimes I wonder why that is.

Try it. Look at the sizes of people around you in public places. Some are very big and strong.

Michael Brown of Ferguson MO fame was what, 18 years old? I have his autopsy report. He was 6 feet 5 inches and 296 pounds. He was within the size and weight range of NFL offensive linemen. A bit lighter than the average one, but he could have fit into a pro football line. He pushed around that storekeeper like a rag doll.

Now y'all see why I carry +P FMJ in the G19.

Glorioski, Daddy Warbucks!

In my six decades of semi-sentience I never noticed that people come in different sizes.

You mean 000? 00 is .32cal/7.65mm, 000 is .36cal/9mm.

000 Buck, now that's one 9mm projectile that most folks can agree will always get the job done.

Just like univibe posted, it is all about plecement and penetration. I carry for SD what I can shoot accurately. Now, ammo companies have improved their loads for modern 9mm. My go-to's for my 9's are the Federal Punch 124gr JHP (my SCCY and my P365), and Winchester Active Duty M1152 115 gr FMJFP (for my 6906). I trust that they will work, and they shoot to where the sights are pointed.

20-30 years ago, it was which 38/357 would work. Most were not as accurate as the 9's today, other than 38 HBWC's (which have never really changed), and 38/357 LSWCHP (which haven't changed much, but were only really accurate via handloading - for me).

Once upon a time I was a lowly seminary student keeping body and soul together by working night security in a shipyard in New Orleans, LA. In my ignorance, I blundered up on a dope deal. They all started shooting. They hit nothing including me b/c I was busy creating distance between me and them. Later that month, my brother drove out to NO and gave me a S&W 59 and a box of Remington 9mm Hollow Point ammunition. It was not particularly reliable about feeding, but I liked it and used it. Later I got a Model 19 that I liked much more but that is another story. It is now a little over 40 years later. A nice little RIA 1911 in (of course) .45 ACP is in the dresser drawer. By my side as I type this lies a nice little Sig 226 Legion in (of course) 9mm. On the couch is a B-27 I shot last Thursday. That Sig put all 50 rounds into the 10 ring. The X ring is now on vacation. Really like that Sig ... 226 is about ideal and the 9mm is all I need. Now, for fiddling around shooting matches, etc., I'm partial to 1911's and S&W 686's. Sincerely. bruce.

I thought that everyone had reached the consensus that .40 S&W was the King of Compromise?

Or was it The Solution to a Nonexistent Problem?

No wait, I remember now! It was; "An Arbitrary Blanket Statement Fanboys/Trolls Say For Lack of a Convincing Argument in Favor of their Preferred Cartridge." I was way off...

But seriously, folks... 'Tis the Season to be Jolly. So let's try not to be Grinches, at least for the next few days, huh?

If nothing else, can't we all agree that any cartridge beats a stocking full of coal for self-defense?

How's that for a compromise?

Only 9mm

shooting steel challenge and USPSA most weekends equates to roughly ~1,000/month. That is only possible for me in 9mm where brass is available everywhere relatively easily. 38 super I would not even venture to imagine how to...
