If I am reading the Nevada Revised Statues correctly, saps, billy clubs and various other percussive persuaders are outlawed here.

In my state, one of these is legally treated the same as a firearm in terms of places that prohibit carry. But in a place where carrying both is allowed I think I prefer having something that reaches out farther than arms’ length.

I was never "issued" a blackjack but bought and carried one. I never had an occasion to use it. When I started in law enforcement in 1978 most agencies/officers carried them. Our sister agency the NC State Highway Patrol issued the "Convoy." They even had their uniform pants made with a pocket to carry them.

Later during my career they were taken away from the NC SHP. One of their attorneys had one mounted on a plaque in her office. The brass plate that was affixed below it read: "The $186,000.00 Convoy." That's what it cost the State of North Carolina in the civil suit that resulted in their being banned.

I was later issued and trained with an "ASP Baton." Never used it in a defensive action, but they were great for searching pockets of suspects and searching under couches, chairs and cushions. Simply deploying them got people's attention. As a reserve officer today I have one that I carry when working and keep a smaller version in my vehicle. I also keep my certification training up to date with it.

Laws vary from one state and city to another, but the likely answer is "NO", thou shalt have no such implements under penalty of law.

If thou chooseth to utilize such implements thou might expect a liability lawyer to emphasize thou willful disobedience of such public laws as might regulate possession of such horrible implements.

I choose to carry a Louisville Slugger baseball bat, along with my old fielder's glove and a baseball, just in case I ever find a pick-up baseball game to participate in.

America's favorite pastime and all that stuff.

After an old injury, my ankle sometimes gives me trouble. I keep a cane in the car in case it goes out on me while I'm out and about. Made of oak with a rubber tip on one end and a ball shape on the other. It's a comfort knowing it's there.

Totin' a slapper in some jurisdictions these days will run one afoul of the statutes.

I recall back in the 70's LE uniform pants often had a special pocket sewn in the the officer's slapper. Today's efficient replacement for it is the expandable baton; they work and officers can be trained in them.

When I go out of town and work where weapons are not allowed in the parking lots I get all nostalgic for my days as a salmon seiner and put a 2.5' piece of line from the bottom of a seine in my rig for "good luck". It looks like it is just an old chunk of jacketed rope about a 1" in diameter. Deep inside is a bunch of fine lead wire braided together around a core of line. All that shows on the ends is worn fuzz. A fathom (6') of it weighs 8#. My piece weighs about 3#

Just a fat old man with a piece of rope.

California is so restrictive I’m not even allowed to buy my favorite gum. But I have a connection in Florida who sends it to me. Hopefully Fed Ex doesn’t find out.

Aside from the fact I’d like to not get that close, how much gear can the well equipped person carry on his person all day long?

The first uniforms I was issued had a sewn-in sap pocket along the right trouser seam (for right-handed officers). We were allowed, but not required, to carry a sap of some type, most carried the round style known as a convoy. We were required to carry a nightstick/baton. The department issued whatever was in the supply room at the time. You could end up with anything from a GI surplus MP baton to an up-to-date (for the time) plastic baton. I carried my own Bianchi "Magic Wand" as well as a convoy (I still have the convoy, the baton is long gone).

In the academy, we were trained on the Koga method with the baton, and received rudimentary training with the sap, i.e., no head strikes, aim for the pressure points. One of the strikes was a punch to the chest, allowing the spring weight to snap forward and strike the collarbone, another was striking the elbow.

In just a couple of years after I started, the sap pockets went away, so if you carried one, it usually ended up in your back pocket. The new Chief was a stickler for uniformity and soon the saps went away, not because they were "dangerous," but since not everyone carried one, no one would carry one. Everyone had to wear their duty belts in the same configuration (left-hand/right-hand exception), and the entire shift had to be in the same uniform (long sleeve with ties or short sleeves). I left that department soon after the new Chief arrived.

Carried one in 67-68, had one of the old hands tell me when hit with one
of these their eyes cross and their knees turn to butter. For 1st month
a 10 inch piece of cable with electrical tape wrapping. That along with a Colt .357 trooper and a 12 guage in the car.
I left the sap with my folks when I went into the Navy in 69 along with
both guns.
Now it is 12 inches of 1/2in. log chain replaces the sap. I got that idea
from a bouncer in one of those out in the country bar/dance halls back
in the 60's.

It was a spring loaded single Cuff with a T handle on top…The few Old timers that had one could instantly snap it on a wrist and have immediate compliance…. I carried a D Cell Kel-lite, later upgraded to a rechargeable Maglite…In the late 70s, the Dept. issued PR-24s, after going thru a 40 hr. Course…..I really liked the PR-24…Really didn’t see anyone with a Sap or Blackjack after that…late 80s, the Dept. transitioned over and issued the ASP….I never liked the expandable aluminum Asp…One of our guys went to a disturbance at a convenience store and when he deployed the Asp, it was ineffective and he wound up injured and in the hospital for several weeks….I retired before the Taser came out….It’s NOT the magic wand it’s advertised to be.

People resist because if they get away and escape, no jail for the time being, if they are subdued, after medical treatment ,as soon as they hit the cell block, “.Hey, what happened to you?” “ Five O messed me up”… Instant street creds..

The only implements I carry now, is a Firearm and a re-load, and a Kubotan on my Key Ring….I’ve got an old Kel-lite with the 3 position switch between the seat and door in my Car….
Ditto that.

Department did not allow for anything other that the stick, mace and flashlight. The "D" cell Kell light did see action more than once. Saps, gloves and the like were strict no-no's as they were construed as excessive force devices.

Kell light was deployed one night, contrary to department policy about head strikes - large gang fight in a parking lot, one officer was attempting to arrest a suspect, hand another jump on his back and had a third trying to gain control of his weapon from the holster.

The big, nasty refugee from the group "W" bench in the leather vest got a gentle tap on the head with the kell light which promptly ended his gaining control of the weapon while I continued to another altercation.

Later at the hospital the group "W" refugee was sitting with a nasty head laceration. Asking him what happened he said a bar fight then smile and added "You should have seen the other guy"

A friend of mine is a WWII reenactor , the hat he wears is an overseas cap with a couple silver dollars sewn into the front. He says it has served him well a couple times in bars he's gone to after an event. Evidently a common practice with GIs stationed in Britain before D-Day, for when out on the town and "sporting events" ensued 😊

Last I knew saps and such were illegal to carry in Tennessee . Not sure now that they allow carrying a handgun but I think that is still the case. Kinda stupid but laws are meant to be laws and smart or stupid obviously plays no part in their making.

This thread reminds me of a old-fashioned cop term I read in research of some 1930s gangsters. In a day when police batons were maid of a hard wood, getting your head all lumped up while boarding the paddy wagon was called a "hickory shampoo."

Our uniform pants had the same pocket but only on the right. As a leftie my blackjack was carried in my left back pocket, behind my weapon. The training we rec’vd on expandable batons involved leg & arm strikes only, which only made combative suspects more combative w/more cops getting hurt (backs, knees & shoulders). I retired in ‘97 when we were first getting pepper spray. Although the spray was not 100% it did take the fight out of most badguys, but you had to be ready for the blowback.

I could get away with carrying a shillelagh as long as it would be like a cane as I have an artificial leg and can put on a nice limp when I want to. Maybe I should get one.

I wouldn't carry one as I already have trouble keeping my pants up but I am allowed to do so here.

As per Ohio HB140:

Ohioans can now also legally purchase and own certain weapons, including brass knuckles, cestuses, billy clubs, blackjacks, sandbags, switchblade knives, springblade knives and gravity knives.

I still have my old flat slapper, which I carried until dept regs banned them.

I used it extremely seldom but each time is it was necessary and did the job.

I found the baton to be cumbersome and unwieldy in very close quarters situations where there was just not enough room to maneuver. The slapper did not have that limitation.

I checked the law where I live and it’s the same here, even for mere possession.

The Life Changer coin purse would serve for civilian use.
Pop the snap and a legal blackjack falls into your hand.
Just sayin’.

I often wonder that when guys post photos of their everyday carry consisting of a primary gun, backup gun, cell phone, tactical flashlight, keys, wallet, pepper spray, etc. I guess I "could" do that, but for my own lifestyle it's just not worth the effort.

Was at a bar with my buddy back when we were in our 20s. It was a Sunday afternoon, pretty slow day at the bar. There was a bartender, a doorman (bouncer), and a cocktail waitress working.

Five meatheads came in, pretty big guys. After a couple of drinks, they start harassing the cocktail waitress. A guy that was by himself spoke up for the girl, and the 5 guys start to push him around. I said to my buddy, ‘he needs help, let’s go over there.’ No sooner did we go to get up, the bouncer confronts the guys, and they all line up facing him to do him in. s was getting interesting! Bouncer then pulls out a slap Jack from his back pocket…. I’ll never forget it, five guys coming at him, and he just methodically starts slapping guys in the head; one down, two down, three down, the other two put their hands up and backed off. Funny as hell seeing them literally dragging their buddies out of the bar. Bouncer didn’t break a sweat, three slaps and it was over! Almost comical.

On the way out, I noticed that the bartender had a stainless revolver on his hip. I used to go to the nicest bars!! .
