I don't believe in calling people trolls.

I think it's stupid.

He didn't force you to read and comment.

Well, he/she just got back from a 30 day involuntary forum vacation, so there’s that. Given my experience with infraction points, you kinda have to set that as a goal . . .

AR-15 Either everybody needs one and you're irresponsible if you don't have one or nobody needs one and you're irresponsible if you do. At the risk of being vilified by both sides, let me suggest that it is a viable option in many. but not all circumstances, a better option than a pistol in some cases and a lesser option in others, but definitely not obsolete and probably won't be until replaced by the phaser or plasma rifle. To steal a great line from Matthew Quigley "I said I didn't have much use for one, not that I didn't know how to use one."

Not always, I get nailed a lot for posting a thread in the wrong forum like an idiot. Im just giving him the benefit of doubt because I know how our administration team keeps a clean house.

But I guess the OP lives in Mayberry, or Lake Wobegon, where life is perfect.
I live in the suburbs, too, and while I'd prefer a rifle or shotgun in the situation you describe, chances are good that what I would have immediately accessible is a handgun, concealed on my person. Even when the mostly peaceful protesters were doing undocumented shopping one town away a couple summers ago the long guns were inside.

i'm very tempted to sell my ar-15 which is just sitting collecting dust. for home defense, i can use my full size or compact guns, for conceal carry i can carry my m&p shield.

so what is the point of the ar-15 for most people unless they're expecting to fight a war? i stopped believing shtf is going to be a possibility and it's just not financially responsible to keep these guns and bullets and training for the rifle.
Don't get out much do ya???? Pistolas are a small part of the entire firearms equation.

Don't want to add to the flames, just saying personally I found myself in the same boat a year ago. My AR was purchased for NRA Highpower, but I long ago lost interest in shooting that particular rifle. So it too sat basically unused for years.

Last year I traded it in on another Browning OU, which I shoot constantly along with the other 10 or 11 shotguns (lost count!!)

I'm not fighting a war, or planning to resist the Federales. My guns are golf clubs to me (recreational equipment) so I buy what I enjoy playing with.

That is just me. I won't argue with those who feel differently.

Do your bullets PING when they hit metal?

Buddy asked why anyone needs so many guns.
How many clubs are in those three bags of Pings you own, said I.
He knows I just own a 1 iron and my Mom's clubs.

A few years later he told me that his eldest son has a vault room and a reloading room.
No guns with wine/beer, just axe throwing and Bocce.
I sent his son some Italian flag grips, from the late seventies, for his 1911 collection but as of yesterday he has no wheel guns.
Sad but true.

This Winter, when they're down here, it'll be a 460 fest and fishing the Keys, as last Winter was a bit Covid.

No, don't go giving up your rifles.

Watch the news, bad guys are wearing body armor on a more consistent basis. Most of them don't know the difference between NIJ IIA, III, IIIA, and IV.

Most of them get whats cheap, and easy to wear (aka light). Most want something that will hide under a hoodie - most rifle plates won't; they are bulky, heavy, and stick out like a sore thumb.

A rifle will punch right through most soft armor. An AR rifle stopped the Sutherland Springs shooter with one round, through his body armor.

I think I'll keep a rifle handy....maybe even a pistol chambered in a rifle caliber and/or SBR

Or practice head shots, in the dark, while moving, while the suspect moves, while being fired upon - good luck. IBTL.

This guy has everyone at each others throats. I'd say that if he isn't a troll he certainly is doing a pretty good job imitating one.
Y'all simmer down.....do what I do-pour a drink and go sit under the backyard oak tree.

I live in a rural area, fairly well off the public street. Sheriff's Department response would run about 10--15 minutes, on a quiet night. Should a carload of multiple assailants make the trip up my long driveway, I want my M4 here to protect my family. The Second Amendment is not limited to hunting privileges, despite Biden's mischaracterization. Rifles and handguns are constitutionally protected for our individual safety and the nation's security.
