Call Smith & Wesson to get setup to ship the gun to them.
When repairs are finshed, they can send it back to your address.

I recently just went through repairs with S&W for my 5906, was experiencing a lot of Failure-to-Fires. I called up and they sent me a letter and prepaid UPS 2nd Day Air label. Packaged my gun and called the UPS number listed on the letter from S&W. Also wrote a small note to explain the problem. UPS picked up package from my home on 5/14, and it arrived at S&W on 5/15. They shipped my package back to me on 5/26 and it arrived yesterday to my house. So 7 business days from the date it arrived at S&W to when it arrived at my home--not counting the holiday.

when s&w sent it back to you, ischia,
(nice handle, btw) did you have to be
there to sign for the ups delivery?

or can it just be left at your addy?
(actually not too crazy about that
option)

i ask because i am not home when ups delivers
and i have to send in a s&w in for service
and would have to miss work to be home to
receive the delivery

i realize that ups can attempt a delivery
that needs signature and if you arent there
they will just leave a note and you can call, but it would still mean i have to be missing work to sign

just wondering and thanks in advance!

Actually they will not leave it at all. You would have set it up to pick it up at the UPS facility. But they're normaly open late during the week, or at least by me they are.

So it does not have to be shipped to a FFL address/holder after repairs? Why is this? It can be shipped directly to my home address then?Replacing an ejector rod and center pin on a model 35. I've talked to service at S&W and it seems S&W is keeping what few parts they may still have for this model to do in house repairs by their gunsmith. They didn't/wouldn't send the parts alone needed to me for an attempted repair locally.

Thanks for all the info,

Ischia

Ischia (cool name), the answer lies in the federal statute, 18 U.S.C. § 922. Read the whole thing and consult with a lawyer before acting on it, but this is the part that authorizes a company to return your gun directly to you:

(a) It shall be unlawful-- (2) for any importer, manufacturer, dealer, or collector licensed under the provisions of this chapter to ship or transport in interstate or foreign commerce any firearm to any person other than a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector, except that-- (A) this paragraph and subsection (b)(3) shall not be held to preclude a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector from returning a firearm or replacement firearm of the same kind and type to a person from whom it was received . . . .

And here's why you have to sign for it:

(f)(2) It shall be unlawful for any common or contract carrier to deliver in interstate or foreign commerce any firearm without obtaining written acknowledgement of receipt from the recipient of the package or other container in which there is a firearm.

Package the gun well using a plain box with the Smith & Wesson Customer Service address, and take it to a FedX hub-not Kinkos. Smith and Wesson will ship it back UPS. The UPS driver will leave a note saying when they will return if no one is home. Above 18 (I believe) signature is required. This process happens every day. You could use a FFL but not necessary.

Back in the 1990s I sent a Colt Python in to Colt for rebluing. They did the work and sent it back to me via UPS. UPS simply dropped it at my front door. No signature required. I was a bit concerned to see a revolver sitting in a box by my front door, unsupervised, when I got home from work. So are you saying that this no longer happens?

Welcome to the forum, Sir. I fear you've confused this discussion forum for the Smith & Wesson customer service department.

By the way, this is a thread that's been quiet for five years, so there's probably no need to answer the OP's Q at this point in time. And the original folks discussing the question might not respond to questions about their posts.
