I have a S&W 620 L Frame 357 with a 4" barrel. I am trying to find an affordable OWB holster. For me to carry this properly, it will need to ride high, tight to the body and be canted.

Anyone out there with an L frame, like a 686, who has a holster to recommend?

I have a Galco Concealable holster for my J Frames that would fill the bill perfectly, but they don't make it for an L frame.

Oh, I don't want a strap to hold the gun. Open topped please.

Thanks, Vic

I use a wild bill's fusion paddle for my N frame mountain gun. I also hade a holster made by FIST for my 386 nightguard that I really love.

Vic, is there a reason that IWB won't work? I have only ever carried L and N frame pistols as a full size gun ( I carry a full size gun whenever possible) and only IWB. If IWB is an option then I can help you. If not, I can only make SWAG (scientific wild *** guess) suggestions.

Flopshank,

I am taking a revolver class which requires OWB strong side holster.

If you have suggestions for IWB let me know as I can use them for carry at other times.

Vic,

Don't forget that man IWB holsters can be used OWB between the belt and the trousers. They often hide much better than dedicated OWB holsters and they leave you the option of carrying IWB if you day's pants are a little looser than some others.

That's the way I carry. I carry a snub, though. So I don't worry too much about the barrel showing below my sport jacket or suit coat. 4" barrel might put you in a different situation than me.

I use the FIST #19. It's a cut down version of their #20. Lots of pictures online under FIST.

I was just turned on to sideguard holsters by another forum member in my post OWB carry for j-frames. They make the holster you are looking for at a good price.

I make a couple of different OWB concealment holsters for your L-frame. Click on my user name and find my e-mail address in profile. Let me know if interested and I will send photos. Prices start at $39.

+1 on the Simply Rugged. It has become my all time favorite holster ... and it works both IWB and OWB! Absolutely the best, very comfortable, and very concealable.

I'm using a Milt Sparks Versa-Max II for my 5" N frame these days and it is excellent. When I carried L frames I used a FIST kydex/leather hybrid (the IWB model with the cant is the best) and a Mika (inexpensive, high quality and comfortable but collapses after the gun is drawn). I have never used a Don Hume holster, but they are reputed to be great for the money (and you can have the holster you want in a couple of days). Kramer, while more pricey than Hume, makes a great holster and might fit your needs nicely. Whatever you do, get a good belt. I use a dual layer bullhide belt by www.thebeltman.net . You will be better off with a cheap holster and a great belt than a top-notch holster and a flimsey belt.

Not trying to tell you what to do, but I would personally not consider a training class that did not allow me to carry my pistol the way I most often do: inside the waist.

While I have OWB holsters for almost all my handguns, I find it much more difficult to conceal without printing or bulging with them. So I carry IWB almost all the time, and that includes my N frames.

Wyatt,

I just found out I can use an IWB or OWB holster. I have an IWB on the way so I will see how that works out.
