What gun did you take with you for your ccw shooting test? I took an old S&W M13 357 magnum and fired 158 grain 38spl lead semi wadcutters for mine. I chose it because the revolver fits my hand well and I also thought it would be cool to go "old-school". I was easily the best shooter in my class in spite of carrying the low tech firearm.

The worst shooter was a gentleman shooting a Glock held sideways(at least until the instructor chewed him a new one). The guy wasn't even on the paper with half of his shots at 7 yards,

The second worse was a female "Naval Security Officer". She hit the paper most of the time but it was more a pattern than a group. She also had the worst attitude in the class and she went ballistic when she found out they didn't give you your permit on the spot.

What did you rely on?

Since I always copy off the guy next to me in tests, I used his gun.

I used a Model 19 (Thanks Dad) and shot 38 Spl out of it. Fun to shoot and it is a lot more accurate than I am.

I qualified with a Smith & Wesson nickel 586 with .38s in it. The guy two lanes over was throwing patterns with his plastic fantastic. At one point I saw him look down at his pistol, look over at my revolver in bewilderment, then back at his pistol. I think the light may have went on in his head. Just because revolvers aren't trendy does not mean they are archaic and ineffective. Another guy in my class, a Navy vet, was taking the class with his wife. When the class was over several of us continued shooting for fun. Him being a macho kind of guy I loaded my Taurus 605 with full power Remingtons, which he loved. Then I loaded the same gun with .38s and let his wife try it. They hadn't been considering a revolver for her, but she liked it so much that the next time I saw them at the range she had her own model 60.

The last firing CCW qualification I did, I was shooting a 686 in IDPA and shooting my reload .38. However, the only cheap factory (required) ammo I had on hand was UMC 9mm, so I grabbed that, a SW9VE and a Safariland holster.

The instructor complained that he could not score the target, since a baseball size piece was missing from the center. After thinking about it, he decided I must have passed.

So much for a Sigma being inaccurate and too difficult to shoot!!

Since Texas has two classes of CHL (SA and NSA) I did not use any of my revolvers. If you qualify semi-auto you can carry any type. If you qualify non semi-auto (revolver, etc) you cannot carry a semi-auto. Therefore, I used my Baikal commercial Makarov and surplus Soviet ammo. Not a single ftf or any other problems. Also you must use a 32 caliber or larger for the shooting portion.

State of Texas, if you test with a revolver you can only carry a revolver. If you shoot a semi-auto, you can carry either.

My new M&P 9. I was shooting one big hole so when the instructor came by and asked if I had shot the required number of rounds he said I could go. He was really busy with a couple of guys in the next 2 booths trying to get them to at least hit the paper.

I had an extremely good range session for mine. Our instructor used to teach at Gunsite and offered to stay for extra time if we wanted to learn from him and run through some drills. I used my Kimber stainless 5" to qualify with 230gr. FMJ. After I ran through the 250 rounds that I brought with me I switched over to my 5" 629 Classic with reloads. My reloads are 240gr. SWC at right around 1,000fps. It was all fun until we went to close quarter hip shooting. I set the target on fire with the muzzle blast.

My primary carry gun for a number of years (I have broadened my approach to include autos now) was my six inch Model 629. Back then the ideal loads tended to be Silvertips and Federal's lead hollow points. I used the lead hollow point load for my first qualification through that gun.

686-4 with 38's.
My future son-in-law used his 40 cal. Beretta. It's a nice gun but mine didn't jam like his did.

Ruger SP101 DAO with Black Hills 125gr JHP. I got several dirty looks from the others on the firing line after touching off ten of those on the indoor range.

6.5" Model 29, with light .44 Special target loads. Instructor asked if I was really going to carry it, and I told him not unless I found a decent ankle holster. He passed me anyway.

Colt Python, 4" barrel, firing .38 SPL 158 grain SWC (had the ammo on hand). Also a Springfield "Loaded" Champion in .45 ACP. Fired 100% with both (that's how they score for CWP qual here), but, then again, the course of fire was hardly challenging. It was amazing, though, to see how many people took the course that obviously had never fired a gun before, and had trouble even getting on the paper.

60LS with .38s. It wasn't scored. The instructor just wanted ensure the applicants had rudimentary safety training and he worked with the ones who needed it.

In Pennsylvania I didn't have to take any tests, either shooting or classroom stuff. They did not even contact my references.

I used my Walter P-1, such a fun gun to shoot. I just had some cheap 9mm rounds I bought from wally world, the P-1/P-38 isn't picky, it will shoot whatever you put in it...I wish I had it back I'm sure many of you have the same sensation about a gun in your past.

Beretta 92FS with WWB. That gun, (mine at least), is a laserbeam. Accurate as H*LL and reliable. Never jams or malfunctions.

The trigger is sweet too, at least in SA mode.

What can I say, I dig Berettas.

Beretta .22 with whatever .22 reloads the range provided us.

From there, went to the Sigma SW9VE, then on to the smaller Kahr CW9.

What Test??? The State of Washington began granting a License to Carry a Concealed Weapon back in about 1935. Personally, I think this is the way it should be. I'll agree that there are "some" people out there in the Gun World that truly shouldn't be allowed to carry concealed or by any other method but I have yet to find the person who should have the chance to tell me I'm not qualified. I believe the Right is a God given one and Only "HE" should be the Judge who says I can't for whatever reason.

A few years back; seems we had one our veru Vocal 'Right to Carry' AHs get stopped by the Metal Detector inside the State Capital building entrance. I don't know if he was searched or not but in those days you could simply refuse to be searched and would escorted out of the building.

Well, seems he had called some of the 'Media' who showed up or were already there and then this "B*tt Head" stood up on the State Capital steps and said something "Stupid" like 'The Sign ONLY says "NO FIREARMS ALLOWED" in the Capital building. I have a License to Carry a Concealed Weapon and I don't understand why I'm not being allowed in???'

I have no firearms on me but I was refused entrance. Well, then he proceeds to pull out some sort of "Rambo type" fighting knife from under his coat and declares very loudly he should be allowed to keep his 10 or 12 inch bladed knife while inside. I understand he also had some local legislator present - again on purpose. Well, he got to take his "Sword" into the Capital Building but before the week was out our Law had been changed to read "License to Carry Concealed Pistol"!!!

Oh Boy did this AH do all of us a wonderful service that day. A few Years later he was caught with a batch of Machine Guns and 'Conversion Kits' in his Gun Shop(he had an 01 FFL). He spent time in Federal Prison. By 'some' he is still considered to be a great champion of the 2rd Amendment here in our State. He seems to have dropped a be further "off the radar" since his attempt to get his 'Gun Rights' restored has been "denied" over and over again by the Courts.

Before the class I asked the instructor about simi or revo. Didn't matter. How about caliber? Didn't matter there either. So I used my 617 ten shot. His rules - not mine.....
Bested everyone in the class - Duh

I've got that Texas restriction on me too - semi-auto if you want to shoot everything, and at least .32.

So it was a M&P 9mm with UMC whatever they sell in the box of 250 at Academy.

Had a heck of a time getting my wife to tolerate the trigger. She normally shoots the Registered Magnum.

We don't have a formal qual. The instructor just needs to see that the person can be reasonably proficient and safe. I used my .22 Walther PP.

I used a Sig P229 .40. Even though the instructor said it wouldn't be a good idea to have a nice tight group to send off for filing...I couldn't help it

In Pennsylvania I didn't have to take any tests, either shooting or classroom stuff. They did not even contact my references.
People coming here from NJ & NY are totally flabbergasted. I had to have classroom instruction and a range test for VA and classroom for FL with a copy of my VA range certificate. My references here in PA were contacted but all I received from the Pike County sheriff was a form letter outlining common sense responsibilities.

I'm personally very glad I don't live in one of the States where you can "Qualify" with a .22 but it seems you're 'legal' to carry anything you want. This is one of the draw backs that I see to any testing requirements at all.

I used to "Qualify" LEOs and while they got to 'practice' with light target ammo they all had to actually "Qualify" with the same ammo that they would be carrying on the Streets!

I guess our State takes the "...shall not be infringed..." a bit more literally than some others. Because we also have Open Carry that doesn't require anything more than being a 'legal to own' citizen within this State.

What's the drawback?

If I take my driving test with a Ford Focus, should I be restricted from later purchasing a pickup truck to drive just because it's bigger?

Both my wife and I used a Colt Model 1911 .45 circa 1918 when we first participated in the Texas concealed carry course in the fall of 1995.

S&W 686 with 2 1/2" barrel. WWB 130 gr FMJs. Shot 100/100 with it! It is my fun gun at range and has a trigger like fine silk! Carry a 642 or 640 for EDC.

1911A1 .45ACP with red-dot sight. All shots in one (modest sized) hole at COM. Good fun gun, but it's not what I carry.

There's no firing test in VA, I just had to establish that I knew vaguely what end of a gun to point downrange.

In Michigan I had to qualify twice. The first time I used an old nickel plated Colt Army Special in .32-20. Ammunition was 100gr Remington green and yellow box fodder. Why did I use that? It amused me to have that old thing out there and shoot it alongside the H&Ks, Sigs, and Glocks. (I had the only revolver present if I recall correctly.)

The second time around, I just used a borrowed from the range Beretta 92 and 115 grain remanufactured FMJ ammo. I'd never fired that particular gun before, and still had no trouble with passing.
