Default Fanny/belly packs

I don't see many posts about wearing fanny packs for concealment. I bought and tried a DeSantis Nemesis but my S&W 642 wasn't very well concealed. Any thoughts on fanny packs or belly bands before I go out and buy new pants?

Get a SmartCarry. It's way better than a fannypack if your looking for something without carrying a holster on a belt. smartcarry.com is where you'll find this item. I wear elastic waist shorts all the time and it's perfect or at least it is for me. Everyone is different so you'll just have to try it.

I don't care for them as to me they just scream "gun"!! Having said that, I do use one while riding a bicycle. I ride a recumbant style bicycle and there really is no other good way to carry. I carry a S&W 340 M&P (.357 mag).

I carry a Rossi M68 or Charter Arms Bulldog in a leather fanny pack when it's hot. It's easy carry and someone with a pack around his or her waist screams "Walkman", not gun to me.

A fanny pack screams one of three things to me:

1) Gun

2) Horribly out of date

3) Light in the loafers

1. They are a good way to carry if that is the method that suits you best.

2. The whole 'they scream gun' is pretty much a non-factor and that concept is way overblown. It takes only a little bit of people observation while out in our society to see that you have to pretty much hit people upside the head to get their attention.

3. What if other carriers or leo notice the fanny pack? I don't care.

4. What if the bad guy notices the fanny pack and thinks there is a gun it, gets the "drop" on you and shoots you dead? You give bad guys waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much credit. From a practical real world perspective I no more believe in this concept than I do in #2.

5. Out of fashion? Again, nobody cares. The general public will not notice that you are 'out of fashion' simply because they don't know what your typical manner of dress is. If they should pass judgment on your fashion in a general manner because they believe your wardrobe is out of date, and you have problems with that. Well then you may need to get your self-esteem checked.

If the people who you are around on a daily basis think you are out of fashion when you start wearing a fanny pack, it will pass with time as the pack becomes part of 'you'. And again, if a person is worried about being 'in-fashion' to please others then there may be other problems in said persons life.

There is one caveat to this that I am aware of, and that is if the pack doesn't 'fit' in your particular business/work environment. For example, obviously I can't show up with a fanny pack hanging off my slacks when I wear a suit to business functions. However, for casual use or many work environments the fanny pack would work just fine if I choose to do so.

Though I elect not to use this carry method for comfort reasons, I do think the packs are a viable carry method and many of the supposed negatives are more internet legend than practical concerns.

Just make sure the pack:
- Holds your gun securely without shifting of the gun in the pack.
- Can present the gun in a reasonably fast fashion for the draw.
- Has a good heavy buckle and belt material.
- Is comfortable for you to wear.

Talking Where do I get one?

O.K., then where do I find a fanny-pack that will be suitable for this purpose (and I am NOT "light in the loafers" as an earlier poster had mentioned)? {the "?" relates to the entire sentence... not the parenthetical portion alone}... just wanted to get that "STRAIGHT!"

I purchased one designed to carry a gun. I will only use it when bicycling. In fact, their was an armed robbery of a walker on the bike path I use just days ago.

It all depends on the situation, as noted above, if you are out running, biking, or hiking, it fits in perfectly. If you are wearing a suit or other business dress, it stands out. As with all cases of concealed carry, it is what works best for you and where you spend your time.

And the fanny pack debate rages on! I did a modification of a Bagmaster belt pack which, for me, works quite well and avoids soe of the legitimate fanny pack criticisms.

The pic shows the backside of a BAGMASTER belt pack to which I have added some home made shoulder carry straps by means of 3' split rings. The pack can be worn using the clip alone; or with the belt loops; or the shoulder straps; or in any combination of the three fastening modes. Whatever suits your fancy! The result is a large pistol bag (I carry a full sized 1911) with room for a large pistol and other stuff as well. Very handy and effective and ends up NOT looking like a fanny pack but, nonetheless, serves the purpose quite well.

Yeah, I always wondered how and where He-men carry at the beach. Between the butt cheeks or in the bathing suit under the spare tire?

I've been using a fanny pack to cart all my **** (wallet, flashlight, Epi pen, cell phone, glasses, knife, change, etc.) like forever. Never thought of using it for CCW. Did not realize that all the world would ID me as packing heat. Heck just an hour ago I carried my fanny pack past a cop in a grocery store. If your theory is correct then he should have confronted me, eh?

Like many other I can't go the fanny pack. Perhaps living in S. Fla and seeing all the guys that have an "alternate lifestyle"

I do have a Bagmaster like above that carrys my HK USP 40 and spare clip. I don't feel as quite as "standout" with. Merely personal perference

I have two of these; one for a Glock Compact and one for a hammerless J frame. (My wife has since appropriated the J frame bag for herself.) It is one of the carry options I use that keeps me armed. The only thing I'm light in these days is the wallet.

I wear one in the summer months. Not always, but enough to recommend one. Mine is made by DeSantis. It's very high quality and holds the gun securely and has fast access. Like Wayne and others have said, it doesn't scream "gun". Look around, people are oblivious to their surroundings. No one will think twice. Go get one. It will not be your primary means of carry, but will come in very handy.

I love a fanny pack when I'm out walking, walking my dog, or going to a gun show, flea market, etc. I can carry my cell phone, gun, keys and a bottle of water. Personally, I don't care what it "screams". If it screams "gun", then maybe bg will think twice about me being his next victim. If it screams "out of date", hey, I'm not going to to a prom. If it screams "light in the loafers", hmmmm, nevermind that one. I find that no matter how I carry, most people's eyes don't make it down to my waist anyway.

I agree with Iron bar... if it wont fit in your pocket, strong side IWB or pancake is my recommendation. Leave the fanny pack at home.

I always figured in the "Plumber's Butt" regions, and then they just hope it doesn't get entangled in all of the hair when they go to draw it!

I use a fanny-pack a lot, during the summer, riding a bike, hiking, walking, etc. I don't have a dedicated gun pack, they are always black and, as others have said, scream "gun"!! Instead I have a couple of suitable Brand X cheapos that work fine, are of different colors, and don't look so obvious. If someone thinks I'm "light in the loafers", that's his problem, let them think whatever they want, it makes me no less secure nor well-armed.

It's funny that men in this culture do not have anything similar to a purse for all of the **** that they often find themselves needing, but never having, because they don't have anyplace to put it.

When I was in college years ago all the guys had book bags slung over their shoulders, and along with their books they would have chapstick, hand lotion (I went to school in the Berkshires - believe me, in the winter your hands would crack until they bled), gum, maybe a candy bar or protein bar, cell phone (nowadays, not back then), couple of paperback novels or magazines that you're in the middle of reading, bunch of spare change, Swiss Army Knife... I put the same **** in my Lands End briefcase, which, let's face it, is basically functioning as a purse, only we don't call it that, so it's OK. But, that's for work. Who wants to schlep a briefcase around when you're in jeans and a t-shirt?

Just not sure why it is that having a sack to put your **** into must mean that you are light in the loafers. I accept and agree that in this culture it DOES in some places mean that (though around here, it just means that you belong to the AARP)... it's just a shame that a guy can't have a sack to put his **** into without running headlong into a bunch of silly cultural rules that make no sense.

London Bridge Trading Company current model is 1528A. I have the previous model. The new model was made a little larger to carry the M9. The previous model was 1911 or smaller. That's about 90% of the time I carry. Shoulder holster once or twice a year. Open carry about once a month.

I carry one of the Tommy GunPacks when I go for my morning runs. I carry a pistol, extra ammo, cell phone, keys and gloves in winter.

It holds the gun securely and rips open for immediate access.

I am too old to give a damn what anybody thinks and it helps to keep me safe so I will keep on keeping on.

Man bags are actually more common among younger guys.. and as long as the rest of you doesn't look.... light in the loafers as you've all been saying (love that expression, by the way) it's totally acceptable.

There's a certain way you have to wear it too... over the head with the strap going across your chest, not over one shoulder. the bag also had to sit on more of your back hip........

My GF got me one.. which... I don't use. Maybe when I start school in the fall (might as well use that GI bill!)

Man stuff aside, I can care less what anyone thinks-only the woman in my life. Macho B.S. and the like, I assume you are in or were in the USAF. You are aware that the US Marines, Army and Navy prohibits the use of umbrellas by men-the Air Force does not. The Air Force men are probably smarter and certainly dryer. I've met "gay" men that are boxers, body builders and athletes. I've met "straight " guys who are feminine, so what is "light in the loafers"? Life is way too short to care what anyone else thinks. If you're in a situation where a belt "purse" is the only way to carry (beach, 100 degree weather, etc.), it's better than going unarmed and if it screams out "gun", at least you have a gun.

Default Man Purse

I think I can respect the "Man Purse" more if it is something like a Fat Boy Versipak from Maxpedition... much less girly than the fanny pack, and a lot more comfortable than the plumbers crack carry method!!!

I guess if ya want to get some attention on the beach you could always drop a 44 hawg leg down the front of your Speedos. Don't have to worry about the purse-look and the interior decorators hitting on you then.

I use one all the time. I can carry my Sig .45, a spare mag, my creds, badge, and a pen and notebook. I clip my Blackberry to the strap and I'm good to go. As has been previously noted, the whole "screams gun" thing is overblown. I'm sure you could wear a black nylon fanny pack, a 5.11 vest, 5.11 tactical pants, a Glock hat, and a Thunder Ranch T-shirt and 99.99% of the population would have no more clue that you're carrying a gun than if you were wearing an Obama 08 shirt and Earth Shoes (remember those?).

Also, I don't mind being out of date, and at my age and weight if someone thought I was light in the loafers I'd take it as a compliment.

I love a fanny pack when I am out in the woods or hunting because it protects my handgun and it hides it if I happen to go somewhere else where I don't want it to be seen.
I VERY rarely see anyone wear one in public around these parts however I'm seeing more and more of the neoprene "sports" type fanny packs that also hold a water bottle. Those look very comfortable and practical but could probably not carry a large gun.

Smile Man bag or man purse

During the 19th century and the ACW it was called a haversack. During WW2 it was called a musett bag. Nothing light in the loafers about that. Right now I'm trying to find a WW2 musett bag in good shape and you bet I will carry it.

Fanny packs are GREAT places to carry EVERYTHING but your gun.

Medication, spare glasses, odds and ends! It a modern possibles bag a frontier scout used to carry. You can carry a LOT.

I appreciate the Ladies purse now. It also frees up a lot of space in pockets or in jacket pockets to carry a holster or multiple guns.

Could you post a picture of you wearing your "Ladies purse?" We'd all love to see it.

(Sorry... just "messin'" with you. Don't get bent.) Re-read your post... second paragraph, second sentence: The reader is not sure what "It" actually is based on the previous dialogue... Is "It" a "Ladies purse" or a fanny pack???

Who uses a Walkman anymore? I bet some of the younger folks here don't even know what that is. These days people carry I pods for music, and they are about the size of a credit dard, so no need for a fanny pack with those.

I have a couple, one maroon and the other green, and wear them when I go to the beach on vacation. Neither "scream gun, " to anyone but a pro, so I don't care. They work well for me. I carry a Kahr P9 with 2 extra mags, a knife and a flashlight in the smaller, rectangular, maroon one (an Eagle, no longer made model), and a Glock 27 with the same extras, but only one spare mag in the larger, green one (a DeSantis).

No hernias. The whole kit weighs less than my usual, belt-mounted and pocketed carry gear that I wear every day.

If a fanny pack works for you, go to town.
I don't personally use one. Now; that doesn't mean I won't ever use one in the future.

There are so many carry systems that one need not be strapped (pun intended) to just one.

Try different ones and see what works.

I do have several friends who wear fanny packs and they're definitely not "light in the loafers", they dress in up-to-date fashion and don't give a rats behind if anyone thinks there is a gun in there.

So... use it if it works for you.

Best Regards,
Arkdweller

I've used one for almost 15 years and carry a Glock 21 (yeah, the really big one) in it most of the time. Sometimes a 4" N-frame. When I can wear a jacket I leave it at home. I do suggest one with a ZIPPER and not velcro. If you wanted to get your gun out silently, there is no way to do that with velcro. I like being able to also carry my check book, keys, cell phone, extra knife, pen, notepad, etc.

On trips now I carry a Maxpedition Jumbo Versa Pack. It handles the "man purse" thing while still looking rugged. It holds a lot of survival junk, my camera, snacks, cigars, and water bottle, plus all the stuff mentioned above in the fanny pack. Plus the Glock, or what ever else you want to put in the holster compartment. It's pretty cool.

The only time someone really noticed the fanny packs (my wife had hers on, too) was on vacation in Colorado. When we paid with a travelers' check he asked if we just got back from vacation. He thought we were locals since fanny packs are as common as fannies out there. We said, "No, we're on vacation," and he looked surprised.

Screaming "GUN!" is a sad misconception.

I strongly recommend the Maxpedition Fat Boy Versipack, or Jumbo Versipack if you'll be travelling.

I use one often when travelling and doing the tourist thing.

They hold a ton, including a gun (hey, I rhymed)!

Maxpedition Versipack

Jumbo version

The Maxpedition Jumbo VersiPack is AWESOME! It's a shoulder bag big enough for all the esssentials, yet it is not overly large. I use mine whenever traveling as my carry on bag.

The Maxpedition Octa VersiPack is a fanny pack that rocks. Love to use it for walking, biking, etc.

Both have hidden weapon compartments. Both weapon compartments are zippered, not velcroed.

Highly recommend both.

I love all the concern about what somebody else will think about us if we use a fanny pack, etc. Guess that is the way we show our strong masculine side - by worrying about what some jerk thinks of what we are wearing!

fanny packs are almost an instant give away that you are carrying a gun. I do have one but now I use the Wilderness back pack with a carry strap. It blends in with the rest of the population carrying computers or electronic components. They come in all sizes and it is very sturdy. The pack has many functions and there is a place for an extra magazine and other accessories carried in the top flap. The sides are velcro and access to the firearm is quick and easy. Take a look on their web site for the video of the back pack. I know you will be sold.

Wow! This thread had been dormant since July 2009 and all of a sudden it pops back to life.

Default Fanny Packs

These things say, "I have a gun! Shoot me first!" This is especially true if worn with pants with pockets wherein there would be no need to have such a device to carry a wallet, etc. Having said that, I wear one every morning while in gym clothes on my way to my police department to work out and then start work.
