Default Leather magazine pouch for Glock mags...too damn tight!

The other day I decided to pull an "all-nighter" working in my welding shop...was there alone until about 3:30AM. It's in pretty much what's considered the WORST part of down, but I've never had any real trouble. I almost never go down there unarmed though.

During the day, I feel pretty comfortable with a J-frame .38. But, knowing that I was going to be down there late, I decided to pack a little "more". I loaded up two mags full of Winchester 115gr. Silvertip HP's for my Glock 19. I put one mag in the gun and the other one in a Galco SMC24B leather belt pouch.

Then, I tried to pull the mag OUT of the pouch...damn near impossible! I've had this leather pouch for a while, but really don't use it...it's like new. I knew it was tight...I've been storing a spare mag in it for months in hopes of stretching it out a little bit, but no go.

Any suggestions? Is there anything that I can put inside the pouch to help mags slide in and out easier?

Sometimes, "ya jus' gotta" carry 31 rounds!

Gordy

Put the mag inside a couple plastic sandwich bags and cram it into the puch and let it sit. That's how I stretched out my too-tight DeSantis leather holster.

Mitch Rosen markets some stuff called Leather Lightning or something like that, and maybe Galco does, too. Mitch's stuff costs thousands of dollars a gallon, but he sells it in tiny bottles for $10 or $15. Even as tiny as it is, a bottle will handle a lot of holsters. It works as advertised, slicking up the holster without stretching it.

I suck up the wait and buy Milt Sparks and don't have the problems. The last pouch and holster combo I had a problem with got tossed in a sink full of warm water with 20 Mule Team Borax until it was wet. Saran wrap carefully applied to the pistol and mags and into the leather they went. Let dry for 2-3 days and follow with a good wax job. Problem solved.

Hi:
I experienced the same problem with my leather magazine pouch, but mine was during qualifications. I now use a "Fobus" magazine pouch.

No advice on the leather, but you might want to add a BUG weakside if you are able.

It's amazing how safe one can live in seedy areas if proper protocols are in place.

Hi flop-shank,

Funny you should say that. I have a friend who is a Deputy Sheriff. He told me that he wouldn't go in that neighborhood unless he had two guns.

Do you mean weakside on my belt? Or an ankle holster? I'm ignorant about BUG's...never gave much thought to carrying one.

I take it there aren't any adjustment screws on the mag pouch? I picked up a Gould & Goodrich double for my 1911, and it was VERY tight at first. I put a couple loaded mags in and tightened the adjustment screws down as far as they'd go. A couple weeks later I backed them of a couple turns and the fit is about perfect.

For those that don't know Gordy's 'hood, I visited there to pick up my target stands last year. I kept the doors locked and the windows rolled up and felt the eyes most of the way there and back... the thumbstrap on my holster didn't get snapped closed again until I was back on the interstate heading home.

Wherever is comfortable for you - if you're carrying a Glock strongside, why not carry your J crossdraw weakside?

zerc,

No, no adjustment screws. It's riveted together. Maybe I'll see you tomorrow at RobO's party.

Try weakside front pocket with a J frame/SP-101/small auto (I sometimes use a P3AT in that capacity). You can nonchalantly put your hand in your front pocket and already have your gun in hand for a lightning fast draw. Gun #2 is also a fast reload, can be passed off to another person who needs one, be drawn if your strong hand is injured by gunfire/is tied up in a struggle, or save your bacon if your primary malfunctions, or is damaged by gunfire. Ankle carry might also work well if you spend a lot of time driving or seated.

There are nasty parts in every town, but Zercool makes the locale in question sound like the south side of Chicago. If locking car doors, business doors, being vigilant, never putting oneself in a corner ect. doesn't give you enough security, relocation might be the best tactic you can employ.

You could probably send it back to Galco and get it replaced. Otherwise, soak it in water, wrap a baggy around your Glock mag and mold it to fit.

I don't like Fobus products personally. Cheaply made and I've seen cracks develop in the plastic.

If you're really worried about the area, Galls or Zahal will be happy to sell you some soft body armor. It's easy to tuck a spare gun under the arm attached to the panel carrier.

ZerCool freely admits to being something of a country bumpkin and not entirely comfortable in cities to begin with... but I felt safer walking down the streets of Midtown Manhattan at 2am with no gun than I did driving down a side street near GMac's shop at 3pm. *shrug* Maybe I was paranoid, maybe not, but I was happy to be out of the area.

Posted via Mobile Device. My Glock mags need larger pouches than the S&W, Browning, or Sig mags I've used. I don't know about H&K mags... Did they sell you the wrong size pouch?
FWIW, I use Mernickle's double stack mag pouch for my Glock; his single stack mag pouches work fine for everything else I've tried.

I have had excellent results with KG 9 leather kote for leather holsters and mag pouches. You put some on your finger and rub it on the inside of the holster or mag pouch where the metal surfaces touch the leather. It is the only product that I know of that really works. One treatment lasts for years. Brownells has it :
BROWNELLS : World's Largest Supplier of Firearm Accessories, Gun Parts and Gunsmithing Tools

If the link doesn't work go to the Brownells website and put " leather kote " in the search box.

Could be wrong size pouch as someone else pointed out above, Glock mags are larger than say most double stack mags (Sig, Beretta, S&W, Browning). I use regular old silcone spray on the inside of most of my leather gear.

Glock magazines, expecially the old ones can get "fatter" when loaded. Consequently, an empty mag may fit a carrier just fine while a loaded one could be too tight. You might want to use a full mag to stretch the carrier or if it's REALLY tight, then use the plastic bag or similar method to strech it with a loaded mag.

Default Magazine pouch is too tight

As with the holster for a handgun, there are options:
[1] Soak the holster with neetsfoot oil.
[2] Soak the case or holster in warm water until it is soft and plyable. Put the magazine in a plastic bag and let it dry.
[3] Get a cloth magazine pouch.
[4] Go to a knife shop and get a folding knife pouch that fits the magazine.

Or you could use any one of a hundred types of spray silicone lube to lightly coat the inside of the pouch.

I have several Galco leather Glock magazine holders, they are typically tight when new. All you have to do is put a Glock magazine in it when not in use and let sit and it'll form to fit it all by itself. No oils, no water, no soaking, no baggies, no silicone lube, mink oil, . . . .

My solution is combination of two earlier suggestions. Stretch with plastic around mags and then use rosen leather lighting. Reapply rosen leather lighting occasionally and leave mags in pouch.
