Non-LEO. Most often if carrying a revolver, .38+P. If an auto, it'll be a .45acp 1911.
However, depending on the occasion, dress, social circumstances and requirements I have from time to time carried everything from a .25acp to a .45 Colt!

Glock 19 most of the time, but will do a M57 .41 Mag too.
Out in the boonies, it's one of the SA Blackhawks....44 Special, 44 Magnum or 41 Magnum.

I prefer a 105 Howitzer but settle on a Shield 9mm for conceal carry loaded with Gold Dot +P 124 grain short barrel.

I am not a LEO so pocket conceal is all I do.

LEO - have carried 38 Spec, 357 Mag, 9mm, 40, and 45 on and off duty. The 38 Spec was always a BUG. Currently back to 9mm because the 40 and 45 stir up the arthritis in my shooting hand faster and I still enjoying shooting more than caliber bragging rights.

Non-leo, I carry a 1911. Currently shopping for a .38 special as a BUG. Thinking about getting one of them new-fangled high capacity semi-automatics the media seems to be worried about lately.

I tend to enjoy a caliber that starts with a four when the weather cools and a 9mm polymer gun when the weather is warmer. Either way I prefer the constant company of a 360m&p with magnums.

When I was on duty, I carried S&W model 65,586,Glock 17 for a short while in the 80's went to a 1911 platform and stayed with it until I retired. BUG for all those years was a 442 and later a 642.Also carried a derringer in 45 colt as a last resort. The 642 and the derringer stay with me at all times today.

On duty, department issued 9mm SIG P-228.

Off duty whatever I desire, and it usually depends on the weather, dress & occasion.

Whatever the main battery is, it is always backed up by a .38 spl. S&W M-642 Airweight Centennial.

Carried a 1911 when I was in the job. These days it's either an M&P Shield 9mm or a S&W Model 36 J frame, 38spl+p.

Began my career in 1968 when revolvers ruled so a Colt Cobra was the ticket off-duty. Even when we transitioned to the semi auto I continued to carry a Model 38 when off and see no reason to change now. Current EDC is the Model 38 w/the +P FBI load. My Cobra is retired in the safe but gets an occasional range trip. Hope that helps, good luck.

During my career I carried a .357 for over half the time then we converted to the 9mm, then the .45 and finally the .40 but I always carried a j frame of some sort as a bug and off duty. First a M60, then a M640 and now a M642.

My department issues a Sig P226 in .40 cal. Inside my vest rides a Nickel plated and bobbed M37 loaded with Remington 125gr LSJHP.

Off duty, I carry a Sig P239 in .40 cal, a 2 1/2" M19, a M649, and a Ruger LCP in rotation with each other. The selection of the day depends on the clothing of the day.

Both my duty gun S&W 4566 and my off duty, 4513TSW, are 45 caliber pistols. Every agency in my jurisdiction, locally, has gone to 45's with the exception of the NCSHP and SBI.

I read about "LE agencies move back to 9mm..." but I'm not seeing it, here anyways.

I like the 45 acp. Good round that has a proven track record. I notice that agencies and units that have frequent contact with violent felons all choose pistols chambered for the 45 acp. I find that interesting.

That said, I'm not one of those "45 snobs". Shot placement is the most important factor in using handguns for self defense. Not caliber. Any caliber, 9mm or greater, will serve you well IF you are proficient with the use of the handgun chambered for it.

Buy a gun that fits your hand in a caliber that you can get fast accurate hits with and call it good. I did. And they happened to be 45 caliber pistols. Regards 18DAI

Interesting to see this thread revived as what I carry has changed. Shortly after my original post I switched from the Beretta to a S&W 1911 9mm Pro Series for work.
After an eye opening 9mm competition experience in June of 2010 I stopped carrying a 9mm on duty and switched to .45s for duty and most off duty carry.
These days my duty gun is a FNP45 Tactical and primary off duty is a Colt Commander, ammo is Winchester Ranger T 230gr JHP +P. The 9mm 360J is still my BUG and occasional off duty piece, ammo is still Federal 9BPLE.

LE: Currently Sig P229 .40 cal. loaded with 180 gr. Hydra Shok. Previous to the semi-auto transition, my duty carries were a 4 inch M686 and 2 1/2 inch M66, both loaded with 125 gr. JHP. I carried the M66 off duty back then.

Off Duty: Sig P239 .40 cal., M642 BUG, and/or NA Arms .22 mag. M66 Snubby is now my usual carry when I'm working outdoors or hiking.

I carried a .40 caliber beretta when I worked in uniform after we switched from revolvers but in detectives I carried a 442 .38 special which I have continued to carry every day since retiring. My son who is still an active leo carries a .45 springfield in uniform a mini .40 walther pps in detectives and a.38 special snub as a b/u.Off duty he carries the walther or the snub.

Retired LEO: Last issue weapon a Glock 23 40. My personal defense battery today is a Kahr CW45 with Night sight, it uses 1911 mags. The Kahr is a tossup with the S&W 640 Pro, and I carry a 38+P Buffalo Bore load in the 640.

18DAI is correct find a weapon that fits your hand and you shoot well. Find a range that rents handguns and try a few out. Buy one that you shoot well and is concealable.

Let's wake up an "old thread"...

Non-LEO, just a regular CC civilian but a Shield in .40S&W is my main EDC backed up by a M&P .380 bodyguard when going out for my walks & quick runs to the store... The Shield 40 is loaded up with Federal white box XM40HC 180gr. HST, Hornady critical defense for the .380.

With RARE exceptions, my duty weapon WAS my CCW weapon. They ran the gamut from G17s, G34s and G22s, to Walther P99s and full-sized 1911s. My BUGs were an S&W 442 and a SIG P230. Ammo was always the HOTTEST I could find.

Now, as a civie, my CCW weapons have run a similar gamut. Most recently these have been an STI Spartan IV 9MM, or an S&W SD9VE. I have recently acquired an LEO trade-in SW99 in 9MM to add to the mix. All are loaded with Liberty's 50gr. 'HALO' rounds.

I was a Cop for 35 years. I got to see a lot of people get shot or see'm after they had been shot. Based on what I saw I figured out that if you're shooting a bad guy and you happen to be either off duty or in plainclothes they aren't easier to stop than when you're on duty. I carried the same thing on or off duty. I'm retired now and carry either a M59 or a M5904 UNLESS I happen to go some place 'dressy', then I carry a Colt Single Action a .45 of course.
