Default Caliber for Concealed Carry or Duty Carry

What caliber do you guys carry primarily for your carry guns? I am also interested in hearing from LEO, do you carry of duty the same cal. as on duty?

(My dad is retired LE and he has always carried 9MM since the early 80's when they went to 9MM from 38 special.)

Carried 9mm on and off duty whilst a LEO. Now retired, I usually carry .38+P in a 60 or 642.

Be safe.

While Chief I carried a 1911 .45 for many years. I am retired and a reserve officer with my old dept. New Chief issues Glock 40 for duty. Off duty I carry a 337 Ti all the time. I prefer a .45 to a .40 and don't care for Glocks but thats what I was given to carry when I work.

Got my choice of .45 ACP in a 1911, .357 Magnum or .38 +P depending on the social occasion!

I prefer the .45.

No cop here. I carry a 340PD with .357 JHP bullets and a P-3AT with .380 Auto Power Ball ammo as a BUG. The Power Ball has the polymer ball in the end of the hollow point bullet for smooth feeding in a semi auto pistol. Works very well too.

As LEO...

Caliber/platform depended upon: Circumstances/situation/mission...and Agency P&P ...

U/C, Uniform, Plainclothes, SWAT and Off-Duty included: .22Mag, .380acp, .38Spl, 9mmP, .40S&W, .45acp, .357Mag, .41Mag, .44Mag...

As Retired LEO...

Caliber/platform dependent upon: Whatever I damned well please now ...

CCW/LEOSA includes: Same as above but added; .32acp, 9x18mm, 357Sig, 10mm, .45Colt...

But, 90%+ time since retiring: 357Sig, .45acp, 9mmP, .380acp in that order ...

Non-LEO, I carry either a Smith 66 snub, a Smith 19 snub, or my new favorite a Glock 29SF just because 10mm inspires lots of confidence.
Also a Smith Model 38

Retired LEO. I carried a 45 semiauto (S&W 4506, 4566 TSW) as a duty gun with a 640 (38 Spl.) as a BUG. Now I carry a Springfield XD 40 and/or my 640 as the situation calls for. Two is one, one is none. Old habits die hard.

Non LEO. Right now I carry 135 grn GDHP .357 mag in my 649 Bodyguard. I will switch off depending on what is available and what I want to rotate. I'm waiting on a couple of boxes of 158 gr LSWCHP in .38 special. Remington Golden Sabre 125 grn, .357 mag also shot well and I will not hesitate to carry that round again.

Not LEO, I carry .45 or .40 cal. semiauto. I carry a .45 99.9% of the time and just carry in .40 every once in awhile. The reason I like the semiauto is it's simple to reload and quick.

Former LEO, former military, current LEO of one sort, BUG is PM40 with extreme shock ammo, carry HK P2000 in 40 with, you guessed it, extreme shock ammo, Kimber CDP II, with what else, extreme shock ammo. Reduced recoil and much confidence in the stuff. Back up mags have Golden Sabres.

Not a Lawman. Carried my custom Colt Combat Commander interchangeable with my 696-1 for a long time. Now it's mostly a Kimber Tactical Ultra II. Loads were/are .45 ACP 185gr JHP or the 200gr WW Silvertip in the .44Spl.

.45ACP on and off duty. Duty mags will also fit my off duty gun (although they do not fit flush). Biggest advantage there is that I have a whole pile of extra mags just for the range!

.40 S&W for pistols, .38SPL+P for revolvers, .....maybe full house .357's if going into the woods or less desirable economically challenged areas where locals may have a propensity towards socially unacceptable behaivors.

Homemaker. Former slum lord. If you're going to be in a slum, might as well be the lord of it.

.357 Sig in a P229R plus one or two J frames in .38 special. Gold Dots in the Sig, Rem 125 gr +P in the .38s. (It's cheap and I have plenty, .38 hasn't been easy to find as of late and I ran out of Gold Dots and Rem FBI loads.)

Probably just going to return to carrying a full size 1911 again. I use FMJs since my Colt is only a bit younger than I am and I don't feel like having it tweaked.

Every now and again I carry my 629 4". It's loaded with conventional 240 gr full power loads. I miss my Model 58 sometimes, and it reminds me of it a bit. Shrug.

Glock 23 in .40 S&W on duty, BUG is a Walther PPK/S in .380. Off duty, depending on attire and activity, I carry my duty G23, PPK/S, S&W M65, or a Colt 1903.

If I was forced to pick only one handgun to carry, on duty and off, it would easily be the Glock 23.

Non-LEO. Usually Commander-sized 1911 .45 ACP or a .44 Mag or Spl. Occasionally, a .357 (just bought my first .357s in the last few months, but still a 4something kind of guy).

So the answer is ............ "anything you are comfortable with between .380 and .45"

I figured there wouldnt be a clear winner in this little survey. When I carried back in the old days I carried a 9mm 5906 in a Galco pancake holster.

Of course I lived in a state that allowed me to obtain a CCW at the time.

Good question, he texted me the other day. He was shopping for body armor and wanted advice on which model to get and where to get a vest that was also stab proof ala some models meant for corrections officers. Some of his tenants didn't appreciate him telling them not to smoke crack on the porch, so they said they'd stab him if they saw him again.

They never taught us about things like that in business school. I should write the Alumni association and suggest that they consider modifying the executive fitness requirement to allow credit for armed and unarmed combatives classes...

Default caliber concealed carry or duty carry

Retired LEO. On duty carried issue Glock 21 with Model 36-J backup. Off-duty carried Glock 19 or Model 36. Now carry Glock 19 in winter months and in summer(hot & very humid here) carry Model 36 or Ruger LCP. If I could only afford one of these for all-round use would be Glock 19. Fortunately can afford to have all of these along with S&W 66 no-dash, Colt 1911. May have others; not saying.

Maybe they didn't know you were from Lancing? They might offer extra credit for life experiences for people that lived in Lancing.

Former Sergeant, Army Military Police Corps (mid-1970s) - issued 1911 as uniformed patrolman and field MP, issued two inch Model 10 round butt later as Military Police Investigator (civilian clothes).

Best caliber to carry is the most effective one that you can shoot accurately and quickly. Believe more in suitability to task than comfort ("A gun should be comforting, not comfortable" - Clint Smith, Thunder Ranch).

Primary carry gun is a full size Colt Government Model 1911, but a much nicer one than Uncle Sam issued me. :-) Use Winchester Ranger RA45T (standard pressure, 230 grain JHP).

For times when the full size 1911 wouldn't work (like my wedding, where my tux trousers didn't have belt loops!), I carry a 638 (pre-lock) with Speer +P Gold Dot rounds in a Kramer pocket holster. Glock 19 truck gun, with Winchester Ranger +P+ ammo.
