It does seem that the heavier recoiling guns are causing the most "flagging"/lock-ups,yes? I have the "World's Lightest .44 Magnum" in my 4"bbl. 329;and when in bear country I want to load heavy bullets. How can I feel any confidence with that dangedole springy flag- thang inside my pop-gun!? It recoils like a VERY large dawg(pain). That bein said,I wouldn't trust my life to any revolver of any caliber with this or any other "internal lock" device. Nope. Wouldn't be prudent.
I agree with JohnD.

I have just bought a NIB 647 unfired 17HMR and was getting ready to do a minior clean & oil before taking the gun to the range and I will be damned if the gun didn't lock up with a ILF while is fondling the gun.

Being that this was to be just a range target gun and not even taken to the woods hunting I was going to leave the lock as I did on my 610-3 for that reason. But the lock failed before I could even shoot the gun, so I just removed the whole damn lock and made an oil hole. Since it will only be in a gun case to and from the range and not ever in a holster in the woods the hole should be no problem except looks. Will have to wait till something is figured to hide the hole.

I only have one S&W with a lock. It's a 638 which I carry pretty often. Next week I'm going to have the lock removed. I don't care if I have to put tape over the hole. I was planning to get another S&W, but after reading these 19 pages, the 4" Ruger Redhawk in .45 Colt will be my next purchase.

I'm afraid I'd screw something up. Most of my attempts at gunsmithing have been failures!

I'm in the same boat with Old Griz;I won't be taking the lock out myself. My S&W 1911 has a minor problem denting the bottom of the brass;some say I could fix the problem myself in 30 minutes by filing off something;it ain't gonna happen. I'll send it in for them to fix.
That way there's nothing I've done to forego any warranty etc.

i finally solved the IL problem , took both of the snubbies to my dealer and ordered a stainless ruger in 45 colt , not as small or light , but...
since its going to be a house and woods gun i think i can live with the weight...
no more Snark & Weasel revolvers for me , i've decided to cut my losses ...

I like the looks of both of those guns(Ruger Vaquero and Red Hawk). Thanks for the links.
Would I like them as much as my S&W 329PD with IL? Maybe. I've always wanted a short(er)bbl. single action cowboy revolver. I enjoyed shooting a 7.5"bbl Ruger Blackhawk(?) .45 Long Colt I used to have. It ALWAYS went boom;never a malfunction thru many rounds.

My newly bought 642 has the lock - it is not much of an issue for me. I bought the 642 after an unhappy experience with a 380 semi-auto which jammed with alarming regularity. Semi-auto owners have to deal with the issue of reliability much more seriously than wheel-gun owners. If a semi-auto fails to fire only 1 out of a 1000 rounds - that's considered really good. Does ILIF have a frequency higher than 1 in a 1000? My guess is its more like 1 in a 1,000,000 for a 642. I can live with that.

It goes about like this for me:
Odds of ever having to draw the gun - 1/200
Odds of having to fire it after drawing - 1/3
Odds of an ILIF failure when fired - 1/1,000,000

So the odds of an ILIF getting me killed are about 1/600,000,000 - or about the same as hitting the lottery.

But if I could buy the gun without it - you betcha I would. Its a stupid idea.

this was my whole point in getting the montado , its about as idiot-proof as a revolver can get without spending a ton of money ...
and 45 colt can discourage almost anything...
