I hang out at the candlepower.com forum occasionally where all the flashlight junkies talk about the latest and greatest flashlights. They ususally talk about expensive lights but there is a cheap light at Home Depot that is all the rage right now. It is a Husky tactical 2D cell aluminum LED light for under 25 bucks, and it is one heavy duty, wicked looking light. It is probably the ugliest flashlight I have ever seen(weird polished strike bezel), but man is it powerful! I compared it to my 3D Maglite with LED upgrade and the Husky blew it away. It will really reach out there and I used a Lowes $10 off coupon I got in the mail that was about to expire and Home Depot honored it, so for 15 bucks it is quite a flashlight(and club)!

Here is another LED light that is a fantastic performer. It **utterly** blows my Maglights out of the water. 30 bucks at Lowes. I have 3 of them. Runs on "C" batteries.

I keep forgetting to pick one of those up while in HD. The thing I like about this light is it uses D cells instead of C cells. I'd like to not have to stock C cells if possible. I wonder if I could find one of the coupons online... Hmmm

I saw these mentioned on the Sig forum and ordered two. They are very bright and cheap.

Here are some options for upgrading Maglites:

http://www.terraluxcorp.com/products/index.php

The LEDs are made by Cree which are suppose to be on of the best. I have found the AA version at Wal-Mart in the past. The TerralUX TLE-5EX is rated at 100 to 140 lumens and retains the focus capability. But they are not cheap at $24. Seems like I paid around $8 for mine at Wal-Mart.

http://www.led-replacement.com/tle-5ex.html

Check out the 500 lumen head for the 4 to 6 D-cell Maglite. Big Grin It's called the Bear's Butt in the Bear series of lights. Wink Big Grin You can never have too many flashlights. Wink

And yes...D-cells are much better with a capacity of 20.5 A-HR versus the C-cell's 8.35 A-HR.

Thanks for the heads up, I will most likely pick one up.

I am still having trouble with the fact that there is an entire forum dedicated to flashlights and excitement over "beamshots"! I wonder if there is a forum dedicated to paper shredders or can openers.

I reckon ya learn something new everyday.

I still struggle with the Bear 1050 lumen maglite based rechargable.....the struggle is justifying the $350....

still....1050 lumens in a cool handheld rechargeable....hmmm...maybe I don't ~need~ that next Smith I was eyeballing....

On Farmers recommendation I checked it out tonight (on company time, while picking up some programmable T-stats!).

And BTW Glitch, I also have the Lowe's C cell example you pictured, about two years now.

FWIW- That Husky 2 D cell LED is NO light weight!
It's about 1 3/4" in diameter at the (checkered) body. About 9" in length. With a 2 1/4" diameter lamp bezel.
It weighs somewhere between an L and an N frame. So, you wouldn't want to belt pack it.
BUT!!!
The S.O.B. has serration's around that 2 1/4" lamp bezel that resemble either a dull Ginsu, or a bread knife's scalloped edge! You could REALLY "F"" up somebody with that portion! And have it's weight assisting you in the activity.
It has four "anti-roll" nubs on the battery cap/tail cover, which have thoughtfully been provided with 90 degree edges. To make pressure point application on that end quite effective, also. Switching, is rubber booted MagLite style.
Best Part!
The things a friggin' FLAME THROWER!
Being a nocturnal creature anymore (5 years on nights) I can notice quite a difference in flashlights. One of these is going on either night stand at home. One in the car. And one in my tool bag @ work.
Like I said, it's a big, heavy, and medieval flash light. But it's bright as Hell, a weapon in it's own right and as cheap as one could reasonably expect.

THANKS Farmer!

Check out this new 5.11 flashlight.
It's not cheap, but the specifications look outstanding.

Thanks for the heads up. I read the link back to the forum and snagged the sku# and called the local Depot. 10 in stock. One for me and a couple for x-mas stuffing stockers.
Ho, ho, ho...

Well, out of 10, 3 passed St. Nick's rigid quality control assurance criteria.
It's an inexpensive, flame throwin', fightin' flashlight.
Two thumbs up, seal of approval and butt ugly as a cur dawg. Looks like part of transformers cartoon series. A light saber that no aspiring Jedi knight could afford to be w/o. I'm finding it hard to resist pointing it @ the ceiling while doing my best James Earl Jones, "Luke, I am your father."

It comes with some cheap batteries and will run for many hours on them but it is supposed to be a bit brighter with the expensive batteries. Are Duracells or Enerizers from Walmart the best batteries you can get?

There have been many battery tests on the various flashlight forums. You definitely want alkalines and my preference is Energizer or Ray-o-Vac.
