Adopted in 1895 and patterned after the Confederate Battle Flag, the "Crimson Cross of St. Andrew" is Alabama's flag. It can be square or rectangular but the red bars must be 6" wide.

Ask an American Indian what uncontrolled immigration did to his land and way of life. Then, think of your children and thier children's future!

I thought "Virtue" having a Janet Jackson-like wardrobe malfunction on the VA flag was cool. This is REALLY cool. Big Grin -Jim

The diamond on a red field represents the only place in North America where diamonds have been discovered and mined. The twenty-five white stars around the diamond show that Arkansas was the twenty-fifth state to join the Union. The blue star above the name represents that Arkansas was a member of the Confederate States during the Civil War. The three blue stars underneath represent Spain, France and the United States, countries that had earlier ruled the land that includes Arkansas, and signify that Arkansas was the third state created from the land obtained from the Louisiana Purchase.

Arkansas did not have a state flag until 1912, when a flag design contest was held to determine the state flag. The adoption of a state flag was prompted by a request from the Navy that they be presented with an Arkansas state flag to fly during the commissioning ceremony of the battleship USS Arkansas.

The female character is Sophia, or Wisdom, and the partially exposed breast is characteristic of women warriors who use a bow and arrows. Although my initial reaction was that your characterization was sacrilege; I recognized that I was reacting emotionally the same way I'd seen my church-mates react when an openly "gay" bishop was canonized.

That said, I recall having been taught by my grandmother (who never tired of reminded me that the flag flying over the United States Post Office was a sign of enemy occupation) that the motto meant, "Git your foot off my chest!".

This being the day after our celebration of the day when Virginia declared her independence from George III, I've got mine hanging off my garage right now.

Here is RI. I don't know how to get it to show up other than by this link. If someone can unscramble it so it shows, I would appreciate it.

Placed on a navy blue field is the seal and words "Commonwealth of Kentucky". The two people on the seal, a pioneer and a statesman, represent all the people. They are acting out the meaning of Kentucky's motto: "United We Stand; Divided We Fall". Sprays of goldenrod extend in a half circle around the picture.

I think our flag is lame. How much design thought went into a flag with a big red X on it? Sorry, my opinion.

California - Bear Flag

[IMG:left] [/IMG]

Historic Bear Flag raised at Sonoma on June 14, 1846, by a group of American settlers in revolt against Mexican rule. The flag was designed by William Todd on a piece of new unbleached cotton. The star imitated the lone star of Texas. A grizzly bear represented the many bears seen in the state. The word, "California Republic" was placed beneath the star and bear. It was adopted by the 1911 State Legislature as the State Flag.

I didn't know anyone actually noticed! Wink Big Grin

Most people haven't got a clue...even with all the "hub-bub" about the flag as to it's history and where it came from. Completely oblivious! It's a shame too!

Georgia history used to be mandatory in the 6th grade...I don't think it is today...I'm certain it would be "too political." Frowner

Andy,

I for one recognized it right off and enjoyed the thought of so many seeing it and not having a clue.
