I'm 42 years old. I clearly remember my dad putting out our American Flag next to our home's front door on the Fourth of July. He put it out on Memorial Day and a couple other days too.

Displaying the flag always seemed special to me and emphasized the specialness of the day.

Yesterday I took a walk up and down my block with our 11 year old daughter. We counted the number of homes displaying the American flag late in the afternoon (not early, where someone might not have had the time to put it out).

27 homes.
7 flags.

I'm very disappointed in my neighbors. Very.

I don't care what people's politics are, the American flag should fly from every home in the country on the Fourth of July.

I keep procrastinating about putting up a nice huge flagpole in our yard. When I woke up yesterday and saw what the kids were doing, I figured they were sending me a message...

Here is my dad with our flag. Big Grin

I know what you mean. Only 3, including ours, on our whole street.

Amazed me, and not in a good way.

I don't display a flag at my home, yet there is no way in hell anyone will tell me that I haven't done, and aren't doing, right by my country.

Thanks for opening the thread. I too am a bit disappointed. I responded in another about the lack of flags around my neighbor hood. During yesterday mornings hour walk around several streets (90-100 homes) I counted 18 flags/banners. I took a half hour walk last evening along a different route (40-50 homes) and counted anouther 18.
There are several homes displaying the seasonal banners (you know...the Easter, Spring, Thanksgiving type) but you would think these folks would put out Old Glory.
What's up with America!

Rob - Love the dog supervising, "OK, now you switch to the white chalk..." Big Grin

Mine was out there -- of course, it's always out there except when the Virginia flag is flying. I love our state flag.

I didn't, and its not a lack of patriotism. It rained all day, and I just refuse to put the flag up in a downpour. So we went to one of our sons homes to be miserable in the rain.

Rozes, No disrespect to your father, but the flag should be displayed with the blue field in the upper left while displayed in that manner. Wink
Best to you and family.

I've had a large flagpole since 911 - as I truly felt the patriotic pride in my heart back then. It was a reflection of what I felt as an American and proud of what my country stood for.

This was a natural thing for me to just spend over $1000 with out thinking of the cost in a heartbeat. To this day I don't regret the decision.

However, today I don't think about my flag flying each day in rain and snow and sunny days. Perhaps that is also the natural affect from the lack of pride that I have in so many of the things that have happened over the last 7+ years.

I still LOVE my country, but PROUD? no. I think that may be the difference. It's like having a child that you love more that life itself, and that child does something that neither you or he are very proud of. Your love for that child has not changed one bit, but you are hurt, disappointed and no longer as proud as you once were.

The GOOD thing is that pride can return, but you FIRST need to admit what happened, truly repent, and hold your head high once you are back on your two feet, and fight for ALL of the things that you were taught and believe in.

Perhaps there are more people out there like me, and right now they just don't feel the need to fly a flag right now.

Which is precisely why I do not fly a flag.

If you do, it must be properly lit if out after sunset. It must still be brought in in inclement whether. It must be replaced when soiled ot tattered. If not displayed overnight, it must be properly folded when it's off the staff.

I see more flags improperly dislayed at homes than properly displayed. If you are going to display a flag, display it right and raise it at the approprate time of day and bring it down at the appropriate time of the day. When not displayed, fold it properly.

You mean like this? This is the way he had it to begin with, and I thought it went the other way, so he switched it. Going to fix it right now. Sowwy! Confused
