I'm 61 and been watching my friends age. Looks like genetics and how you took care of yourself over the years play big roles.

Things I've seen that hurt have been a lack of physical fitness over time and smoking. Things that help are not worrying and an occasional drink. Having a good dog can't hurt, either.

How you look ain't nowhere near as important as how you feel. If you're feelin' good, you're doin great.

I feel like a 57 Chevy at a Street Rod Show. I have so many replacement parts that I will never wear out.

I used to get a lot of 'why bother' comments from friends and family over the years because I liked to stay reasonably fit. My primary concession to 'father time' so far is much shorter hair and being clean shaved instead of keeping a mustache because 'that gray old guy' in the mirror can't really be me. A short period of neglect now takes a larger toll than it used to, so I have to be a bit more dedicated to my exercise program. I am now thankful that I was more interested in bicycle racing and other physical activities than 'partying'. 'Father Time' will do us all in soon enough - why rush the process by failing to take care of your mind and body at least as well as you maintain your car?

A couple of years ago my mother celebrated her 80th birthday and I saw my three younger sisters for the first time in many years. It was shocking to see them all looking older than I do - now I don't feel so bad about the gray in my hair. Hearing about everybody's 'meds' was surprising, especially since I have nothing but aspirin and topical antibiotics in my medicine cabinet. The sad thing was hearing, "I wish I had listened to you about eating right and exercising..." I notice that their children are playing video games instead of leading a physically active life. They, despite being in their late twenties and early thirties, needed my help lifting and moving furniture; it is not a good thing when a young man who should be in his prime cannot lift as much as an official 'senior citizen'.

As a final thought, this being a gun enthusiast forum, staying reasonably strong and fit is beneficial to competitive shooters and hunters. The recoil of a lighter gun is less of an issue, the trigger feels lighter, a heavier gun is easier to hold in unsupported positions and to carry, one can move more rapidly between shooting boxes in 'action' shooting events and one covers more ground comfortably on the hunt. Self defense is much more likely to be successful with or without resorting to the firearm if one is both strong and fast (fit). The predators usually can sense the difference between unaware/weak, timid 'prey' and alert/strong, confident 'herd bulls'; in the event that they do experience a 'failure in the victim selection process', fitness and strength can combine with superior skill and awareness to foil the attack.

I'm going on 61 years old. When I get to feeling down about it I go to our range on a Wednesday morning. That's officially "Old Farts Day". A bunch of really nice old guys show up, and they usually call me "youngster". Smiler

Ya'll make me feel young, I'll be 50 in a few months. The last high school reunion, there were already a lot of empty seats for the departed. As my grandafather said on his 90th birthday,:"Getting old is not for pussies". Wink

I am a '57 model but still have my factory engine. Seems to have a bit of blow-by, noisy lifters, leaky seals, bad compression, and burns oil.

I turn 61 very soon. I tell myself that if there is anything I want to do that I better do it very soon as I may not be able to in the not to distant future.

Time is running out. It sucks but that is the way it is. Grin and bear it and have some fun between now and "then".

Went to my 65th class reunion in 2006. Some thoughtless person drug out our graduation pictures. Not saying we have aged but a stranger couldn't have matched any of us to our pictures.

Is you closing in on NINETY there, Dick? Nope, that'd be more like closing in on EIGHTY?

Hey, a "number" of years ago I came to the realization that I was no longer interested in how FAST my car would go but how FAR it would go. That's when I decided I was starting to get old! Turned 65 last April and still work'n, will probably have to do so until the day I die. Worse things can happen, like being retired and having to make do with Medicare!

Ultimately, it is the fate of every civilized man to know with(in) himself he can pretend bravery, and most likely, never have it truely called to test. Between a man and a (Cape) buffalo, there is no pretense.
