I have a question about selling to a California resident. I am from Illinois, What are their rules and regulations about transfering a gun into that state. I have read alot of threads and to me it seems tough for them to buy guns, any help in this matter would be most appreciated. Thanks, Ron

It depends on what kind of gun it is. For the most part D/A revolvers and semi-auto's have to be on the approved list. Single action revolvers are all legal and aren't even included on the list. Blackpowder guns can be sent directly to the buyer, no need to go through an FFL. No assault rifles, or rifles shotguns less than 18".

C&R guns are exempted from being on the list. Also, if the buyer is a LEO in CA then he/she can import off-list firearms.

IMO, the only way to be safe is don't do it. Their laws and regs. are so convoluted and confusing it isn't worth the legal risk.

Sad but but story. My family was in the nursery business for over 50 years until the business was sold a couple of years ago. We had developed a method of growing called the RPM, Root Pruning Method, http://www.fknursery.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/home.show.../pageID/18/index.htm we sold these world wide. My uncle told me several years ago that it was MUCH more difficult to sell these trees into CA than it was communist China. Seems they treat plants about the same as guns.

If the gun is on the CA DOJ Aproved list you are permitted to sell it to a CA resident. You must ship it to a licensed FFL.

If the gun is 50 years old or older you may sell it to a CA resident because it qualifies as a C&R. You must ship it to a licensed FFL.

If the gun is less than 50 years old but is on the C&R List anyway (some "collectible" guns are like this) you may sell it to a CA resident. You must ship it to a licensed FFL.

If the gun is less than 50 years old and not on the CA DOJ Aproved list you may NOT sell it to a CA resident UNLESS the CA resident is a law enforcement officer.

You may NOT sell ANY magazines that are capable of holding more than 10 rounds to any CA resident EXCEPT law enforcement officers.

It's really not that big of a pain for the out of state seller. There is no extra paperwork that you must do. Two of the last three guns I've purchased were from outside of CA (2 from forum members here). Follow those above guidelines and you'll be ok.

CA is very particular about it's agriculture, and the introduction of pests and plant fungus.
Especially the grape industry. We wouldn't want to see the wine industry distroyed now. No? Wink
