Anybody put the locator chip in your pets? Dogs, cats etc.

How does that work, one time charge for install?

What happens if your pet goes missing, what is the function of the chip. Does it just contain your contact info or can you actually track the animal?

we paid for a chip insert. It contains our data, the vet data and the dogs name. It is only 'found' if a wand is waved over it. Kind of like a metal detector.

Wayne,

My dogs are chipped. There is the fee for the "chipping" and a one-time registration fee for the service (e.g. "Home Again"). The chip has a serial number which can be read by instruments at the vets or animal shelters. When a call is placed to the 800 number of the service, the serial number is matched to the owner in the database and presumably the pet is reunited with its owner. The chip is passive and does not act like an active tracking tag.

Absolutely, too many bad things can happen even to pets who stay indoors. Our 17 year old is not chipped because the technology wasn't very good when he was young, next month a chip goes in. Our 4 1/2 year old is chipped. Animal Control has the reader as do most of our vets. IMO a tag on a collar is nice back up but the chip is primary.
We have to be concerned here about huricanes and chips are the only way that pets are going to be sorted out after fire, flood, or storm.

Our dog is chipped every time I have a snack... yesterday it was sour cream and onion, today it was cool ranch dorito...

I'm sorry, I couldn't help it.

It's interesting technology, but not all vets or shelters are going to have the readers and so forth.

That all sounds fine, but how many shelters and vets across the country have the wand and reader? How about non metro areas?

Ours are chipped. Time you get a dog through all the ordinary costs you've got a small fortune in them so don't stop short on a fairly cheap insurance policy against loss.

The city of San Antonio now requires all dogs and cats to be "chipped." They no longer charge a city $5 license fee and vaccinations are on the honor system.

The vet charged me $65 to do it and register my 14 year old dog. The city would have done it for $16, but they don't do it very often and I didn't want to wait in line.

I chipped my cat once. Only because I couldn't grab the driver fast enough.

We got our dog Kayla from the pound and they don't release an animal without neutering and a chip.

I'm ambivalent about chips, but I suppose it's a worthy thing if a dog is lost. Thing is, she's never outside of our control, but I suppose it pays to plan ahead.

Al,

It'd cost a fortune chipping all those pet armadillos! Wink
