It is with great sadness that I inform you all that Izuko-san passed away early this morning.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.

It has been a comfort to have friends here.

I thank you, and my wife's family thanks you.

Best,

Michael

------------------------------------------------
Greetings all,

I've never been one who likes to spill his guts out on a public forum, however, I have reached a point where I would like to call upon my good friends that I know here and also to my fellow forum members who may not know me for some help.

On Friday, August 22nd, around 9:00 AM PST, my wife's mother, her name is Izuko (pronounced EE-ZOO-KO) was hit by a van while walking across the street. She suffered a severe head injury to the right side of her head, a broken hip, and broken ribs. She has been unconscious since the accident. We received word about 11:00 PM on Friday night, and needless to say, it's been very difficult since. My wife and I were up all that night getting her packed and arranging travel to Japan. I am thankful that I was able to get my wife to the airport about 7:30 AM on Saturday, the 23rd to get on plane to San Francisco and then another to Japan.

Since my wife left, I have received word that Izuko was taken from the scene of the accident via helicopter to one of the best hospitals in the area where my wife's family lives, a town called Odawara. Apparently, Izuko lost so much blood that the Doctors could not operate until she was stabilized. Thankfully, she did stabilize enough so that the Doctors could operate to stop the internal bleeding in her skull. I'm told that she was in surgery for over 6 hours.

Prior to surgery, Izuko was not expected to survive, however, my wife has informed me that the Doctors are now giving her a 50/50 chance of recovery. If the swelling in her brain continues to go down over the next few days, Izuko will have a fighting chance. If things do not improve we could lose her. The Doctors have said that her post-surgery vitals are strong and a CAT scan has revealed that circulation within her skull is almost back to normal.

I cannot express how much pain it has been for me to see my wife so devastated, to have her collapse in my arms was surreal. It's been over a day since my wife left, and to be here in California, not being able to do anything to help, well, the feeling of helplessness is awful. I wanted to go with my wife, but after discussing it, we decided that it would be best for her to go ahead first, as my Japanese is very basic and that she would have enough on her plate upon arrival. I may fly there later, but my hope and prayer is that my presence will not be needed for any formality.

My Mother-in-law, Izuko, is one of the kindest and most giving human beings I have ever had the privilege of knowing in my entire life. She has treated me with the greatest respect and openly accepted me as her son; she is more than any man could hope for in a Mother-in-law. Izuko is 60 years young and she and my Father-in-law Kaz, have had tough go in this life; they have never had things easy. After so much struggle, they were just barely able to retire less than a year ago. After all they have been through, and now to have this happen, it is unspeakably sad. I lack the words.

I humbly ask my fellow forum members to pray for Izuko's recovery. The next few days will be crucial. From the bottom of my heart, I would appreciate any prayers, positive thoughts, or well wishes for Izuko.

I humbly thank you and I will update the group as I learn more. I hope to hear again from my wife again sometime after midnight.

Thank you so very much.

Michael

I can empathize with your feeling of helplessness being apart from your wife, your wife being there to help her mother and her father while also having her mother in critical condition, and your father-in-law having his wife in critical condition in the hospital, and your mother-in-law fighting for her life. One loved one in the hospital can pull so many in the family in so many different directions.

Prayers sent for strength and comfort for you, your wife, Kaz, and Izuko.
