Charlie Sherrill's latest account reminds me of
a LEO I am privileged to know. Big Man, who weighs in at 440 lbs, can and does move with suprising agility and speed. Recently while on his normal night hours patrol, four ten-hour shifts, he was stopped by a elderly rural gentleman who expressed his concern that his son, "Junior", had fallen in with "bad company", and was now spending a lot of time in a trailer further back in the woods. Big Man said he would look into it, and drove to the spot, a clearing once made by an oil company, but now abandoned, except for a newly-located mobile home. Big Man called out to Junior and told him to come out. After a few minutes, a scroungy looking girl came out. She admitted to Big Man that yes, Junior was inside, and he was busy "cookin meth", and could not be bothered. Big Man told her to lie down by his cruiser and handcuffed her. She did, and he started calling out to Junior again. Junior did not appear, but a newcomer came out. Big Man told him to lie down, which he did. Big Man did not have another set of cuffs, so he used a plastic tie to secure the newcomer's hands behind his back. Big Man again called out to Junior, but no Junior appeared, just another newcomer. Big Man made lie face down also, and tied his hands. He then called out Junior, come out or I'm coming in. Junior came out and Big Man dealt with him in the same manner as the first three. Big Man then realized that he had no more handcuffs, or plastic ties, and that he better call for back-up. In the 30 minutes or so it took for back-up to arrive, Big Man maintained armed surveillance of the mobile home, just in case there were more people inside. Big Man's normal method of stopping a fleeing suspect was to throw his big, thee cell flashlight at him. However, he tells me he has "up-graded" himself, and had gotten a Taser. Four months or so ago, Big Man, and his girl friend, a charming young lady indeed, were rear-ended by a itinerant teen ager from Mississippi, who had no insurance coverage. Their car was totalled, and Big Man, almost died, although his girlfriend, now his spouse, was not hurt. He was unable to work as a Deputy for at least three months. During this time, he asked me, in his normal serious, polite way, if I would find the intinerant Mississippi teenager who had fled the state, and "make him pay" for his actions. I told Big Man I did not do that sort of work anymore, at least not in the US, but sympathized with his desire for retribution. Big Man is now back on his normal night time schedule, and recently apprehended a would-be murderer and child assailant. I am proud to say Big Man and his new spouse are my friends. RKO |

Surprisingly candid answer! Also surprising that they did not vacate the trailer via its rear door / rear windows. I'm guessing all were really stoned. ______________________________________________________________________________ In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is. |
