I beg to differ. I have two 3" Kimber 1911s. A CDP Ultra and an Ultra Elite, and they reliably eat anything I feed them.

+1 for the Kimber. My Ultra Carry II jammed once the first day at the range. It hasn't malfunctioned with anything in the 2000+ rounds since. Smiler

My Kimber Stainless II ,which I've owned for about 6 years has gobbled up anything and everything I feed it,I sent it back to Kimber after purchasing it and had Meprolites installed, ambi.safety and a match barrel,I've never had the first problem with any type of malfunctions,it reliably feeds any type of fodder I feed it whether it be handloads or factory,BlackHills redbox 230 grain Golddot loading is by far the most accurate standard pressure load I've shot out of it,then 230 grain Hydrashok,+p 230 Win SXT(Ranger),hardball IMI 230s(A+)then my handload of 7.3 grains of Unique under the the 230 grain Golddot.

Same for me. Ultra CDP II, and it's never tied up since it was new. Stay away from any with outside extractors, though. Kimber learned the hard way that John Browning knew more about it than they did.

My everyday carry is a Glock 30 in 45acp. It has around 2000 rounds through it and it doesn't mater what kind, so long as it says 45 on the box. The gun is factory stock and I could not be happier with it. I did have several Springfields that I got rid of because of feeding, function problems that others here are enjoying. Go with Glock goodness and you well have a weapon that works. Captain Hornet

+1 on that. My P220 is without question the most reliable and accurate auto I own. Matter of fact, If the shit ever hit the fan big time, it would be the pistol I would grab first.

ok..promised an update. Per my gunsmith's request I grabbed a box of Federal's cheap Independance brand ball ammo yesterday. 230gr.
Nothing particularly notable about the ammo, other than maybe the coloration of the brass was very inconsistent compared to the consistency of say the Wally World white box Winny. To my eyes the casings look to be the same in terms of lip to grab for the extrator etc.
However, I ran through a box of 50 Independance with only one jam and that was related to the extended 10rd mag I was also testing..trying all possible combinations of springfield 6rd stock, kimber 7rd aftermarket, etc. the gun ran basically flawlessly with this ammo. I then loaded up some white box winchester 230gr. 50% jammomatic !
I then tried a mag of wolf 230g. First round spent case failed to extract, jammed so bad I had to work to get the mag to fall free, couldn't shake the spent casing loose from the barrel, reracked the slide and it grabbed the case ok. I unloaded the balance of the wolf and will donate it to someone else in the hood. mind you, before the recent extractor adjustment I never had this problem, but the wolf would not feed well..there's a happy medium i'm sure but it'll mean more time and money at the shop and the smith didn't sound like he'd ever have success making it eat everything. He expects this gun will fuss in one way or another, but suggested that at the moment it is reliable with good quality carry rounds like the Speer gold dot, federal hydrashocks, and is happy with the independance range ammo. I'm prepared to compromise on this in that I don't blow a ton of ammo through this carry gun so the delat in price between the winchester white box and what i've got to pay for the independance isn't a wallet breaker.
But tell me why what appears to be basically the same round of cheap ball ammo can make such a difference?!
ok..whining over.. I've got 2 other pistols that eat everything so I own't complain..just a learning lesson for me on this one. I still reallylike this 1911compact, will continue to work with it as a carry option and practice my point aiming. If nothing else I'm learning a lot more in the process...no, i don't want to learn about reliability in the heat of an actual defense moment...hold the sermons please.. I'm with you there. In the mean time my primary carry guns are proven. At some point, this one will be also, or it will show up on gunbroker..with a huge honest disclaimer.

You've got a ported short tube. Higher velocity rounds seem to work a lot better than the underpowered ones. Makes sense to me.

Independence is pretty peppy. Made in Brazil from ATK components.

A variable rate or lighter recoil spring would likely improve reliabilty with the lighter loads. Have you tried +P loadings?

Truth is Ed,
Some will run well out of the box, some run well after relatively inexpensive tweaking, a few will run OK after expensive work, and alas, a tiny minority will always be finicky. My Ultra CDP I described earlier, was extremely sensitive to it's magazines, bullet profile (230 Hydro-shocks for her), but the most surprising of all was that she hugely prefers running "dry" of lubricant. Once all of the idiosyncrasies and their causes were detected, I wasted less time trying to correct them. Instead concentrating on what would run, and massaging within it's limitations. Trouble is, it's not the same set of causes for each gun.

I was warned against using the extended 10 round magazines in my compact 1911's because of the lack of a magazine stop. That said, I have used them with great care at the range bench only. Have you ever shot it over a chrono to compare it with a non-ported 3"?

I hate it when that happens Big Grin Not laughing at you Ed but with you. I've been down that same path more than once. If it were me, I'd do a clean break and move it on down the road and save the heartache because not only is it a "high priced lil hooker", it's also like a cheating wife and you will always have your doubts regardless of how much you work on it.

LOL...thanks G17...and a sincere thanks to all ya'll (that's southern speak).
I made a second visit to my backyard range yesterday and went through another box of 50 of the independence brand. using only the springfield factor 6rd mag and a kimber 7rd. Had zero failures in 50. then also dumped another box of speer gold dot 45plus p through it again without failure. so at the moment, I'm treating it as a reliable gun but will continue to take it to range dates only for a good 300-500 rds. then if she behaves herself, she might get to go out some place nice.
and Henry, your point is well taken about faster rounds. I'll be looking for good bulk deals now on federal I guess.
thanks all...Ed
