In 1964 an old timer CPO in the Navy told me that we need not worry about the Russians but keep our eye on the Chinese..I laughed at him then..but remember his cold words from way back when..and the only good thing about the Chinese is that they do things in great numbers..they attack in great numbers..as in Korea..perform in great numbers..as in the Olympics..and congregate in great numbers..such as their large cities..so a well placed nuke or two will eliminate the treat if it comes down to it..at least we are prepared because individual's in the U.S. strive for survival..with the exception of New Orleans..just my .02..all5x

I didn't watch much of the Olympics. It should have been the world's best amateur athletes competing against each other. Allowing professionals and not enforcing the rules (age limits, etc.) cheapened it for me. We have an opportunity to develop a working relationship with China. If we are successful it will go a long way towards future peace and prosperity in the world. If we fail then the future becomes much more uncertain. I hope that we are successful.

I think the Chinese did a wonderful job and put on a wonderful show. As an American, I thought that it was pretty scary show overall.

Anyone want to say that --
-- the Chinese aren't creative,
-- the Chinese are only capable of simple manufacturing tasks,
-- the Chinese aren't a sophisticated culture?

If your kids or grandkids aren't throwing themselves full-tilt into their studies, aren't throwing themselves full-tilt into creative endeavors and entrepreneurial ventures, and aren't getting the values of thrift, savings, and perserverence, they are going to be in trouble. China and India are only gaining momentum.

You know what, I really got tired of the "alibing & whining" from the the American side. Poor gymnastic performance translated into "gee, we can't compete with kids", and dropped batons in both relays: "gee, we didn't have our team long enough to practice". Like, gee, handoffs are HS track 101...Anyway, give the Chinese their due for putting on a good show..Speaking of shacks, when is the last time you visited the Southside of Chicago and any other major city...Take away Phelps individual performance, we would have finished 4th...
When we lost in Water Polo to the magnificent Hungarians, "gee, we just had college kids and they had a Nat'l team", but yet when we won the Basketball game, we had the cream of the NBA and not a word is said...

Except that with gymnastics, using younger (ie, undeveloped) girls increases the probability of success in the event.

Opening and closing ceremonies were truly impressive, to say the least (this coming from someone who has judged visual pagentry groups for the last twenty-five years), but being an early boomer (DOB 1947) and living through the Cold War, the underlying, subliminal vibe that I got from these productions was "We've got so many damn people, we can do anything that we want, and you can't do anything about it!." They're still the ChiComs to me.

Totalitarian states look great on TV because they control the media 100%. The Nazis put on a hell of a show in 1936.

Chinese show I remember the best:
