Why not capitalize on the popularity of the M&P by offering it in .22LR as well? Several versions would be appealing. Make it identical to the full size with 17 round mags for training. 25 or 30 round mags should be possible for a fun gun. Shrink it to a subcompact for a modern-day version of the 2214.

Unfortunatly its not that easy to offer more rounds. When you start to go past 10rds of 22lr the rounds start to form a banana shape when they lay on top of each other.. the more rounds you add the longer the banana gets .. so you'd have to devise some way for a curved mag to work in a pistol grip.
Now if you could get one of those 50rd rotary mags to work and have the rotary part sticking out of the bottom that would be nice.

S&W already did that!!! It was the Model 45. I have one. It came with fixed sights. Look it up in the various reference books.
Sig is making .22lr conversions or uppers for the 220,226 and 229. CZ makes their Kadet 22 conversion and the option of selling it as a complete pistol. I believe a company called Advantage Arms already makes the 22lr conversion for Glocks but they are hard to get a hold of.
S&W would be wise to at least consider a 22lr conversion for the M&P especially with the rising cost of ammo!! It would be great to be able to shoot 22lr though the same pistol with the same controls I use for home protection or concealed carry.
If S&W offered a conversion kit I would definitely buy an M&P 9 over a Glock 17 both of which I have been considering as my next pistol purchase.

Back in the day a gun-show deal got me a Colt .22 conversion for my Colt Gold Cup .45acp. It was a "Thousand-dollar .22" when only the Korth cost more. Heavy, super-accurate, fun to shoot, and CHEAP. Cenier is probably making a fortune, but keeps quiet so the big boys won't steal his thunder. Way to go, Jonathan Arthur!

Don't see why S&W shouldn't get a taste of the 22 market. CZ and Beretta have offered factory 22 kits and there are several after market 22 kit makers.

Remember that SW owns Walther. Their piece of the .22 market is the Walther P22. Why reinvent the M&P and incur added expense only to rob Peter to pay Paul?
