I found an old thread about a guy who was pretty obsessed in getting a shoulder rig exactly like the one Harry Callahan wore in the series to carry the 6 1/2" Barreled 29. I recall it was advertised in the 70s in the back of gun magazines. Nice looking rig, and the middle of the cylinder was exposed. I t think it was made by Lawman leather, and later Jackass where the former went out of business and the latter was bought out or someone else has the name now. Anyway, a smaller shop did do a run of a copy of the rig, Personally I have a 5" Bbl. 625 and on my equipment/gear list is an Alessi Field Master shoulder rig - I think Harry would have thought it quite serviceable. THe 29 I had back in the 70s, firing the CCI/Speer 200 gr. JHP would cut cloverleafs with three others pretty darn close at 25 yards

FWIW, here you go: quote: There is some disagreement on whether a genuine .44 was actually used in these movies or not.
It is rumored that the actual gun used during filming, was a model 57 (41 Magnum), because of the lack of production M-29's at the time the movie was being made....
It has also been said that a Model 25, in 45 A.C.P. was used, due to the more easy availability of 45 blanks.
About the only thing that seems to be agreed upon is that the gun used for filming was not a Model 29.

I don't have the Dirty Harry model, but I got a great deal on a nickel Model 29 with an 8 3/8" barrel. It is punishing to shoot with magnum loads, but with .44 special, it's got less kick than most .38 specials!!! Everybody should have a .44 mag, just because, but everybody should also stock up on .44 special ammo if they want to do much shooting! -Jeff

Ive never shot a 44 mag. Is it even comparable to a hot 357? Id love to shoot one, but noone I know owns one, and no gun ranges rent them around here either. Also, Is it at all similiar to the 41Mag???

Here’s my pair of 29-2’s one blue & one nickel. Bought them both on the same day back in 1976. A couple of months later, there was a knock at the door and a Treasury Agent flashed a badge and asked to come in. He inquired about the model 29’s and asked if he could see them. I guess back then, buying 2 (or more) at a time raised some kind of flag. They wanted to make sure that I still had them and was not ‘dealing illegally’ in guns. Bob

I've seen Milius in one of those History channel type shows where he holds up a M29 that he says was in a Dirty Harry movie & is now his own. It's not clear which movie. Several movies, probably several revolvers. Milius also states that in the script of that iconic scene that "Harry" fires 6 rounds and then clicks on empty. I'm one who says he heard 5 shots in the theater, then ...lower hammer, re-cock on empty for the click. Pulling the trigger after not knowing whether he had fired 5 or 6 would make Harry a sadistic murderer. Not knowing 5 or 6, but knowing that re-cocking would bring up an empty either way, makes for ... an impish sense of humor...

Glenn if you're still looking for a Model 29 then I know where you can get one, with the 6 1/2 barrel, and the original grips. I have been buying all my handguns from this one place.

Can't say about the .41 mag, but, the .44 mag can be two handsful if shooting huge (>240 gr.) loads a lot.A few cylinders full is ok,but, you can also shoot .44 specials all day long if you'd like.Just be sure to clean well after the .44 specials to get rid of all the crud. And,just pay attention.......
