Full lock removal instructions are in the Frequently Asked Questions series in the 1945 to the Present Revolvers area.

Also possible to grind off the small raised tit on the flag to disable the lock mechanism with no external sign of the disabling. Only problem with that is that S&W will no longer sell lock parts except for factory installation.

If you ever want to be able to sell the gun then full lock removal and reinstallation prior to the sale is IMO the preferred way to go. That way you are selling an unaltered gun, probably the safest path in our litigous age.

A nice option S&W should consider is if someone requests to purchase lock parts, they should sell them! This includes a non locking replacement flag and plug.

THEN I WOULD BUY THEIR NEW REVOLVERS!

Other than a few X frames I now have, that's it, no more for me!!

The Locks I won't use for carry or home protection.

1) The lock was mandated by a strong-arm deal from the Clinton DOJ - S&W "took the deal" to avoid a crippling mountain of frivolous suits from anti-gun zealots, private and public.

2) I have read details of the deal in the past, and I recall that should S&W decide to stop integrating locks, there could be criminal penalties from the DOJ as well as re-instatement of the law suits.

3) Subsequent legislation has outlawed the frivolous lawsuits, so they could not be re-instated, or if they were, they would be rapidly dismissed.

4) That leaves the block being the DOJ wrath, which could still be exercised.

Sound like the current state of things, or am I misunderstanding things?

The lock is just one of several things listed in "the deal". If "DOJ wrath" was the reason, then Smith would be honoring the other things also.

Probably happen before Ruger does the following:

1) Reverses their support for the ten round magazine ban.

2) Manufactures (and sells) 20 and 30 round mags (Mini 14 & 30) for the general public.

3) Reverses their belief that the public doesn't need "those assault weapons"...

There are much more serious issues to worry about. Like how on earth do some of those politicians keep getting re-elected?

I no longer own a single Ruger.

Wonder if the SCOTUS opinion that requiring trigger locks is unconstitutional will hurry the demise of such devices in handguns?

Poohgyrr;

Ruger is now listing 15 and 17 shot 9mm magazines for some of their pistols.

Too little, too late. That is merely lip service and a slap in our face.

Ruger's true colors still show.

I agree 100%, i will not buy a new S&W until they are gone. I was on another site yesterday and ask the question WILL LOCKS GO AWAY, the first person to respond stated that he thought the lock was cool, he liked it. Some peoples kids.

Not wanting to sound redundant, but I won't buy a S&W with a lock. I'd love to find a pre-lock blued 442 however.

Take the lock off and in a few years everybody will be clamoring for it as a collectible. No question about it!

I've stopped buying new Smiths and I won't buy any until I have a non-lock option. I have 2 or 3 with the IL, but I don't and won't use them for personal protection. Just seeing that ugly little hole, frankly, pisses me off.

I just sold off an almost new IL 642 because of it and replaced it with a "new to me" 38-2 in nickel and I'm happy as a clam.

I fail to understand how people here defend the lock with it's obvious design flaws and known and documented potential for rendering the weapon inoperable. Amazing.

And the very idea that I should purchase a BRAND NEW product and immediately have to start poking around in it's innards and removing parts is ludicris to me.

I still like my classic S&W's but my loyalty to the company has entirely evaporated over this issue.

Yeah, I bought a revolver this month... a Ruger.

deckert - I agree, its ridiculous.

If I wanted to pay too much for a substandard gun, then take it apart and remove/tweak parts to get it to be reliable, I'd buy a Kimber Wink Regards 18DAI.

I am a true Smith fan,had 4 pre lock revolvers. The Model 640 Smith replaced has a lock so for now I keep the key on my keychain and totally ignore it.My only fear,as it is one of my carry guns,is the thing spontaneously locking at the time when I need it most.If this happens Smith and Wesson will be opening themselves up to more liability then just leaving the lock off......god Bless....Mike

A person shouldn't have to buy something new and then "fix it" so that it will be 100%, guaranteed reliable! I own over 50 S&W revolvers and none, I repeat, none have the lock. I won't own one with the lock. I think S&W might be opening themselves up to lawsuits if one of their guns with the lock, locks up when it shouldn't, and it results in a death of someone trying to defend themself. Hey, don't laugh, there are plenty of lawyers out there who would love to do this possibility.
