Have been the proud owner of a 4506 since 1989. Carried for years, and loved it. Recently acquuired a M&P 45 but have not yet been able to shoot it.

The 45 ACP is a great ground, and S&W makes many fine platforms for that round.

For concealed carry I prefer the slightly smaller than "commander" sized S&W's...the stainless steel M-4516, or stainless/alloy M-4513 and M-457.

With their 3.5" barrels they conceal well, are very reliable, and extremely accurate for short barreled guns.

I lucked up on a great trade into a M-457 this year and it's gonna stay in my "keeper" safe when not carried.

That newly released M&P45c looks intriguing. And Smith makes some nice 1911s, too.

I would suggest one of the "classic S&W-style" autopistols, a traditional single action/double action, like the full size Model 4506-1 or the compact 457.

The fact I currently have one of each for sale at terriffic prices in "Marketplace" is just purely coincidental!

You may like a 4566 which is the same as the 4506 but with a 4 1/4" barrel. I have an excellent one for sale in the classifieds.

I have the MP 45 FS. Great gun. I have owned
many 45's and MP is the best. I did get an
MP 45c, but not fired it yet. Monday I hope.
My MP 45c may be better. You can't miss with
MP 3 backstraps for you grip. IMO

If you are just wanting some thing to take out and shoot at the range a 4506 or 4566 are very good options. Police trade in guns can be had at very good prices. An older 645 is a good choice as well. They all take the same mags too.

If you want a Carry gun the 4516, 457 and SC45 are great. My mine carry gun is a 4516-1 and I love it. Some say the 4516 is too heavy for carry but with the right belt and holster it is fine.

Another option for a range gun is the 745. For carry, 4566 or 4567.

I started out with a 4506-1... and have gotten hooked on the 3rd gen pistols.

A 4516-1 followed me home last week... neither has cured the fever yet, and I may have to find a 4566. All of those models are great "everyday" guns.

For a "balls to the wall" S&W .45, there's the Performance Center 945, which is a very interesting hybrid. Basically a tricked out 4506 slide married to a tricked out 1911 frame fitted with all of the usual goodies. I lucked out last year on finding a good deal on a used 945, it draws attention where ever it goes.

If I was forced to keep just once of these guns, I would without hesitation go with my 4506-1, they are superb pistols that can be had at an attactive price.

I have used the S&W 945 for the 45 stage in bullseye pistol competition. A truly superb gun right out of the box. The only minus with the 945 is that one cannot purchase after market grip with a hand shelf as one can with 1911 style frames.

I also purchased a S&W 945 from old dealer stock at a very attractive price. I have used it for stell plate shoots.

Both the 645 and 945 have digested any handloads which I have fed them including 185 gr. LSWC ammo.

You might also consider the S&W 1911 Performance Center products. I have not used them, personally, however if they are as accurate and relaible as the 945 it would be my choice.

I really like the 1911's from S&W.
I have a Gunsite, a 1911pd and the 1911.
All are serving me well.

I also have a 745 that is a fantistic range gun.

Sure I carry a .45, a .50 is just a little too large.
